'Jessica Jones' props will hit the auction block in December
If you've ever fancied yourself as a private eye with superpowers, you'll soon have the chance to get your hands on a desk that might make you look and feel the part. Props and costumes from the Netflix series Marvel's Jessica Jones, including the eponymous PI's desk, will hit the auction block in December.
'Luke Cage' showrunner jumps ship for Amazon
Netflix's decision to scrap Luke Cage (among other Marvel shows) might have an upside for its rivals -- Amazon has struck a deal with the superhero production's showrunner, Cheo Hodari Coker. He'll develop and produce content for Prime Video under his Fighting 99th Entertainment brand. It's too soon to know what he'll make, but he noted that "Amazon is the future" and appreciated its "bespoke, specific approach" to creating shows. He's not spending much time mourning his former production, then.
Netflix and Disney cancel 'Daredevil' too
Last month Netflix announced two of the "Defenders" series it produces with Marvel and Netflix had come to an end, and now it's pulling the plug on Daredevil too. Season three debuted just a few weeks ago starring Charlie Cox as the blind hero protecting Hell's Kitchen, but that's it -- for now. In a statement, Netflix said "We're thankful to our partners at Marvel, showrunner Erik Oleson, the show's writers, stellar crew and incredible cast including Charlie Cox as Daredevil himself, and we're grateful to the fans who have supported the show over the years. While the series on Netflix has ended, the three existing seasons will remain on the service for years to come, while the Daredevil character will live on in future projects for Marvel." As Disney has ramped up development on its Disney+ service, the two sides haven't been able to come up with agreements to continue these series any longer. Still, there's a possibility Disney could turn around and introduce something for its network now. Meanwhile, Netflix is spending money in other areas, although once Disney+ launches in 2019 it will be interesting to see how it responds. Daredevil was the first Marvel/Netflix show to hit the service in 2015, and now only Jessica Jones and The Punisher are left. Hopefully we have a few more hallway fight scenes ahead of us before a (seemingly) inevitable end comes to them too.
Netflix will raise $2 billion to pay for more original content
It's hard to deny that Netflix is a powerhouse when it comes to original content. The company wants to ensure it remains on top, though, and to do that it's willing to go into debt. Netflix announced today that it plans to raise $2 billion in debt (rather than offering equity in the company) to fund "general corporate purposes, which may include content acquisitions, production and development, capital expenditures, investments, working capital and potential acquisitions and strategic transactions," according to a release.
Netflix cancels 'Luke Cage' a week after dropping 'Iron Fist'
When Marvel and Netflix announced Iron Fist wouldn't return for a third season, there were reports Luke Cage was close to being renewed. That is not the case, however, as they announced tonight that the show will end after two seasons, even though additional seasons for Jessica Jones and The Punisher are already on order. In a statement, the companies said "Unfortunately, Marvel's Luke Cage will not return for a third season. Everyone at Marvel Television and Netflix is grateful to the dedicated showrunner, writers, cast and crew who brought Harlem's Hero to life for the past two seasons, and to all the fans who have supported the series." The news comes on the same day Netflix premiered season three of Daredevil, which was the first of its Defenders TV shows to launch in a partnership with Disney and Marvel. Now, Disney is preparing to launch its own streaming service -- with its own lineup of Marvel hero-based TV shows -- and whether it's due to weak streaming numbers or simply choosing to use that part of its content budget elsewhere, these shows are dropping off. Variety reports that there were talks for a third season, but that Netflix decided it would "not be feasible."
Netflix cancels 'Marvel's Iron Fist' after two seasons
It has been nearly five years since Disney and Netflix teamed up to launch a suite of Marvel TV series based on characters in The Defenders, and after two seasons Iron Fist is ending its run. There's no word on whether or not the character will come to Disney's (name still TBA) streaming service when that launches, but Deadline reports what the companies said in a joint statement: "We're thankful to the fans who have watched these two seasons, and for the partnership we've shared on this series. While the series on Netflix has ended, the immortal Iron Fist will live on." As it stands, Daredevil season three is set to premiere in a week, while additional seasons are on order for Jessica Jones and The Punisher. According to Deadline, Luke Cage is close to being renewed soon, so maybe we'll still see Jessica Henwick, Finn Jones and others from the series pop up there or in another Defenders team-up show.
’Luke Cage’ season two introduces a powerful new enemy
Today, Netflix released a trailer for the second season of Marvel's Luke Cage, the story of a bulletproof man (Mike Colter) who is fighting to save Harlem from forces that want to do the local population harm. The second season premieres on Netflix on June 22nd.
'Luke Cage' season two premieres June 22nd
Jessica Jones isn't the only streaming Marvel show getting a long due follow-up. Netflix has posted a teaser clip confirming that Luke Cage's second season will premiere on June 22nd. The video itself doesn't reveal much about the story, but it's evident from the description that the stakes have changed. Cage is now a hero, but that makes him a bigger target -- and a "formidable new foe" will make him deal with the "fine line" between a champion and the villains he's supposed to be fighting.
Netflix and Hulu already won 21 Emmys ahead of the main event
The Creative Arts Emmy Awards took place this weekend and both Netflix and Hulu put on a good showing. Netflix raked in 16 awards while Hulu programming took in five -- a positive preview for how each streaming service will fare during the primetime Emmy Awards, which will take place on September 17th. Overall, Netflix was at the top of the winner's list, coming in second to HBO.
'The Defenders' Comic-Con trailer features punching, heroes
Stop us if you've heard this one before: There's a threat facing New York, and a few of Marvel's punch-happy heroes need to clean it up. Based on the new trailer shown tonight at Comic-Con -- where, Deadline reports, Netflix screened the entire first episode -- the plot of every Netflix Marvel series so far will remain consistent with this eight episode The Defenders mini-series that arrives August 18th.
'The Defenders' trailer unites Netflix's Marvel universe
Five seasons of Netflix-Marvel goodness (or, in the case of Iron Fist, mediocrity) have all built up to this. Building on last month's teaser, Netflix has released the first full-blown trailer for The Defenders. Like The Avengers movies, the project is a culmination of many interlocking 'cinematic universe' ideas. Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist -- all four TV shows stand on their own, but share characters, lore and the occasional cameo appearance that bind them together. The Defenders, a team-up of New York's street-level heroes, will prove whether Netflix can deliver such an ambitious, expensive crossover project in the streaming world.
Netflix reveals 'The Defenders' arrival in security footage
Netflix has a healthy roster of Marvel shows at the moment with the likes of Iron Fist, Daredevil, Jessica Jones and Luke Cage. Those worlds are about to be consolidated, as the titular characters are set to team up for Netflix's The Defenders later this year. Today, we found out when exactly that's going to happen thanks to a cryptic teaser video.
Netflix gives 'Luke Cage' a second season
Marvel must be feeling glad that it bet on a slew of internet-only superhero shows -- Netflix has confirmed that it's renewing Luke Cage for a second season. There's no mention of a date for the new episodes (the teaser's "always forward" is a nod to Pop's motto), but the mere mention of more Cage is likely enough for now.

Netflix previews 'Luke Cage' and more Marvel at Comic-Con
The San Diego Comic-Con is underway, and Netflix kicked things off with a few announcements about its various Marvel superhero series. Luke Cage is due September 30th, and its teaser trailer brings about a minute and a half of Mike Colter fighting bad guys in hallways. The Iron Fist series' release date is still TBA, but its trailer showed off a hint of what's to come there as well. Last but not least the preview for The Defenders leaves much more to the imagination but lets us know that as originally promised, Cage, Jessica Jones, Daredevil and Iron Fist will team up to take on bad guys in 2017. Speaking of Daredevil, Netflix also confirmed that the Hell's Kitchen hero will get a third season which is "coming soon" -- check out all the videos below.
Netflix debuts Marvel's 'Luke Cage' on September 30th
If you've been waiting for Netflix to flesh out its grittier Marvel shows with the release of Luke Cage, you now have a date to mark on your calendar. Lead actor Michael Colter has revealed that the unbreakable hero's show will premiere on September 30th, or half a year after Daredevil's second season kicks off. Colter didn't say what the new show will entail, but the basic premise is no secret: Cage moves to Harlem following the events of Jessica Jones, and he'll face enemies ranging from Black Mariah to Cottonmouth. There's no certainty that Luke Cage will be a hit, but the effort invested in the first two Netflix-only Marvel shows (and Colter's performance in Jessica Jones) suggests that it's in good hands.
Netflix to double its original programming in 2016
On Monday, Netflix head of content Ted Sarandos announced that the company will double the number of original shows it produces in 2016. Next year, Netflix will deliver 31 original series compared to 16 in 2015. Additionally, the company reportedly plans to release 10 feature films, 12 documentaries, 10 stand-up specials and a whopping 30 children's programs to enhance its For Kids section. This marks a significant shift in Netflix's strategy and puts it on equal footing with traditional premium cable heavyweights like HBO and Showtime. Sarandos argues that since original programming grants Netflix full exclusivity and global rights forever, they're a better investment than haggling for outside content. Such a change in thinking could prove vital to the company's continued international expansion.[Image Credit: Getty]
