Today would have been City of Heroes' 10th anniversary, believe it or not. And while fond memories and colorful screenshots are all that remain of the former superhero MMO, the spiritual successor City of Titans is being built to fill in the void that was left behind. Missing Worlds Media, the team behind City of Titans, released a new version of the teaser trailer for the Kickstarter project on this solemn occasion. It mostly consists of concept art and unpainted models being plunked down to make a city, but if you're looking to the future for your superhero fix, it might be an early glimpse at your future home. Give it a watch after the break. [Update: Not to be outdone, Heroes and Villains also released new work-in-progress screenshots of its own spiritual successor to CoH in honor of the original's anniversary.]

Developer Housemarque tweeted the above picture yesterday, likely hinting that a DLC co-op mode is in the works for its PlayStation 4 game, Resogun. Available at the PlayStation 4's launch last year, Resogun is a horizontally scrolling shoot-'em-up in the vein of the arcade classic Defender, challenging players to rescue human survivors as they blast waves of enemy ships. The game premiered as part of the PlayStation Plus Instant Game Collection, emerging as an early favorite for Sony's new platform. Currently, simultaneous co-op play in Resogun is limited to online multiplayer sessions. Housemarque notes that the content featured in the teased image is the "first of many things to come" with regard to future Resogun DLC. [Image: Housemarque]

Press Play, the Danish studio behind Max: The Curse of Brotherhood, announced its next game today, codenamed Project Totem. Like Max, Project Totem is a colorful platformer, and is currently in development for Xbox One and Xbox 360. Press Play is preparing to launch the game this fall. The "playful yet precise" game has players guiding two totem pole pieces with one game pad. The gameplay concept comes from two brothers, Asger Strandby (Game Director) and Bo Strandby (Lead Designer), who opted to add local cooperative multiplayer to Project Totem in addition to its single player campaign. • Atlus elects to publish non-Kickstarted Citizens of Earth

Atlus announced plans to publish Citizens of Earth, a quirky RPG that follows the Vice President of the World on his quest to investigate the bizarre happenings in the town. Developed by Eden Industries, Citizens of Earth fell short of its $100,000 CAD ($91,600 USD) goal on Kickstarter in October 2013, raising just $36,875 CAD ($33,778 USD). The modern RPG takes after popular SNES classic Earthbound, with its humorous approach to world-saving adventures and includes recruiting mechanics in line with the Pokemon and Suikoden series. The Vice President brings "regular characters into the spotlight as heroes" for them to do his dirty work in battle, continuing their day jobs when not engaged in combat. The game includes 40 citizens, though ambitious fans are encouraged to enter a contest by Friday, April 18 on Atlus' site to create the 41st one for the game. Citizens of Earth is in development for PS4, Vita, 3DS, Wii U and PC and is expected to arrive on each platform's digital channels in North America and Europe in September 2014. [Image: Atlus]

  • Introducing Das Tal, a PvP sandbox where players make the rules

If your fun's been stunted by a sad lack of free-for-all PvP sandboxes, then might we suggest you're not looking very hard? Let us give you a start in this direction, at least, as Fairytale Distillery announced its upcoming project, Das Tal. Das Tal is a "fast-paced" sandbox that includes open PvP, full looting of players' corpses, a classless character system, and a constant struggle over resources and player settlements. Probably the most interesting aspect of this MMO is that each server will eventually reach a "climactic end event" and then restart, allowing players to vote on the rules and features for the next iteration. Das Tal is on Steam Greenlight, is currently in the pre-production stage, and will most likely be doing a fundraising campaign at some point. We've got a teaser trailer for you with the creepiest voice-over ever after the break. [Thanks to Skurvel for the tip!]

  • Angry Birds goes medieval in mysterious 'epic' tease

The above video comes courtesy of Angry Birds creator Rovio, who unveiled the brief footage alongside the following description: "Perhaps the most Epic soft launch ever - whatever that means!?" It's unclear what exactly Rovio is teasing here, though fan site Angry Birds Nest offers a convincing argument in favor of a fantasy-themed Angry Birds entry based on clues found in a separate Rovio video from late last year. Among a handful of screenshots pulled from the earlier clip are depictions of birds new to the series, potential vehicles for racer Angry Birds Go, and, most notably given today's teaser, a silhouette that depicts familiar Angry Birds characters in stereotypical fantasy gear. There's a wizard with a pointy hat and robe, a fighter with sword and horned helmet and an archer who appears to prefer deformed marshmallows to deadly arrowheads. While all of this is circumstantial speculation, until Rovio decides to explain this new teaser we don't have much else to go on. Our attempts to pry more information from the publisher were unsuccessful, and in place of a useful explanation we have been instructed to "wait and see." [Image: Rovio]

    03.06.2014

As was foretold, Shaq is returning to the gaming world with a rebirth of one of the more infamous games in history, Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn. The flexible funding project is now live on Indiegogo, and is seeking $450,000 to make the beat-em-up game a reality. The funding page acknowledges the original game's less than stellar history and notes that Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn will be "what the original game should have been." A Legend Reborn still stars the former basketball player, but instead opts for a beat-em-up style game that features "hundreds of moves and battle techniques" with "dozens of cool melee weapons." The game will include a cooperative multiplayer mode in addition to player-versus-player options. The developers behind the PC game at Big Deez Productions are former triple-A developers that worked on series like Halo, Street Fighter, Final Fantasy, Alan Wake, Battlefield, Killzone and more. The Indiegogo campaign is set to end on April 20. The game will come to additional platforms if it reaches varying stretch goal levels: $650,000 for iOS and Android, $775,000 for Xbox 360 and PS3, $960,000 for Vita and 3DS, $1.08 million for Wii U and $1.62 million for Xbox One and PS4. • Photo suggests Oppo's Find 7 smartphone might have a 50-megapixel camera

Oppo may have just stolen Nokia's camera resolution crown. The Chinese company has posted a whopping 50-megapixel (8,160 x 6,120) photo that was reportedly taken with the upcoming Find 7 smartphone. On a surface level, the image checks out -- there's a lot of detail here, including street signs that suggest Oppo took the picture in Barcelona (despite the likely fake Florida license plate). However, we wouldn't be too quick to praise the Find 7's photographic abilities. Oppo is known to occasionally post bogus teasers that don't translate into shipping products, so it wouldn't be surprising if the company's new flagship relies on more modest camera technology.

We've seen reports that HTC would be keeping the name from 2013's popular handset for its 2014 flagship, and today the outfit posted a BoomSound video teaser that seems to confirm the moniker. Taking a page out of Apple's playbook, the "all new HTC One" is referenced several times in the latter half of the promo. Of course, what we're led to believe in the upcoming device remains cloaked in blurred pixels and spoken details are bleeped out. It's worth noting that the company's PR has LOL'd at the notion of name consistency on Twitter, but we'll know for sure next month when the new model is expected to be announced.

EA Sports has issued a tweet gauging interest in an NBA Jam sequel, hinting at a new entry in the long-running arcade-style basketball series. NBA Jam returned to consoles in 2010 after a lengthy hiatus, arriving first for the Nintendo Wii and later making its way to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. An enhanced downloadable version, NBA Jam: On Fire Edition, followed in 2011, offering an array of gameplay improvements and new features. Electronic Arts has not announced any plans to produce an NBA Jam sequel, and in a rare display of reticence, @NBAJamAnnouncer remains silent on the issue. [Image: EA]

Behold, ex-Star Wars Galaxies players: This is the first glimpse of the home that SOE is building for you. SOE President John Smedley sent out a pair of pictures on Twitter on January 29th showing screenshots from the unannounced MMO that the studio is creating. The pictures are both of the back of a church or chapel with a fenced-in graveyard next to it. In the second picture, snow is falling. The pictures seem to suggest that the game will take place in a contemporary setting. One of SOE's CMs indicated that these tweets were of the new sandbox MMO described as "dedicated" to SWG players.

Gnah is a "game about exploring and escaping giant heads." That's how Montreal-based indie developer Ko-Op Mode describes its latest project in addition to the phrase "the only way out is through" in the game's teaser trailer. Gnah is a collaboration between the Ko-Op Mode collective and designer Samuel Boucher, whose Tumblr blog is filled with attractive designs related to the game. Boucher took to an indie gaming forum to discuss the project in December, calling Gnah a "puzzle game about a little guy trapped in some weird heads called Gnahs." Gnah has players controlling the character in the heads as well as manipulating the heads themselves to help the character escape. The game is in development for PC, Mac, Linux and Ouya.

  • Sony teases 'slimmest' PlayStation device coming to the UK on January 30th

    01.24.2014

We've had a lucky run with product teasers recently. Instead of being totally vague, they've deliberately given us some inkling of what to expect, and we're hoping that the Sony flyer above -- summoning us to a PlayStation event in London -- does so too. We're told the briefing will introduce UK journalists to the "slimmest" PlayStation device, but we're not told that we're definitely going to witness the launch of a whole new product, which -- to our minds, at least -- suggests we might be looking at the UK launch of the PlayStation Vita TV. At just 13.6mm thick, the Vita TV is the thinnest PS device that we know of and it's currently only available in Japan, so a launch in the UK (or anywhere outside of Asia) could potentially be a big deal. We're gonna go ahead and rule out a super slim PlayStation 4 already, but the other plausible alternative is that the flyer is technically wrong, and that this is the UK launch of the slimmer version of the PlayStation Vita handheld -- in other words, the 2013 Japanese model, which has an LCD screen instead of OLED, better battery life and which is just 15mm thick (20 percent skinnier than the current UK model). In any case, we'll be there at the event on January 30th, with a flask of coffee and a pair of calipers.

Conception 2: Children of the Seven Stars will launch April 15 in North America. Atlus recently gave players a glimpse at the seven eligible heroines in the 3DS and Vita game, and offered a teaser trailer for baby-making RPG today. Conception 2 has players assuming the role of a young Disciple with powers gifted to him by a Star God, who must birth monster-fighting kiddos to save the world by befriending the aforementioned heroines. The trailer includes brief looks at how Conception 2's combat system looks in action, using footage from the 3DS version. First-run editions of the game will include a 10-track album by composer Masato Kouda of Devil May Cry and Monster Hunter fame, which features the song heard in the trailer.

  • Fujifilm teases a new X-mount camera with full manual dials and possible weather sealing

    01.20.2014

Fujilfilm's current range of X-mount cameras have hardly struggled to attract a following, but there's always room for a fresh addition, especially if it brings quicker manual controls. Judging from the official teaser image above, we should expect just such a camera to arrive on January 28th, with a nice big ISO dial to complement the shutter and exposure compensation dials already found on the X-Pro1. If we're happy to indulge in a bit of gossip, courtesy of MirrorlessRumors, then it's also possible that the coming model will add something else the X-Pro1 was missing: a weather-sealed body. If that turns out to be true, then the Nikon Df could have some competition on its hands -- not over raw specs perhaps (because it somehow feels unlikely that Fujifilm has suddenly come up with a full-frame X-TRANS sensor that could match the Df's), but at least over size, weight and price.

    01.07.2014

Snail Games has just unveiled a brand-new trailer for Black Gold Online, teasing a fight between an enormous goliath and equally large behemoth and showing off behind-the-scenes clips of how the goliath was designed. According to the video description, the goliath is a creation of the engineers of Steam, built specifically to counter the Erlandir-summoned behemoth. And by "counter" we mean "punch." Check out the teaser after the break. Snail describes Black Gold's universe as a "world where innovative Victorian steampunk clashes with traditional high fantasy." The game is set for launch sometime in 2014 with a closed alpha aimed at February.

The D3300 isn't the only DSLR that Nikon will show at CES. The camera maker has revealed that it will preview its next-generation flagship camera, the D4S, at its booth on the show floor. While Nikon isn't saying much about the new pro cam's advantages over the D4, it's already talking up a new imaging engine that should deliver faster autofocusing -- no mean feat when the D4 is already quite nimble. It's still too early for any launch details, but you can be sure that we'll take a look at the D4S as soon as possible.

    12.23.2013

Just before a big tech show, ASUS likes to wheel out a baffling teaser to get us all in the mood. Normally, the clips involve panning over some brushed metal, promising that the new gear will transform your life. But every now and again, ASUS decides it's time to travel to a world heritage site for a spot of vandalism. The latest victim is the Statue of Liberty, which throws a peace "V" to the crowd before pulling apart the tabula ansata in the hope of getting a Transformer Book Trio of its very own. What's new this time round is that this system somehow supports dual OS in both laptop mode and tablet mode, as indicated by the blue (Windows) and green (Android) flash; whereas the current Trio only does dual boot in laptop mode. On the other hand, the keyboard base appears to remain fully functional as a Windows machine (and may still require a separate monitor). Come CES, we shall take a closer look at this second-gen Trio.

Warhorse Studios delivered a teaser trailer and name for its upcoming RPG today, now known as Kingdom Come: Deliverance. The indie Czech developer, founded in 2011 by Mafia and Mafia 2 designer Daniel Vávra, noted that the game is expected to arrive in 2015 for PC and unspecified next-gen consoles. Kingdom Come: Deliverance will take place in the "Holy Roman Empire during the late Middle Ages," in which players can engage in first-person hand-to-hand combat, sieges and large-scale battles. Unlike other games that draw inspiration from the era, Warhorse Studios promised "no magic, high fantasy or mythical overtones" in its description of the game, but will instead focus on "historically authentic characters, themes and warfare." Among those themes is the struggle for the right to sit on the throne and hold power over the kingdom, which will be central to the game's plot. The developer also recently issued a blog that described its lengthy trials in finding a suitable publisher for the open-world RPG and where it stands currently in its endeavors.
