The OnePlus 5 and 5T are finally getting Android Pie. The latest version of Google's operating system is being made available to the OnePlus handsets via an over-the-air update. The rollout started this morning and will make its way to most devices over the next couple days according to OnePlus.

Broken promises aren't usually a good thing. Unless, of course, you're talking about OnePlus' confirmation that its OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T models would not be receiving support for Google's Project Treble -- an initiative which gives developers the power to bring software updates to Android users more quickly and easily. In a pleasant turnaround, the OnePlus 5 and 5T have joined the growing list of devices that do support Treble.

The OnePlus 6 vs. the OnePlus 5T and OnePlus 5: What's changed?

The freshly announced OnePlus 6 is easily the company's best-looking device to date, but is it a worthy upgrade for those who are currently carrying a OnePlus 5 or 5T? Our upcoming review will have a more definitive answer, but for now, we can get a rough idea by numbers and specs alone. The most interesting part is perhaps the cameras: While the front camera has remained unchanged, the rear dual cameras saw a progressive upgrade over the three models, with the latest one finally regaining optical image stabilization. Of course, there are also several other notable tweaks here and there. Let's take a look.

OnePlus 5T will only play HD Netflix if you send it in for service

Good news: the OnePlus 5 and 5T can finally play Netflix in HD... if you're willing to go through a convoluted process. OnePlus has launched an update program to enable the higher-resolution video streaming, but the "security processes" involved in enabling HD require that you send your phone in. As it revolves around the WideVine copyright protection used to allow Netflix playback, OnePlus has to perform the update with a wired connection to an "authenticated PC" -- thanks, movie industry.

OnePlus 5 beta adds the 5T's Face Unlock feature

OnePlus really didn't waste any time fulfilling its promise of bringing the 5T's Face Unlock feature to the original 5. The smartphone maker has rolled out an OxygenOS beta that lets OnePlus 5 owners sign in with a quick glimpse at their phone, just like those with newer handsets. This isn't a stable release, so you probably don't want to install this if you can't afford to deal with glitches, but it beats waiting weeks into 2018 to give the feature a try.

The OnePlus 5T's other party trick (besides the tall screen) is Face Unlock: a quick glimpse at your phone is all it takes to sign in. But is it really worth buying just so you don't have to use a fingerprint reader? No -- and OnePlus knows it. Company chief Carl Pei has tweeted that Face Unlock will be available on the OnePlus 5. He hasn't given a time frame or said whether or not there will be any functional differences, but it's good news for anyone worried that the phone maker would purposefully hold back to drive 5T sales.

OnePlus 5T needs an update to play Netflix in HD

The OnePlus 5T is defined by its cinematic 18:9 screen, but don't expect to get the full effect while you're watching your favorite streaming service... at least, not yet. Owners have learned that the 5T and its OnePlus 5 ancestor can't play Netflix or Amazon Prime Video in HD, since they both lack the Widevine rights management certification need to play at anything beyond standard definition. Yes, your $500 pride and joy currently plays video at a lower resolution than phones costing half as much. Thankfully, there's a solution in the works.

OnePlus 5T hands-on: A slightly bigger, slightly better flagship

The OnePlus 5 isn't that old, but it's already been replaced. The company just unveiled its new flagship smartphone at a launch event in Brooklyn, and it's understandably pumped about its new, almost-all-screen design. I've been playing with the 5T for a few days already, and it's a shaping up to be a powerful, pretty machine that's sure to make existing OnePlus 5 owners feel a little envious. If that's you, well, you don't need to feel too left out: In many ways, the 5T is still the same phone from earlier this year.

OnePlus inadvertently left a backdoor on its phones (updated)

OnePlus' security troubles aren't over yet. Users have discovered that many of the company's phones from the past few years (including the OnePlus 5) include a Qualcomm testing app, EngineerMode, that lets you get root-level access to the phone without having to unlock its bootloader. An attacker would likely need physical access to your phone to do any damage, but that still means they could insert trackers or otherwise compromise your phone with very little effort.

The 5T is an upgraded version of this year's surprisingly affordable OnePlus 5, and it's set to go on sale in North America and Europe on November 21st.

OnePlus is collecting your private data without permission

OnePlus is mainly known as the little upstart that took on the big guns with the help of its solid, yet affordable, handsets. But, its in-house version of Android, dubbed OxygenOS, is once again threatening to dent its hard-fought for credibility. The problem lies with the company's approach to data-sharing, which is problematic (to say the least). As security researcher Chris Moore has repeatedly pointed out, the manufacturer's OxygenOS-based devices not only gather a ton of user data, but they also tie this info to individual devices, and user accounts in particular.

The OnePlus 5 got a whimsical French makeover

If you like your tech on the whimsical side, you'll probably be interested in OnePlus' latest collaboration with French designer Castelbajac. The partnership's line of "Callection" products includes a limited edition version of the OnePlus 5, complete with colorful hardware buttons and a handwriting-adorned back cover. The OnePlus 5 JCC+, which is otherwise identical to the regular OnePlus 5, is available as a 128GB variant and is on sale for the standard device price of £500 ($680). The phone will be available from a pop-up event in Paris on September 22, and online from October 2. But if that's a bit too spendy, you can still own a piece of the Callection with a limited edition T-shirt (£30/$40) or tote bag (£25/$35), or by downloading a Castelbajac smartphone wallpaper from the Callection website. Update: This article previously mistakenly stated a pop-up event was taking place in London, and has been edited accordingly.

A memory bug made the OnePlus 5 reboot during 911 calls

OnePlus fixed that nasty bug that rebooted your OnePlus 5 when you called an emergency number, but just what caused it, exactly? The company has offered an explanation... and it's a thorny issue. Apparently, there was a cellular modem memory usage problem that kicked in when you made an emergency call while on a voice over LTE network, invoking the OTDOA (Observed Time Difference of Arrival) protocol used for positioning in an emergency. It only occurred on some OnePlus 5 units, but it was tricky enough that the company worked with Qualcomm to eliminate the glitch on devices around the world.

Some of us here at Engadget can remember a time when cellphones on college campuses were strictly "for emergencies" (read: calls home to Mom and Dad). By now, of course, things have changed: Our handsets come with us everywhere, and most of us don't have to worry about pissing off our parents by exceeding our minutes allotment. We imagine many of today's college freshmen already have phones, but for those of you who've earned an upgrade, we crammed five into our back-to-school guide, including some budget options. Not in the market yet for a new phone? You might still want an external battery pack, a fast microSDXC card or, heaven forbid, a "selfie case," which is definitely a thing.

The OnePlus 5 has an update coming to fix its scary 911 reboot bug

If there's one thing your cellphone really needs to do, it's work in an emergency. A couple of days ago, however, one owner of the OnePlus 5 made two attempts to call 911 only to have his phone reboot both times. Other posters on Reddit observed the same error, which one commenter said came from an issue caused by using anything other than the stock Android dialer. Tonight, OnePlus issued the following statement: We have been in touch with the customer and have tested a software update that has resolved the issue. We will be rolling out the software update shortly.

Some OnePlus 5 owners can't dial 911 without the phone rebooting

Making an emergency phone call to 911 on your OnePlus 5 could wind up with your phone rebooting. A handful of owners have taken to Reddit to share videos of the glitch in action, and they suspect that it could have something to do with the phone's GPS system. For its part, OnePlus says it's contacted the customer and is looking into what could be the problem. Should your OnePlus be doing the same, the company asks that you contact its support inbox. It sounds like this might be fixable via firmware update -- unlike that whole "jelly scrolling" thing last month.

OnePlus 5's jelly scrolling possibly caused by upside-down screen

    06.30.2017

Some OnePlus 5 owners have reported encountering a strange "jelly-like" scrolling effect over the past few days since the phone was released. According to their posts on Reddit and other social networks, the text and images on their screen expand and shrink as they swipe in the opposite direction. The issue became big enough for the phonemaker to make a formal statement, wherein it said that the "subtle visual effect" when scrolling is totally natural. In other words, you can't expect a fix for it, since it's technically not a defect. But why does the OnePlus 5 exhibit the behavior in the first place? We might not get an answer out of OnePlus, but based on XDA Developers' investigation, it's because the device's screen was apparently mounted upside down.

Want a OnePlus 5 and couldn't swing by one of the pop-up stores to get it early? You now have your chance. As promised, OnePlus is selling its latest flagship starting at $479 (£449) for a base version with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, and $539 (£499) if you crave 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. Whichever version you choose, you're getting quite a lot of phone for the money. As we noted in our review, the OP5's speedy Snapdragon 835 chip and dual rear cameras help it punch above its weight class -- it's not the best phone, but it's a strong value.
