Valve just dropped a Steam Client Beta update that finally introduces a sought-after feature. The Steam Remote Play service will now offer 4K support, providing a series of presets to allow gamers to find the perfect high-res settings for preferred titles. Prior to this update, 4K was still possible when playing remotely, but it required plenty of experimentation with settings and didn’t always work right.

After a brisk, one-month beta, Valve's new Remote Play Together feature is now available to all Steam users. As the name suggests, it allows you and up to three other friends to play split-screen games with one another over the internet. It emulates the experience of playing a game on the couch with a group of buddies by capturing your friends' inputs and then streaming it back to your device. Once you're in-game, you can talk to your friends over voice chat.

Valve didn't wait long to give you a chance to play local multiplayer games online. The latest Steam beta client now includes Remote Play Together support that lets friends join in multiplayer experiences that would normally require sitting on the same couch. Only the host needs a copy of the game -- everyone else just needs a controller or (with permission) access to the keyboard or mouse. You can play across computer platforms (a Mac player could join a Windows game, for instance), and voice chat lets you yell at players as if you were there.

The latest update to the PlayStation 4 operating system has a feature that some users have craved for years. From today, the console will now properly sync with iOS devices, giving iPhone and iPad users the ability to game with the PS4 Remote Play app. Given that Sony first launched remote play (for its Xperia Z3) in October 2014, it's certainly been a long time coming.

  • Sony to refund Vita customers in FTC settlement over false ads

Sony Computer Entertainment America has settled with the FTC over charges that it produced false and misleading advertisement during the Vita's launch campaign from late 2011 to early 2012. Sony will provide refunds to Vita customers who purchased the device before June 1, 2012 – either a $25 cash or credit refund, or a $50 voucher for select games and services. Sony will email eligible customers after the settlement is finalized. The FTC alleges that some of Sony's claims about the Vita were misleading, including that the Vita "would revolutionize gaming mobility" by enabling remote play and cross-platform play with the PS3, allowing players to start a game on PS3 and finish it on Vita. Sony is barred from similar advertising practices in the future. The FTC alleges the following: "Sony claimed, for example, that PS Vita users could pause any PS3 game at any time and continue to play the game on their PS Vita from where they left off. This feature, however, was only available for a few PS3 games, and the pause-and-save capability described in the ads varied significantly from game to game.... Sony's PS Vita ads falsely implied that consumers who owned the 3G version of the device (which cost an extra $50 plus monthly fees) could engage in live, multi-player gaming through a 3G network. In fact, consumers could not engage in live, multiplayer gaming.... In reality, most PS3 games were not remote playable on the PS Vita."

  • PS4 remote play comes to new Xperia Z3 tablets

The Xperia Z3 compact tablet line will feature remote play with the PS4, Sony announced today. The Z3 is the only tablet to have remote play with PS4, though the Vita allows these functions, too (and it comes with a controller already attached). Connect the Z3 to a PS4 over Wi-Fi and users are able to play PS4 games, with a PS4 controller, on the tablet. Players can control the PS4, watch games remotely and interact with PS4 friends on the Z3. Sony also announced a new Game Control Mount that hooks onto the PS4 controller and holds the Z3 in place. • Sony PS4 Remote Play and Game Control Mount coming to Z3 devices

Sony has announced that its new Z3 lineup will exclusively get PS4 Remote Play, a service that has so far only worked with the Vita. The console will detect your Z3 device over WiFi and unlock it, letting you play with a DualShock4 wireless controller using the new GCM10 Game Control Mount (see the image below). On top of playing games, you'll also be able to use a Z3 device as a second screen to view livestreams (of games, of course) or chat over the PlayStation Network. Sony kept using the word "exclusive" with Remote Play, so if you're using a non-Z3 handset, it seems you'll be out of luck. The mount and service will likely arrive when the Z3s do, along with the pricing.

  • Vita TV's PS4 remote play functionality is now live

A new update has enabled PS4 remote play functionality for the PlayStation Vita TV, Sony's tiny box that hosts select games from the Vita and past PlayStation consoles on a user's television. As demonstrated by Kotaku, the update is live in Japan and obtainable through an Asian PlayStation account. Kotaku notes the presence of input lag though, which was troublesome enough to hinder precision-based gameplay, such as nailing headshots on citizens in Infamous: Second Son. The PS4 remote play feature was discussed during the Vita TV's reveal, but we're all still waiting on a decision from Sony as to whether the device will reach the Western audience. Prior to the Vita TV's launch in Japan, Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Andrew House said that Sony was "very encouraged" by the Western audience's response to the device. Sony Japan executive Masayasu Ito also said Sony would have to "watch the environment and identify what other services are available" in the US and European markets before making a decision on localizing the Vita TV. Nvidia's Android-based handheld game system, Shield, will receive a temporary price drop for April, cutting the system by $50 to $199 for the month. The price cut is accompanied by new features arriving in a software update for the system next week, including a new user interface for the Shield's button-mapping feature. The addition lets players use the Shield's physical buttons for touch-based games on the Google Play store. The hardware company will also add a beta version of its away-from-home game streaming support feature. Players will be able to remotely play PC games on their Shield, waking up and logging in to locked PCs while on the go. Additionally, the update will add bluetooth keyboard and mouse support for those that want to hook their Shields up to a TV to play on a bigger screen. Lastly, the Nvidia Shield will receive the latest version of the Android operating system, nicknamed KitKat (version 4.4.2). Nvidia also recently revealed that Valve's popular first-person puzzler Portal will receive a full PC port on Android with full Shield support. [Image: Nvidia]

  • Vita can't stand in for Wii U GamePad in PS4 Rayman Legends

The PlayStation Vita will not work with the PS4 the same way that the Wii U works with its GamePad for the next-gen version of Rayman Legends, Ubisoft has confirmed. On Nintendo's system, one player can control the helper character Murfy using the GamePad, while another player controls Rayman or one of his friends on the TV. Use of the Vita, however GamePad-like it may be, will be limited to Remote Play. Senior Game Designer Emile Morel broke the news when he answered a fan's question on the PlayStation Blog, saying, "you cannot control Murfy in touch mode on the PS Vita, because even in Remote Play mode you will continue to play the same version of the game when you use the PS4 joystick." Ubisoft will also not be offering a discount for those upgrading from the PS3 version, and the online challenge rankings for the PS3 and PS4 will be separate. Rayman Legends comes to North American PS4 and Xbox One systems tomorrow, and EU region consoles on February 21. [Image: Ubisoft]

  • PS Vita on sale for $160 at Radioshack [Update: 3G version in stock!]

Update: It looks like Radioshack has found a few extra PlayStation Vita units kicking around its warehouse. The 3G/WiFi edition is priced at $160. If the units sell out and you want to be notified of when either the Wi-Fi or 3G model is back in stock, you can opt-in to email notifications through the retailer's website. It's been a long time since we've seen a Radioshack but apparently they're still around. In fact, the electronics retailer is currently selling the Wi-Fi version of the PS Vita for $160 - and that includes free shipping on all orders over $25. The deal is impeccably timed to coincide with the launch of the PS4, which goes on sale in the US this Friday. Last week Sony prepared the handheld to play nice with the PS4 by issuing the 3.00 update for PS Vita, unlocking Remote Play features through a new "PS4 Link" app. The app unlocks playing "most" PS4 games on your Vita over Wi-Fi through Remote Play and opens up the handheld as a supplementary second-screen display for select PS4 games.

  • Diablo 3 PS4 won't feature Remote Play (but may in the future) [Update]

Though Blizzard would like to allow players to enjoy the upcoming PlayStation 4 version of Diablo 3 on their Sony-branded handhelds, the House That Warcraft Built sees the Vita's screen itself as reason to nix Remote Play functionality. At this weekend's Blizzcon event, Gamespot asked senior level designer Matthew Berger about the possibility of Remote Play, and were immediately shot down. "The Vita is an amazing piece of kit, but the screen is still smaller," stated Berger. "And when you look at - and also it has its own aspect ratio - and when you look at Diablo 3, there's a lot happening on-screen already. You get surrounded by your enemies, lots of effects flying off in every direction. The inventory can be pretty complicated to navigate sometimes when you have lots of items." Despite this, Berger says Blizzard is still considering the feature. "[Remote Play] would be a little bit more of stretch. It's kind of percolating in the back of our mind, but we don't really have any plans right now," he said. Corroborating the eventual possibility of Remote Play is senior console producer Julie Humpreys. "[Remote Play] is something we are looking into," Humphreys told CVG. "I would say we are in the earliest stages of looking at that. We want to make sure that it is readable and is a good user experience." Diablo 3 makes its PlayStation 4 debut at some point during 2014. Update: Earlier today, Gamespot again asked Berger about Remote Play, and were met with a decidedly different response. "As long as PS4 supports Remote Play, [Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls] will support it," Berger said. Update 2: Blizzard moved in to clear up confusion. The official Diablo Twitter account tweeted, ""Will Remote Play on the PS Vita be available for Diablo 3 Ultimate Edition on PS4?" The answer is yes, and it's awesome!" along with a photo of it in action.
