BMW i4 M50 review: An engineering triumph
The 2022 BMW i4 M50 is more than just a sedan with an EV powertrain shoved inside. It’s a fine-tuning of suspension, chassis and power that should give those looking at future BMW EVs a reason to be excited.

A dispatch from inside Sony's prototype electric car
It's a miracle Sony was able to keep its electric car concept under wraps ahead of CES. In an age of leaks (and given that over ten different companies collaborated with Sony), it's an impressive feat. And the Vision-S prototype, up close, is more put-together than you might expect. I got to sit inside Sony's sales pitch for the automotive industry. The message seemed to be: "We can do cool stuff. Work with us."
Jaguar confirms that the I-Pace team is building an electric XJ
While announcing plans to build a "range" of electrified vehicles at its Castle Bromwich, UK plant, Jaguar confirmed that the first new EV to roll off the line there will be an all-electric version of its flaship sedan, the XJ. Development of the new car is being handled by the same team that built Jaguar's all-electric I-Pace SUV that we called "exceptional."
The Mercedes A220 raises the bar for 'inexpensive' luxury cars
Luxury vehicles are expensive. German luxury vehicles are very expensive. Sure, you get bottom-of-the-barrel trim on the cheapest fancy car, but typically that means you end up longing for the models that are the next level up. The Mercedes A-Class changes that.
Audi teases its E-Tron GT sedan
Audi has teased the E-Tron GT sedan, and confirmed that it will reveal the entire car tomorrow, November 28th, at the LA Auto Show, according to Bild. The E-Tron GT will be Audi's flagship EV and, as reported earlier this year, based on Porsche's Taycan (formerly Mission E) platform.
Volvo's subscription service is so popular it's running out of XC40s
Volvo made it clear back in June that its Care by Volvo subscription service was going to be a big hit. Now, it's got the stats to back it up: in just four months the company has sold as many subscriptions as it originally anticipated selling in the scheme's first year. And if you want in on the $650 a month deal for the XC40, you'll probably be waiting until next year for your vehicle to be delivered. It'll be a challenge getting ahold of it via traditional means, too, as Volvo has pinched the supply of XC40s going to dealerships.
The Lexus ES 300h is a chill luxury sedan
There's something to be said about comfy. Your favorite pillow or blanket might not be the best on the market, but they make you feel better. Even if it has a pizza stain that's shaped like Ohio. The Lexus ES 300h (starting at $41,410) is like a comfort blanket. It's cozy, quiet and it looks nice. It grows on you. As long as you don't get frustrated dealing the infotainment system trackpad.
Elon Musk: Tesla Model 3 dual-motor ordering opens next week
In a sign that Tesla's Model 3 production continues to improve, CEO Elon Musk tweeted that the company will enable ordering of dual-motor versions of the sedan at the end of next week. Customers waiting for a Model 3 in performance or all-wheel-drive trim can find out how much the options will cost and put orders in with production scheduled to start in July, consistent with Musk's statement last month. We don't know anything about the specs on either model, but AWD was a $5,000 option on the Model S until it became standard (as it is on the Model X) late last year. Also, in his response to IGN's Ryan McCaffrey, Musk said air suspension could arrive as an option in 2019.
Mercedes prepares electric equivalent to its S-Class luxury sedan
Mercedes-Benz is joining the ranks of car manufacturers working on hyper-luxurious EVs. In a chat with Autocar, the company's large car division leader Michael Kelz promised an electric car "at the level" of the high-end S-Class sedan. The exec unsurprisingly isn't providing many details, but confirmed its EQ S name (the company had trademarked the badging earlier) and noted that it wouldn't share the S-Class' underpinnings -- the conventional car just can't accommodate a pure electric design. We'd expect the EQ design language to find its way into this model as well.
Mercedes to show its Tesla-fighting electric sedan in September
It's no secret that Mercedes-Benz eventually wants to compete with Tesla, not just partner with it, and you won't have to wait much longer to see how that rivalry shakes out. The company's David McCarthy tells Motoring.com.au that you should see a concept version of Merc's Tesla-beating electric sedan in September, or shortly before the Paris Motor Show. Its exact specs are a mystery (even McCarthy hasn't seen it; you're looking at the IAA Concept), but it should sit in the Model S' price bracket and offer similar driving range when it launches, most likely in 2018. There were previously teases that it would be "dangerously fast," in case there was any doubt that it would be a performance-minded ride.
Tesla's Model 3 lineup will include a crossover
When Tesla talks about plans to enter the world of mainstream electric cars with the Model 3, it's not just referring to launching one vehicle -- it's actually talking about a whole lineup. The automaker's JB Straubel says that the Model 3 will include not just the expected sedans, but crossovers as well. There aren't more details at this point, but it's apparent that the new EV series is about transforming Tesla into a more accessible brand, not just giving you a lower-cost alternative to a Model S. Straubel is certainly optimistic about what the 3 range can do. He expects to see a million Teslas on the road by 2020, which would make Elon Musk's outfit considerably more than a niche badge. Tesla shows just how far your Model S will go on a charge
So you're fortunate enough to be shopping for a Tesla Model S, but you're anxious about just how far the electric sedan's variants will go on a full battery. How do you know you won't be stranded on the roadside because you bought the wrong edition? The automaker clearly wants to put that range anxiety to rest. It just posted a detailed look at the driving range you're likely to get from the Model S based on a slew of factors, including the equipment you use and how you drive. There's a range estimator, too, if you want to see how each of those factors comes into play.
