The National Transportation Safety Board said in a preliminary report that Tesla's Autopilot system was active at the time of a fatal Model 3 crash in Delray Beach, Florida. Data showed the car's driver, who died in the March 1st incident, activated Autopilot around 10 seconds before the collision. In the approximately eight seconds before the Tesla crashed into a semi truck, the car didn't detect the driver's hands on the wheel.

Tesla's Model 3 Key Fob arrives without 'passive entry' feature

We knew a Tesla Model 3 key fob was coming thanks to an FCC application, now it's available to buy via the EV-maker's website for $150. Or at least it was -- the sleek, black clicker emblazoned with the Tesla logo has already sold out. But, as Electrek notes, the miniature device comes with a huge catch: it doesn't have "passive entry." That's the ability to unlock the vehicle by simply approaching it with the key on you. It's an odd omission considering why it came to be in the first place.

Tesla's ultimate fate, and Elon Musk's reputation has hinged on being able to produce 5,000 units of the Model 3 in a single week. Once that goal was hit, the company could finally shrug off the accusation that it was a billionaire's plaything, out of its depth and unable to compete with Big Auto. Now, at the end of its second financial quarter, the company has confirmed yesterday's rumor that it produced 5,031 Model 3s in seven days.

Tesla temporarily halted production of the Model 3 in order to fix crucial bottlenecks in the assembly process. According to Bloomberg, the line at the company's Fremont plant was shut down between February 20th, through to the 24th. In a statement, Tesla said that its plans include pauses in production to "improve automation and systemically address bottlenecks."

Tesla Model 3 review: the fast and infuriating

I was standing next to the Model 3 when a guy on a bike rode by and yelled, "How is it?" My typical interactions with people who ask about Tesla's affordable sedan (so many people ask me about the car) typically take about five minutes. I point out the highlights and issues I've encountered while driving. Without thinking, I threw him a thumbs up. It was a gut reaction to a car I've come to adore but have also been confused by. I should have yelled, "It's complicated!

Back in August, EPA documents implied that the pricier $44,000 version of Tesla's Model 3 could have a range of 310 miles. Today, the agency confirmed that speculation: The top-tier Model 3 will indeed have a 310-mile range, while the less expensive $35,000 edition will be able to drive an estimated 220 miles before needing to recharge.

Tesla is still struggling to mass-produce the Model 3

Hundreds of thousands of orders for Tesla's Model 3 are pending as the company continues to struggle with producing its mass-market electric vehicle. Tesla dropped its third-quarter earnings report today, which showed it only managed to deliver just 222 units of the car. That's a fraction of the 1,500 it expected to produce in September alone. Tesla's inability to deliver on schedule is problematic and undermines its credibility, since the company reported in the second quarter that it was on track to meet previously announced targets. This could also hurt Tesla in the long run as other automakers start releasing their own EVs into the market.

Tesla delivered its first batch of Model 3s to their owners at the end of July and production was supposed to steadily ramp up during the following months. Elon Musk predicted that around 100 cars would be produced in August, 1,500 in September and 20,000 in December, with 10,000 cars per week being the production target in 2018. But so far that plan has failed. In a recap on third quarter vehicle production and deliveries, Tesla said that only 260 Model 3s were produced and just 220 were delivered.

Shortly after Tesla rolled its first eagerly-anticipated Model 3 off the assembly line back in July, we got a ride in the car and were impressed. But we were skeptical of the decision to forgo a traditional dashboard cluster and cram all the instrument readings into the single center-dash touchscreen, which yanks the driver's attention away from the road. We haven't seen much about how it will work in the interim. But last weekend, a video popped up showing off the Model 3's screen interface, giving us a first look at how drivers will monitor and control the whole car through the touchpad.

On Sunday, Tesla's vehicle lineup will be smaller by one as it discontinues its cheapest Model S option, the Model S 75. That means the all-wheel-drive version -- the 75D -- will take its place as the low-end Model S sedan, currently listed at a starting price of $74,500. Electrek reported the news today and Tesla has confirmed the report to Engadget.

As Fisker told TheStreet, the team behind the vehicle will also introduce some of the tech behind the EMotion, like its battery pack and LIDAR technology for autonomous driving, though that's still in development. The battery can reportedly charge in just nine minutes and the car has a 400 mile range.

Tesla's started off 2017 with a bang, officially opening its Powerpack-filled 20-megawatt energy storage station in Mira Loma, California last week as it looks to start production of its Model 3 at the end of the year. Just don't expect its new, more affordable electric car to come with the larger batteries they stuck in their existing vehicles last year: CEO Elon Musk himself finally confirmed that the Model 3 won't initially come in 100 kWh.

Tesla swept headlines this week by launching a groundbreaking solar roof tile that's better looking and longer lasting than standard shingles. The technology could trickle down to the company's cars too -- Elon Musk hinted that the upcoming Tesla Model 3 could feature a solar roof that melts ice and snow while generating energy from the sun. Meanwhile, legendary automotive designer Henrik Fisker finally unveiled his EMotion sports car, which will be able to drive 400 miles on a single charge when it launches next year. Nissan debuted the first all-electric mobile office, which is housed in a beautifully renovated e-nv200 van. And a Chinese company is getting ready to launch the world's fastest maglev train, which will be able to hit 373 miles per hour.

Henrik Fisker is back in the news with another electric car company. Fisker Inc. (not to be confused with Karma Revero) is the latest venture from the famed designer. Aside from claims that the electric sports car will travel over 400 miles between charges, there won't be anything to see until halfway through next year, according to a report from Bloomberg. "It will definitely be something that when you see it, it will look completely different," Fisker (the person) tells the publication. "It will be sporty and spacious." He hopes to take on the Tesla Model S with the first vehicle, which he describes as a spiritual successor to the 2012 Karma.
