It's a sad time for the HQ Trivia team following the loss of co-founder Colin Kroll, but there is some consolation for the company. Intermedia Labs has made its word game, HQ Words, available to all users (currently only confirmed for iOS) following weeks of beta testing. As before, it's a Wheel of Fortune-style live game where you'll have to correctly guess the missing letters in phrases during successive rounds. If you make three mistakes or don't complete the phrase, you're out. Unlike HQ Trivia, then, you'll have to be much more active if you hope to win real money.

Game shows got their start on TV, so it would only make sense that a modern variant like HQ Trivia would be playable on a TV, right? Right. Accordingly, Intermedia Labs has released an Apple TV version of HQ Trivia that brings the live, win-real-money experience to a bigger screen. It'll seem very familiar if you've played the mobile, but the game is unsurprisingly well-suited to TV -- Scott and other hosts don't have to be squished into the confines of a phone display.

Intermedia Labs' live trivia game HQ has launched a little earlier than expected -- and just in time to mark the end of the year, too. Anyone willing and able to download an early access app can see whether or not the formerly iOS-only title lives up to its reputation. You won't have long to wait before you can give it a shot. HQ is holding a special New Year's Eve game at 11PM Eastern, and there's a chance to win as much as $18,000 if your knowledge is up to snuff.

Intermedia Labs is making good on its promise to deliver HQ for Android by the holidays, if only just. The company has revealed that it's planning to make its previously iOS-only live trivia show available to "all" Android users by January 1st. The app arrived in limited beta on Christmas, and Intermedia is "working quickly" to expand availability over the following week. In short, just wait until the new year if you can't jump in right away.

Since launching in August the HQ app has been attracting hundreds of thousands of players to its twice-daily live trivia games, but so far they're all playing on iPhones. Now, a tweet indicates that Android users will be able to get in on the action soon, since "HQ has a nice little stocking stuffer coming your way." The game came from two Vine co-founders and has seen as many as 400,000 people logging on at 3 and 9 PM ET to try and win cash prizes of up to a few thousand dollars by answering trivia questions. We've seen some attempts at this before, including NBC's short-lived Million Second Quiz game show/app and the Xbox Live game 1 vs. 100. There are other games like Trivia Crack and Quiz Up, but they don't have the same live event hook, while Family Feud Live features tournaments for cash prizes but also contains subscription fees and pushes in-app purchases heavily.

  • Mind the Buzz is fun trivia game with emphasis on education

Mind the Buzz is a fun and educational trivia game for iOS boasting over 12,000 questions in a number of categories. Two modes allow for either playing solo to beat your own scores and gain knowledge or in a group with other friends to challenge each other. The higher your score, the more likely you are to earn badges and rank up on leaderboards. The game requires iOS 7.0 or above and sells for US$0.99, though there is a "lite" version limited to just three categories. The game has an online mode and offline mode. If you're connected to the Internet, sign in to Facebook to import your name and compare scores with friends. Otherwise, just enter your name to begin playing. Choose solo mode and it's just you and the game. The trivia topics include science, movies and television, geography, sports, technology, history, music, arts, nature and lifestyle. At the top are two extras: Total Buzz, essentially a mix of various random questions, and Mission: Impossible for those wishing to take on more difficult questions. The game design and gameplay is undeniably similar to the very popular QuizUp, a free game to answer trivia questions on a variety of topics. The major difference is that in Mind the Buzz, you aren't playing against someone live over the Internet competing for points. Here, you have four lives. Answer as many questions correct as you possibly can, but once you get any four wrong the game ends. The quicker you answer a question, the more points you get. One feature I love is the Wikipedia integration. If you're looking to get a more fulfilled education out of Mind the Buzz, a Wikipedia link appears at the top after each question corresponding to the correct answer. Tapping it opens a window with details about that answer according to its Wikipedia page. Play, then learn, then play, then learn. Excellent idea and well implemented. Over in group mode we have a bit of a different story. Friends either play individually against other friends or together in teams. This isn't online, mind you, it's meant for people enjoying each other's physical presence. Mind the Buzz allows for up to nine players or nine teams, a pretty big number that should please users looking for a new party game. Additionally, players choose between passing the device after each question or playing a game in its entirety and then moving on to the next player to do the same. Earn enough points in the game by answering questions correctly to unlock badges. There's a total of 39 available, most of which are specific to a category. Each badge has three different star levels, too. Compared to QuizUp, Mind the Buzz lacks content. QuizUp has hundreds of topics and over 400,000 questions. Mind the Buzz's 12,000 just pales in comparison. Plus, QuizUp is free while Mind the Buzz costs $0.99. It's not any less enjoyable, but QuizUp simply offers more for less. The one area where Mind the Buzz comes out triumphant is in education thanks to its Wikipedia integration. If that's the type of game you're more interested in, consider Mind the Buzz over its competition.

  • Football fans battle it out with Fans Wars-Pro Football Edition

Some teams in the NFL have developed huge rivalries. Think Bears vs Packers, Chiefs vs Raiders, and Steeler vs Ravens. Now while those teams go at it on the field, their fans can compete with rival fans using Fan Wars-Pro Football Edition. The free universal app requires iOS 7.0 and lots of NFL knowledge to operate. The app pits fans of rival teams against each other through the use of trivia questions and by picking the winners in every NFL game each week. In the trivia area you receive twenty questions that can be answered all at once of one at a time throughout the week. Once you begin you have fifteen seconds to answer each questions. Each correct answer scores you one point and each wrong answer takes away a point. The multiple-choice questions range from easy to hard: which conference are the Colts in to how old was George Blanda when he retired? If you have to ask who George Blanda is you might want to study a bit before taking the trivia quiz. The second level of competition comes with the selection of winners in that week's list of NFL games. Just pick the winners, no point spreads to worry about. As with the trivia section, you get one point for a correct pick and lose a point for each game you pick incorrectly. Your totals in the two segments are then used to figure out your Fan IQ. The scale on this is similar to a real IQ test. If you score around 140 it puts you at the top of NFL fans and you must spend a lot of time on your favorite team and the NFL games. Scores around 60 indicate you know what the NFL is put aren't into fantasy football or watching all the games on TV. Once you get through the first week, you can check your own scores as well as those of the other fans of your team to see how you rank. You will also receive the list of how each team's fans rank. If your team's fan get into the top three, all those fans receive an ad-free experience on the app. So the more true fans of your team you can get to join with you in using Fan Wars-Pro Football Edition, the higher your team's scores will be and you get more bragging rights against your big rivals.

Jackbox Games launched its party game, Fibbage, on Xbox One this week. The You Don't Know Jack developer launched the "humor-laden trivia party game" that emphasizes bluffing by its players on Amazon Fire TV in April. Up to eight players attempt to fool one another by using their mobile devices as controllers, logging in to the game's servers and plugging in a room code to play one another. It is hosted by Cookie Masterson, the iconic narrator of the humorous, often irreverent You Don't Know Jack games. Fibbage will arrive on PS4 and PS3 next month, and will be Cross-Buy compatible. The game costs $6.99 on Xbox One. [Image: Jackbox Games]

The latest episode of YouTube series Did You Know Gaming explores Doom, and it's got more than a few tasty tidbits of info on the world's most famous demons-in-space shooter. For example, while 1993's Doom is widely-cited as having helped usher in the first-person shooter genre, we're somewhat surprised it didn't result in a new generation of kids rolling 20-sided dice, considering how many of the game's roots trace back to Dungeons and Dragons. The series' famous demons? DnD. The floating Cacodemon? DnD twice, as its general design is similar to a Beholder, while its sprite was taken from an Astral Dreadnought.
