‘Rabbids Coding’ teaches young gamers basic programming concepts

We've seen plenty of games that teach kids the basics of coding, but it's rare to see the big game publishers embrace the "edutainment" sector. The latest coding game, though, comes from Ubisoft, the creators of the Assassin's Creed and Rainbow Six franchises. Rabbids Coding -- which features those demented, titular creatures that are somehow both annoying and cute -- tasks players with creating routines that will repair the Rabbids' malfunctioning spaceship.

  • Assassin's Creed: Unity patch is 40 GB on Xbox One for some

The fourth patch for Assassin's Creed: Unity arrived yesterday as a sizable 6.7 GB download. At least, that's the case for non-Xbox One players; some players using the Microsoft console are facing 40 GB downloads for the patch, effectively the size of the full game on the system's hard drive. Ubisoft explained the situation in an update on its support site, noting the "issue with the patch downloading process is replacing the entire game instead of just the parts affected by the patch." The publisher is "working with Microsoft on a solution to reduce the total download to the intended size so that you can get back into the game faster," though it does not have an estimated timeline for the patch's fix just yet. Ubisoft did provide an alternative workaround for disc-based Assassin's Creed: Unity owners: By uninstalling and then re-installing the game, the patch will revert to the correct 6.7 GB download size. The publisher briefly delayed the launch of the patch earlier this week to "refurbish" the game's Paris map. The update is expected to fix ""most of the remaining issues [Ubisoft's] players have been reporting." [Image: Ubisoft]

Ubisoft delayed the fourth Assassin's Creed: Unity patch today, citing additional issues that need to be corrected in the game before the update can be made available. The publisher anticipated that it could offer the patch today across all platforms. Unity's update was expected to fix "most of the remaining issues our players have been reporting," according to Ubisoft last week. "We are committed to delivering major performance improvements, which requires that we refurbish the Paris map and that will take a few more days to hit the high level of quality our players deserve," the publisher said in a brief community update. The update's delay strikes at an unfortunate time, as Assassin's Creed: Unity is half-off ($30) on Amazon today, and Ubisoft recently added a note to the game's description on the retailer's site that promises "performance has been improved on all platforms." • Assassin's Creed: Unity CEO apologizes for bugs, offers free DLC

Everyone who owns Assassin's Creed: Unity will receive the Dead Kings DLC for free once that launches, Ubisoft Montreal and Toronto CEO Yannis Mallat says in a blog post. The freebie is an apology for the technical issues that have plagued Unity since launch. "Unfortunately, at launch, the overall quality of the game was diminished by bugs and unexpected technical issues," Mallat says. "I want to sincerely apologize on behalf of Ubisoft and the entire Assassin's Creed team. These problems took away from your enjoyment of the game, and kept many of you from experiencing the game at its fullest potential." In our review of Unity, we noted that the game was "in dire need of a technical re-tweaking." Today, Ubisoft launched the game's third patch, bringing in more than 300 fixes. Players who purchased the Season Pass for Unity would have already received the Dead Kings DLC, and they are now entitled to one free Ubisoft game from the following lineup: The Crew, Far Cry 4, Watch Dogs, Assassin's Creed Black Flag, Rayman Legends and Just Dance 2015. Ubisoft is discontinuing sale of the Season Pass, the FAQ reads. [Image: Ubisoft/King_Anesti]

November's revolving door of patchwork continues unabated, with Assassin's Creed Unity's third band-aid promising "over three hundred fixes." The not-so-stealthy-sounding patch is due to hit PS4 and Xbox One today, while PC players have to wait until later this week. You can see the full or abridged patch notes on Ubisoft's site, including the wonderfully succinct note of "fixed various haystack issues." While some of the game's technical woes have been as hilarious as they were disturbing, other performance concerns have included framerate drops and frequent crashes. According to Ubisoft, this week's patch addresses both of those issues, but the publisher added there's still more work to be done.

After Ubisoft issued a second patch for Assassin's Creed: Unity late last week, the publisher gave a glimpse of the next update for the game, which is expected to fix more of its technical issues. The third update will be "larger in scope" compared to the previous two, patching bugs "like Arno getting stuck on certain areas of the map," and issues with getting in and out of cover. AI and crowd behavior will be tuned in the coming update as well as co-op multiplayer matchmaking and connectivity problems. Ubisoft also expects to fix situations where the game crashes for players, missing menu items and HUD pop-up errors as well as some of the game's performance issues, such as framerate drops. While Ubisoft said the patch will "dramatically improve" the experience for Unity players, it noted that "this next patch won't solve every problem." [Image: Ubisoft/King_Anesti]

As Assassin's Creed: Unity leapt down to PC, Xbox One and PS4 today, it was met with a mixed critical response. Our review of the game got hung up on plot issues and buildings, the latter in a very literal sense, with a middling score that plunged through the floor much like our hero Arno did during our time with the game. "Assassin's Creed Unity is the best and worst of Assassin's Creed," Weekend Editor Sam Prell discussed in his take on the game. "It's hard not to appreciate everything that it gets right, and you'll have a good time if you can wrangle some friends for co-op, but it's impossible to ignore where Unity falls tragically short." For a sampling of the varied opinions from other reviewers, head past the break.

PC players gearing up for the launch of Far Cry 4 in a few weeks will need an Intel Core i5-750 (2.6 GHz) or AMD Phenom II X4 955 (3.2 GHz) processor and 4 GB of memory. The game also required 30 GB of hard drive space and a video card at least as powerful as the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 or AMD Radeon HD5850 (1 GB of VRAM). For optimal performance, Ubisoft recommends either the Intel Core i5-2400S (2.5 GHz) processor or the AMD FX-8350 (4.0 GHz) or better, as well as 8 GB of memory. The game will perform better with at least a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 or AMD Radeon R9 290X or better video card (with 2 GB of VRAM). Far Cry 4 will also launch on Xbox One, PS4, Xbox 360 and PS3 in addition to PC on November 18. [Image: Ubisoft]

The Wii U version of Watch Dogs won't receive the game's Bad Blood downloadable content, Ubisoft confirmed via Twitter. It's unclear if the console will be without the add-on entirely or only at launch or whether Ubisoft's tweet refers to all future downloadable content, as the publisher said on the social media channel, "No, the Wii U version will not have the DLC." We reached out to Ubisoft for clarification on the matter and will update as we learn more. Watch Dogs was given a Wii U release date earlier this month; it will launch on November 18 in North America and November 21 in Europe. The game arrived on PS4, Xbox One, PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 in May. The Bad Blood DLC launched yesterday for those systems, though Ubisoft is still working to get the add-on in the hands of Xbox 360 owners "in the upcoming days." [Image: Ubisoft]

Update: Ubisoft confirmed a November 18 release date for Watch Dogs on Wii U. That's for North America, with Europe locked in for November 21. Ubisoft's press release notes users can bring up a "detailed and interactive" map of Chicago on the GamePad, and that off-TV play is also supported. Original Story: Ubisoft Mexico may have let the Watch Dogs out a bit early, with a now-removed Facebook post pinning the game's Wii U release date for November 18. That's a Tuesday, the day of the week games are typically released in North America, and company CEO Yves Guillemot has already slated the Wii U version for November. According to IGN's translation, the Facebook post noted that players can use the Wii U's GamePad as an interactive map of the game's Chicago setting, or simply as a controller.

Ubisoft Quebec is the lead studio on "a future Assassin's Creed," Ubisoft announced in a blog post. Ubisoft Montreal traditionally heads up development of Assassin's Creed games, in partnership with other Ubisoft studios, including Quebec. Ubisoft Quebec Managing Director Nicolas Rioux breaks down his studio's history with Assassin's Creed: "We were involved in Brotherhood. We were involved in Revelations. We were involved in Assassin's Creed 3. With AC 3 we were working on the biggest DLC for the franchise – The Tyranny of King Washington. After that we were also involved with Freedom Cry. We have the confidence of the brand team and also from Ubisoft to take leadership of an upcoming Assassin's Creed title. The team is ready for the next big step."
