Renault's reborn Alpine team will work with Lotus on an EV sports car
Renault wants to be known as a technology-focused sports car powerhouse. To that end, the company is relaunching Alpine — a French manufacturer established in 1955 and acquired by Renault in 1973 — as an umbrella brand for all of its high-performance initiatives, including Renault Sport Cars and Renault Sport Racing (RSR). Today, though, Renault revealed that Alpine will also become a cutting-edge EV maker.

Renault's 'transformer' EV concept can stretch to take on extra batteries
Renault's latest concept EV is literally a transformer that works for both city driving and long trips. The Morphoz EV in "City" mode normally has a 40 kWh battery that's good for 90 percent of driving in cities or suburbs. However, for the 10 percent of the time you take it on long trips, it can stretch in size to "Travel" mode and accommodate an additional 50 kWh battery extender pack. Drivers can install it at special stations through a flap in the bottom of the Morphoz "in just a few seconds," leaving you with 700 km (434 miles) of highway range.
Formula 1's underdogs struggle with the technical challenges of the sport
As Renault approached the French Grand Prix, a lot was at stake. The race was on the team's home turf, at a make-or-break point in the season. Nobody was panicking. Yet. Despite having won twice in 2018 with Red Bull, new driver Daniel Ricciardo knew what he'd signed up for with Renault. The team was ready: It came in with both engine and chassis changes. But the Paul Ricard circuit at Castellet in France was not the best test for Renault, given the high speeds and the team's continuing aerodynamic issues. The changes to the chassis and motor didn't help, a fact confirmed in qualifying on Saturday. Ricciardo was on the fourth row in eighth place and Nico Hulkenberg in 13th -- not the results Renault was looking for.
Waymo is developing driverless services with Renault and Nissan
Waymo might make its way to the top of the automotive world with the help of industry giants that chose to team up with the company. The Alphabet subsidiary has just inked a deal with Renault and Nissan to explore the development of driverless mobility services. None of the companies involved revealed details about the project other than the products they do come up with will transport people and deliver goods in France and Japan. According to Reuters, though, the partnership will also explore the development of self-driving cars for the regions. Who knows -- it might even give Waymo the chance to get in on the Tokyo 2020 Olympics robotaxi action.
Fiat Chrysler may strike Renault deal to survive changing car industry
Fiat Chrysler hasn't been on the cutting edge of automotive change as of late. Unless you count concepts like the Centoventi, the company hasn't done much with EVs -- and its support for autonomy mostly involves supplying minivans to Waymo. The automaker might make a huge deal that could prepare it for the future, though. Financial Times sources have claimed that Fiat Chrysler is in advanced talks to create "extensive ties" with Renault to help it cope with a changing industry. It might even join the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance in the future, although the tipsters cautioned that nothing was set at this stage.
Waymo may team up with Renault-Nissan on self-driving taxis
Waymo might not be done courting the automotive world after working with the likes of Fiat Chrysler and Jaguar Land Rover. Nikkei claims the Alphabet-owned company is in the "final phase" of talks to partner with the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance on self-driving car services. While there aren't too many specifics, one project would have Waymo and Nissan work together on autonomous taxis, including a system for booking rides. You'd hear about the union in the spring, Nikkei said.
Nissan boss who championed the Leaf EV arrested on tax charges
Carlos Ghosn, the CEO who guided Nissan through difficult times and masterminded the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance, has reportedly been arrested in Japan and could soon be fired by Nissan. In an extraordinary news release, Nissan said that an internal investigation found that Ghosn and Director Greg Kelly were under-reporting their compensation in the Tokyo Stock Exchange. The automaker also discovered "significant acts of misconduct ... such as personal use of company assets" by both executives.
Here's what you missed at the 2018 Paris Auto Show
France badly wants electric cars, but as the 2018 Paris Auto Show demonstrated, that's still a long way from happening. Sure, we saw plenty of exciting EV concepts, like Peugeot's throwback E-Legend, the autonomous Renault EZ-ULTIMO land yacht and Mercedes back-to-the-50s EQ Silver Arrow. However, some of Europe's large automakers, like VW, didn't even show up. And apart from Kia's E-Niro, there were no new and affordable non-gasoline cars that you'll be able to buy soon in Europe.
Renault's EZ-ULTIMO is a self-driving luxury lounge
With its last two concept cars, the EZ-GO and EZ-PRO, Renault focused on how autonomous cars could transport people and packages en masse, with a bit of style. With its latest car, the EZ-ULTIMO, the automaker is focusing mostly on the "style" part. Unveiled appropriately at the Paris Auto Show, it's a robotic EV concept that offers a "premium travel experience" rather than basic transportation, coddling occupants in wood, marble and leather.
Infiniti 'dual-hybrid' concept car gathers heat to boost performance
Most hybrid cars are meant to save fuel and the planet. You can't say that about Infiniti's just-unveiled Project Black S concept, however -- here, it's all about speed. It's built on the design of the Q60 Red Sport 400, but contains a Formula 1-derived "dual hybrid" system that can recuperate electricity when the car is braking and accelerating. There's one motor generator unit that captures energy from the brakes. The real stars, though, are two motor generator units on the V6 engine that collect heat from the twin turbos, translating it into either reduced turbo lag (by spinning the turbines faster than they would on their own) or as much as 120kW of power for the drivetrain.
Renault is creating France's first 'smart island'
Back in February, Renault helped electrify the Portuguese islands of Madeira and Porto Santo -- a move not dissimilar to Tesla's efforts in Hawaii. Now it's at work again bringing power to the French island of Belle-Île-en-Mer, in a bid to create the first "smart island" in its home country.
