HP is joining Acer in making Chrome OS devices that can do away with the keyboard. It just unveiled the Chromebook x2, a 12.3-inch laptop that's really a detachable tablet -- unlike the earlier Chromebook x360, you can leave the keyboard behind instead of merely flipping it behind the screen (though you can do that too). There's an included pen for note-taking and sketching, and you'll find a 13-megapixel rear camera on top of a more conventional 5-megapixel front shooter.

HP's ZBook computers have always been targeted at power-hungry professionals, but with last year's X2 detachable hybrid, the company started exploring new form factors. Now HP is adding a convertible PC to its pro family, the ZBook Studio x360 G5. Just like its other x360 machines, it has a hinge that can be flipped all the way around, letting you use it as a large tablet, or in a tent orientation. HP also claims it's the most powerful convertible around, since it can be configured with 8th generation, six-core Intel Xeon CPUs and NVIDIA's Quadro P1000 graphics.

Today, HP revealed the LaserJet Pro M15 and M28 series, which are the smallest laser printers in their class. These tiny printers are about the height of a No. 2 pencil, yet still are able to print 18–19 pages per minute. These printers are also mobile-optimized; thanks to the HP Smart App, users can control the printer entirely from their smartphones. The printer supports Apple AirPrint, Google Cloud Print, WiFi Direct and is Mopria certified.

Thousands of people lined up at trendy Austin bar Icenhauer at SXSW 2018, but they weren't waiting for a refreshing handcrafted cocktail or finger food. Instead, they were trying to get into HP and Intel's "Digital Artistry House," where a handful of artsy demos were set up. And from a quick glance around Rainey Street's other brand-dominated establishments, no other spot was as hot as Icenhauer.

Laptop updates are no longer confined to boring iterative improvements year after year. We're starting to see useful new features being introduced to PCs, even if they aren't the most groundbreaking ideas. Case in point: HP's new business notebooks will not only sport the latest eighth-generation Intel Core chipsets, but also come with "world-facing" mics for clearer conference calls, among other new tools.

Based on what we've seen from HP's VR backpack setup, as well as its Windows Mixed Reality Headset, the company is clearly taking virtual reality seriously. Now, HP is trying even harder to establish itself as a VR player for its commercial customers. The company announced a "Professional Edition" of its Windows headset today, as well a "VR Launch Kit" to help developers learn the ropes of the new medium. Additionally, it's also bringing some much-needed CPU upgrades to its Z4 Workstation, making it an even better rig for both running and creating virtual reality.

Saudi Arabia has released almost a hundred people detained on corruption allegations, and one of them is Prince Alwaleed bin Talal. The billionaire prince known as the "Arabian Warren Buffet" is one of the tech's biggest investors and known for having stakes in various tech corporations. His current and former investments include Apple, Amazon, AOL, eBay, HP, Twitter and Lyft. bin Talal was arrested in November when the government launched a massive crackdown on corruption and confined at the Ritz-Carlton in Riyadh. The other detainees were released after reaching financial settlements -- authorities expect to raise $100 billion from them -- but it's unclear if bin Talal also offered to pay.

There's been a discouraging trend in computer shipments recently; year-to-year growth has declined steadily over the last six years. But now, IDC has a bit of good news: It looks as though the PC market actually grew 0.7 percent in the holiday season of 2017. This contradicts IDC's forecast, which predicted a 1.7 percent decrease in shipments.

In 2017, HP chose some surprising places to launch its laptops and show off its technology -- music festivals like Coachella and Panorama. Here at a more conventional tech launchpad, the company unveiled a couple of new laptops: the Spectre x360 15 and the Envy x2. We had a chat with Chief Technology Officer and VP of Product Experience Mike Nash to learn more about the company's devices launched at CES, as well as how it determines what new features to add to its laptops. Hands-on with NVIDIA's giant gaming displays and GeForce Now on PC

Nobody expected NVIDIA to get into the big screen TV world, but that's precisely what it's doing with its new Big Format Gaming Displays (BFGD). They're 65-inch 4K screens oriented more at games than movie viewing, with heaps of technology that players will appreciate, like low latency, G-Sync and NVIDIA's Shield built-in. We got a look at Destiny 2 being played on HP's set (more are coming from ASUS and Acer), and I can confirm that it delivers one of the smoothest gaming experiences I've seen yet from a big-screen TV.

HP's Z 3D camera brings Sprout 3D capture to any PC

HP's Sprout all-in-one PCs have always been intriguing: They're ideal 3D capture machines, thanks to their unique cameras. But they're also inconvenient if you already have a powerful computer and monitor of your own. That's where the new Z 3D camera comes in. HP basically ripped out the 3D capture feature from the Sprout Pro and turned it into a portable accessory that can be attached to almost any monitor (as long as it has a flat back). It'll let VR artists and other 3D creators easily capture real-world objects, without needing to invest in a specialized PC.

HP unveils an Intel version of its Envy x2 hybrid

It turns out HP has another Envy x2 hybrid laptop coming this year, in addition to the Snapdragon-powered model it unveiled last month. As you'd expect, instead of a mobile chip, it features an Intel seventh-generation Core processor (a pity HP couldn't fit in an eighth-generation chip) along with optional LTE connectivity. It's more of a traditional Surface competitor for people who aren't yet ready to adopt a Snapdragon chip for their computing needs. And, based on what we've seen, it'll offer up some worthy competition to Microsoft's machines.

You'd be hard-pressed to see a big difference between HP's last Spectre x360 15 and the new version of the convertible it's debuting this week at CES. Aside from the slightly edgier styling this year, with sharp corners and lines replacing friendlier rounded ones, they look pretty similar. Just like its smaller sibling, the new Spectre x360 15 is mostly an incremental upgrade, with faster hardware meant to make it a better MacBook Pro competitor. Notably, though, it features Intel's new eighth-generation Core CPU with AMD's Radeon RX Vega M graphics, so it won't be a slouch when it comes to gaming.

HP is getting into the game streaming arena -- though probably not in the way you'd expect. With the aptly titled "Omen Game Stream" app, it'll integrate the feature in all of its gaming PCs later this spring. Basically, you'll be able to take advantage of the powerful hardware from an Omen machine to play games on just about any PC over the internet. It's the sort of thing we've seen from NVIDIA and Valve, both of which offer in-home streaming solutions. With this app, HP could make life a lot easier for gamers who need their Overwatch fix when they're away from their rigs.

HP is adding two Chromebooks to its lineup, which are essentially refreshed versions of its Chromebook 11 G5 that debuted in June 2016. While both new models feature the same processor, storage and memory options, they differ in size: The Chromebook 14 G5 has a 14-inch screen, while the Chromebook 11 G6 Education Edition caters to the school crowd with an optional HD touchscreen on a 180-degree hinge that lets users fold the screen flat. Both will go on sale next month.

Qualcomm had so much news to share this year that it decided to throw a three-day "Tech Summit" in Hawaii for hundreds of press and analysts. In addition to unveiling the latest generation of its high-end mobile processor, Qualcomm also announced new Snapdragon-powered laptops from HP and ASUS, a new dedicated Hi-Fi audio DAC and a partnership with AMD. Speaking of partnerships, many of the companies that work with Qualcomm also attended the event to discuss the future of technologies like AI, 5G, AR and VR.
