SoundCloud's financial woes have just been granted a bit of relief. An investment proposal was circulated among SoundCloud investors earlier this week which outlined a deal that would bring in around $170 million from global merchant bank The Raine Group and investment company Temasek Capital Management. The plan also included a reorganization of the company that would put current CEO Alex Ljung on SoundCloud's board and bring in former Vimeo CEO Kerry Trainor as the new chief executive. In order for it to go through, shareholders were asked to decide on the deal by the end of today and in a statement provided to Engadget, SoundCloud has confirmed that the deal has gone through.

On Monday however, The Hollywood Reporter learned that the company has effectively killed the plan and is already in the process of liquidating the development team.

Many tech advocates and companies aren't happy that the FCC is planning to gut net neutrality, and they're determined to make their voices heard. The non-profit group has declared July 12th a "day of action" where companies and organizations will show support for a fair and competitive internet. It's not certain just what those protests will entail, but there are plenty of recognizable names involved. Amazon, Etsy, Kickstarter, Mozilla, Reddit and Vimeo are among the companies throwing their weight around, while groups like the American Civil Liberties Union, the Electronic Frontier Foundation and Greenpeace are also showing solidarity.

Ever gone to watch a video online and thought to yourself, "Man, this thumbnail could be a bit more animated?" If so, you're probably going to freak out a bit and think Giphy and Vimeo have been reading your mind. That's because starting today, Vimeo thumbnails will be brief, looping clips rather than static images. Or, as the press release puts it, "Now, you can watch what you're going to watch before you watch it." And given Vimeo's focus on the creator, these GIFs are directly tied to the origin video and feature attribution for the author.

Virtual reality hardware wouldn't be anywhere without content to play on it -- that's why so many big video companies are putting resources towards immersive, 360-degree video playback. Facebook and YouTube have both supported 360 videos for a while now, even letting users livestream (provided they have the right gear, of course.) It may be a little late to the party, but Vimeo is also getting into the game. While there's no livestreaming to be found yet, the platform now fully supports 360-degree video uploads and playback in a variety of ways.

Vimeo plans to start a new Netflix-type streaming service and develop its own content, but its won't spend Netflix dollars. Rather, the site (owned by Barry Diller's IAC) will help its creator community develop original content and supplement it with licensed programming. "Vimeo has the once-in-a-generation opportunity to, following in Netflix's footsteps, deliver compelling subscription viewing experiences for consumers in the market for pay TV," CEO Joey Levin said in a shareholder letter

With that in mind, Vimeo has released an updated version of its iOS and Android apps, giving users easy access to videos they've subscribed to, bought or rented. The new "Purchases" library also lets you download content to view offline, for those times when you're not connected to WiFi.

When you head to an independent theater in the near future, the pre-movie entertainment that plays might be slightly different. First and foremost, Vimeo is known as a portfolio site for professional and aspiring filmmakers. YouTube, meanwhile, is seen as the place to monetize online videos, given its huge viewership and support of pre-roll advertising. Vimeo has spent years trying to change its image, however, and prove it can also be a place for video makers to earn money. Part of that push has been Vimeo On Demand, an iTunes equivalent for creative and usually independent works. Starting today, it's available on Roku hardware, giving Vimeo and its users a larger potential audience.

Before now Vimeo, one of the internet's largest video platforms, didn't support Chromecast streaming through its Android app. It felt like a glaring omission, especially since the iOS app was given this functionality almost a year ago. Never mind, because to quote the company's update notes in the Play Store, "late is better than never." With the latest version of the Android app you can tap the Cast icon and beam whatever you're watching, be it a Staff Pick, On Demand documentary or the Vimeo-funded High Maintenance, to your dongle-powered TV or monitor. Groovy.
