Nintendo has finally rolled out the ability to play with friends online in Super Mario Maker 2. The game launched with online co-op and competitive modes, but you could only play with random people via matchmaking. If you wanted to play with friends, it would have to be via local play. According to Nintendo World Report, the company chose not to include online play with friends as one of the game's original features to prevent people from teaming up to dominate the global leaderboards.

Super Mario Maker 2 is as much about building your own Mario courses as it is playing through the millions of stages other players have already uploaded. But many players have already hit the limit of how many courses they can upload at once, forcing them to pull an older creation off Nintendo's servers if they want to share a new one. They'll now have a bit more flexibility, as Nintendo has increased the course upload limit from 32 to 64.

Super Mario Maker 2 players are having a busy summer. Nintendo announced today that players have uploaded 2 million courses on the level creator since its worldwide release on June 28th. The highly-anticipated Nintendo Switch sequel to Super Mario Maker also lets users create courses that anyone can play, but with a world of assets and features not seen in the original. Players can choose between 100 Nintendo-designed levels or any of the levels created by other Mario fans.

'Super Mario Maker 2' is another love letter to Nintendo’s 2D platformers

It's impossible to play Super Mario Maker 2 without having a huge smile on your face. It's a total deconstruction of what makes Nintendo's 2D platforming franchise so special. You're just a plumber, standing on a stage, hoping to make it to the goal intact. The real hook, of course, is that you can take everything you've learned from Mario games over the years and craft your own levels, with the freedom to make them as simple or thumb-numbingly complex as you'd like. And if you're just in the mood to play, you've got a practically endless supply of levels from Nintendo and the online community to feed on. There's no doubt Super Mario Maker 2 banks heavily on nostalgia, but it's also a way for both old and new players to truly grasp the power of 2D platformers.

For all the improvements to online features in Super Mario Maker 2, multiplayer is oddly limited -- you can play with random people on the internet, but not your friends. That won't be true forever, thankfully. Producer Takashi Tezuka has confirmed that online multiplayer with friends will come to the level-building game through an update. More details are coming in the future, Nintendo said.

Super Mario Maker single-handedly justified the Wii U's existence. Not only did it finally deliver on my childhood dream of designing my own Mario levels, it proved that the console's gigantic tablet could be genuinely useful. It's just a shame Mario Maker came too late in the Wii U's short lifetime to save it, which also drastically limited the amount of potential players. And while the portable 3DS version of the game was impressive, it was weighed down by the curious omission of online level sharing.

Four years after the first Super Mario Maker proved how hard it is to make videogames, its sequel is coming to the Switch. Nintendo dropped a preview trailer for Super Mario Maker 2 a couple of months ago and said it would arrive in June, but now it's specified the game will be released on June 28th.

It took its sweet time, but Super Mario Maker is coming to Nintendo Switch! Far from a port, this is a bonafide sequel, Super Mario Maker 2. Details are scant, but from the brief trailer Nintendo showed during its Nintendo Direct presentation, we noticed some assets from that other superb Wii U game, Super Mario 3D World. The best news? You'll only have to wait a few months to play it: Super Mario Maker 2 will land in June 2019. Expect to hear a lot more about it in the coming months.
