Modder makes the GameCube Joy-Cons you've always wanted for your Switch

If you're a veteran Nintendo gamer, you've likely dreamed of using a GameCube controller with the Switch -- if just to recreate that 2001 vibe of playing Super Smash Bros. Melee in the family den. For mod creator Shank, that's now a practical reality. The hardware enthusiast has torn apart a Wavebird wireless controller to turn into a pair of Joy-Cons that share nearly all the functionality of the official controllers, including the tiny shoulder buttons used for shared-screen multiplayer (it's as awkward as you'd expect, Shank said). About the only thing missing is infrared.

    Nintendo explores 'bendable' Switch controllers

Nintendo is apparently concerned that the Switch's Joy-Con controllers might not be flexible enough. The console maker recently applied for a US patent on Joy-Cons with hinges that would let the top half "bend" to provide a more ergonomic grip. This would work whether or not the controllers are attached -- side sections would let you slide them on to the Switch's rails.

Report: Nintendo will repair Switch Joy-Cons with 'drift' issue for free

Nintendo has reportedly instructed customer support representatives to offer free Joy-Con repairs with "drift" issues for free. According to an internal memo obtained by Vice, the gaming giant has told support reps not to charge customers for Joy-Con repairs if the controllers are manifesting the infamous drifting behavior that causes them to move things on the screen on their own. They were even told that it's no longer necessary to request for proof of purchase -- they can take customers at their word. In addition, Nintendo has apparently advised representatives to issue refunds if they previously paid for a Joy-Con repair, which typically costs $40 or so.

Nintendo faces class action lawsuit over Switch controller 'drift'

As successful as the Nintendo Switch has been, there's been a consistent headache: Joy-Con drift. Many gamers have reported the controllers' analog sticks registering non-existent input (hence drifting), forcing players to either adapt or send the peripherals in for repairs. There may be legal pressure to do something, though. Lawyers at Chimicles Schwartz Kriner & Donaldson-Smith have filed a class action lawsuit in the US against Nintendo alleging that its sells Joy-Cons knowing they're "defective." The suit also maintains that Nintendo refuses to fix the drifting for free, and hasn't even acknowledged the issue despite widespread reports.

Nintendo's next Labo kit should include these laser tag guns

If you wish Nintendo's Labo projects did more to help your friends partake in the fun, you're in for a treat. Japanese tinkerers Miyuki and Ran have developed a homebrew laser tag system that uses a Switch for some two-player blaster action. The duo used Labo's Toy-Con Garage to turn pairs of Joy-Cons (which have infrared sensors and emitters) into both light guns and targets, with the Switch itself both recording hits and reducing a player's "health" as they take shots.

Nintendo Switch update makes it easy to find missing Joy-Cons

    by

Nintendo's latest Switch update doesn't exactly come with anything mind blowing, but it has a huge list of improvements people have been asking for. One of those is the ability to find paired controllers by making them vibrate. Unless they're too far into the abyss known as the inside of your couch, that would make it easier to find those relatively tiny Joy-Cons, especially if you have the black ones. Do you use a pro controller instead? Well, take note that the version 3.0.0 update makes it possible to plug it in and use it as a wired option to avoid input lag.
