Cast your vote for March's free PlayStation 4 indie game
With the Iowa caucuses behind us, it's understandable if you want to make your voice heard again before this November. Well, PlayStation has your back because Vote to Play is making a return. Starting February 9th, you can once again vote for which of three indie game candidates will be a free PS Plus download for March. The program's been on hiatus since August for whatever reason, but this month's crop looks pretty solid.
NVIDIA's GeForce game sharing feature is available in beta
NVIDIA's GeForce Experience Share has been released in early access beta, giving PC gamers the ability to invite friends to take over a game or play cooperatively. Via an in-game overlay menu, players can use the "Shadowplay" option to continuously capture a stream, then broadcast it to Twitch, other players, or YouTube as an upload. NVIDIA said that the feature can save the last 5 to 20 minutes of game play at up to 4K (3,840 x 2,160) with very little performance hit. Players can also send a live game stream to Twitch via the "broadcast" feature.
NVIDIA is testing online game sharing for GeForce Experience
You know that awesome PlayStation 4 feature that lets you digitally "pass" your controller to a friend over the internet? Soon you'll be able do that on a PC, too. The next big update to NVIDIA's GeForce Experience software includes something called GameStream Co-op -- a feature that pipes your games audio, video and controls to a friend over a low-latency stream. It's basically the same thing as PS4 SharePlay, and it sounds just as spectacular.
PS4's next update brings Suspend for games, 60fps Share Play
Confirming the leaked information from last week, Sony announced tonight that it's testing a big update for the PS4. Codenamed "Yukimura", v2.50 it will add the Suspend/Resume feature we've been awaiting since before the system launched. That feature will let gamers put the system in standby, then come right back and resume playing like nothing happened. According to a blog post the feature will be supported by "almost" all PS4 games, although there's no word yet on which ones. We're also getting the ability to upgrade PSN sub-accounts to Master accounts (especially useful for gamers that have gone from kids to adults since the PS3 launched), 60fps Remote Play / Share Play and the ability to find the PSN account of your Facebook friends.
PS4's game-sharing feature used to delete a kid's 'Destiny' characters
The very conceit of PlayStation 4's Share Play feature is futuristic as all get-out, but it has a dark side too. Take 5th grader Henry Kramer's recent Destiny woes for example. After virtually passing his DualShock 4 to another player to access a glitch that Kramer hoped would quickly boost his characters, the other party urged him to go grab something from another room as a distraction, according to Eurogamer. Twitch viewers (Kramer was streaming at the time) watched as the nefarious user proceeded to delete two of his three characters: a nearly maxed out level 31 Warlock and a level 26 Titan, but it wasn't until Kramer came back that he saw the damage done. You can hear him crying upon his realization in the video linked here, and, well, it's hard to not be affected by it at least a little bit.
PlayStation 4's SharePlay can be turned off by developers
Sad news, PS4 owners -- that awesome new "virtual-couch" feature Sony added with the console's latest update won't work with the latest Call of Duty game. Users trying to use Share Play to digitally lend Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare to a friend have found the feature completely blocked. "This host's game screen is not displayed because the current scene is a blocked scene for Share Play," the guest's screen will display. "Wait until the blocked scene is finished." Unfortunately, the entire game is flagged as a "blocked scene."
Sony wants to show you how PS4's online game-sharing works
When next Tuesday's 2.0 update hits for the PlayStation 4, Sony will finally turn one of the most ambitious promises it made when the console was first announced a reality. We're talking about Share Play, of course. We know: the ability to virtually hand a controller off to a pal via the internet and have them work through a game's tricky section for you sounds kinda like magic -- the type that only Disney is capable of. But, in theory it sounds pretty simple, and the catch-up king has recently released a video that walks through the process step by step. From the looks of it, the new feature is added as an option from the DualShock 4's Share button. Naturally. How well it all works in the wild, however, remains to be seen.
