Kris Holt04.14.2021Flirt with Satan, but not your best friend, in emo adventure 'Afterparty'
You can flirt with Satan in Afterparty. In the coming narrative-adventure game from Night School Studio, the Prince of Darkness is hosting a rager on the outskirts of hell's waiting room, a city where fresh corpses are processed before being shipped off for an eternity of torture. There's a standing challenge for anyone who passes through: If you can outdrink Satan, you get to return to Earth. So, lifelong yet mysteriously deceased best friends, Lola and Milo, try to infiltrate Satan's party, accept his bet and, in the process of trying to drink more than Lucifer himself, they can even see if he's down to clown.
Jessica Conditt04.10.2019'Oxenfree' developer's next game is about drinking with Satan
2016 saw the release of many YA-themed games, and Oxenfree was one of the highlights. Developer Night School Studio is ready to show off its next project and, well, this one is a little different. In Afterparty, players assume the role of a pair of college seniors who have their revelry interrupted by their untimely death. As a result, they are doomed to a pub crawl in hell, as the adventure game follows them from bar to bar on a quest to outdrink Satan himself and escape.
Richard Lawler12.14.2017Paranormal thriller 'Oxenfree' teased for Nintendo Switch
We love Oxenfree around these parts. The paranormal thriller captures the awkwardness of being a teenager incredibly well, tasking players to uncover the mystery of an abandoned military base while managing relationships with friends along for the ride. It's already available on mobile, PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, but the developers at Night School Studio have started teasing that it'll appear on Nintendo Switch as well.

Tom Regan05.11.2017Teenage paranormal thriller 'Oxenfree' now fits in your pocket
Spooky adventure game Oxenfree has made its way to mobile. Developer Night School's sidescrolling tale debuted on PC and Xbox One early last January, with a stop on PlayStation 4 last May that added, among other things, a New Game+ mode. Now it's available for iOS devices. At the minimum, iPhone 5S and iPad Air running iOS 9.1 or newer. The iTunes listing says that the game has been reworked a bit for the platforms and features "custom touch controls." Sounds like it should make working through the game's radio and cassette puzzles a little more tactile. To celebrate launch week Night School has knocked 20 percent off the regular price, bringing it down to $3.99.
Timothy J. Seppala03.16.2017Indie game award finalists include 'Hyper Light Drifter' and 'Inside'
Now that media outlets have handed out awards to blockbuster games, it's time for the indies to shine. The Independent Games Festival has posted the finalists for its main competition's 2017 awards, and there are a few competitors who clearly stand out from the pack. Both the retro hack-and-slasher Hyper Light Drifter and bleak side-scroller Inside are nominated not only for the Seumas McNally grand prize, but also the audio and visual design awards. Other titles receiving multiple nods will definitely sound familiar if you've been following the scene, including the hacking-themed puzzler Quadrilateral Cowboy and the chaotic food hit Overcooked.
Jon Fingas01.09.2017Why young-adult video games are thriving
In the recent hit game Inside, you play a child on the run through a mysterious and horrifying surveillance state straight out of 1984. Oxenfree stars a group of teenagers with a complicated history arriving at a spooky island for an ill-advised camping trip. Life Is Strange puts you in the shoes of a young girl at a boarding school with burgeoning time-warp powers and messed-up friends. The common thread among these three highly acclaimed indie games is obvious: They star youthful protagonists facing confusing coming-of-age moments in worlds tinted by magic and mystery. They're what you might call "young adult" video games.
Zach Hines08.24.2016'Mr. Robot' has its own official mobile game
If you're looking for some extra Mr. Robot while the second season plays out, then there's now a mobile game to keep you entertained. Mr. Robot: 1.51exfiltratiOn is available for iOS and Android, and is packaged up like a fictional corporate messenger platform for the fictional E.Corp. Once inside, players will begin communicating with colleagues and hunt for data that can uncover the evils that lurk at the company's heart.
Daniel Cooper08.17.2016The trippy, haunting 'Oxenfree' soundtrack is on vinyl
Oxenfree's soundtrack is an electronica daydream that fades into a bumping nightmare; it's the aural interpretation of the sun setting over an abandoned, beachside military base packed with deadly secrets. In other words, it's perfectly suited to the game's haunting storyline and award-winning visual style. Thanks to iam8bit, the Oxenfree soundtrack is now available in vinyl form, including art from comic illustrator Austin James (Wet Brain) and a holographic portal on the front cover.
Jessica Conditt05.26.2016Paranormal thriller 'Oxenfree' hits PS4 in May
Oxenfree is an acid trip wrapped in an enigma and smothered in nacho cheese -- and on May 31st, it's coming to PlayStation 4. Oxenfree hit Steam and Xbox One in January, and both of these versions get upgrades on May 31st, too. Developer Night School Studio created a New Game+ mode for the Steam, Xbox One and PS4 editions, allowing those who have already finished Oxenfree to dive back in and experience a new, yet familiar, adventure. New Game+ includes fresh dialogue choices, new locations and alternate endings (on top of the game's multiple existing conclusions). "We've heard emphatic, wildly differing opinions on how the game ended, both giddy and rage-filled," Night School co-founder Sean Krankel says. "So, without getting too spoilery, we wanted to make something that let those players push on the surreal rules that govern the island even more by holding up a proverbial mirror to the creatures they've been dealing with. This mode is definitely for the true fans."
Jessica Conditt04.27.2016Rock the vote for your favorite game in the GDC awards
Want to make your voice heard in this year's Game Developer's Choice Awards? How about doing the same for the Independent Game Festival's accolades? Boy howdy, you're covered in both cases. Winners will be revealed on March 16th and the awards will stream on Twitch starting at 6:30 PM Pacific that day.
Timothy J. Seppala02.12.2016'Oxenfree' and the sweet spot of supernatural, teenage drama
"Do you want a cigarette?" It's a simple question for most people. But for a high school senior surrounded by friends, acquaintances and crushes, the inquiry can be a minefield of reputation management. The question becomes even more treacherous when that high schooler is an adventurous, blue-haired young woman who happens to be drinking with her judgmental peers on a secluded beach next to a decommissioned military base. You know, normal teenager stuff. This is the opening scene of Oxenfree, Night School Studio's supernatural adventure game that landed today on Xbox One and PC. Oxenfree features terrifying creatures, cave diving, breaking and entering, mystery, death—and, of course, teenage drama.
