'Apex Legends' tweaks season seven battle pass after players complain
Despite all of the changes added to Apex Legends to launch season seven — new map, new character, vehicles and some major adjustments to existing characters — it was barely out of the door yesterday when the game’s biggest supporters started to turn against it, spurring a quick response. Like many other “free” games that are popular right now, EA’s battle royale shooter features a battle pass system where players can pay for a set of collectible items that unlock as they keep playing the game. For the new season, the game’s developers rolled out their biggest battle pass change since the game debuted a year and a half ago.

As expected, the juggernaut battle royale is introducing a new season based on the Marvel universe. If you buy the game’s new Battle Pass, you’ll be able to unlock iconic character skins such as Iron Man, Storm, Doctor Doom, Groot, Mystique and She-Hulk. All players will also be able to use super powers such as Doctor Doom’s Arcane Gauntlets, Groot’s Bramble Shield and Silver Surfer’s Board throughout each winner-takes-all match.
Valorant's Act II update adds a new battle pass and deathmatches
Riot Games has revealed what Valorant players can expect in Act II — the free-to-player shooter’s take on seasons — when it drops tomorrow (August 4th). The biggest addition is a new battle pass that gives owners a bunch of new cosmetics to unlock, including weapon skins and keychain-style ‘gun buddies,’ sprays, player titles and ‘player card’ artwork, and Radianite Points, a currency that can be spent on individual weapons to access even flashier skins and visual effects. Just like the previous battle pass, which launched on June 2nd with the game’s general release, it will cost 1,000 Valorant Points, a premium currency that can be bought for $9.99.

'Call of Duty: Modern Warfare' prepares for its first battle pass
Now that Call of Duty is officially in the post-loot box era, Activision and Infinity Ward have revealed what "season one" in Modern Warfare will bring players. As it's moved to a Battle Pass system, mimicking Fortnite and other shooters, developers are calling this "the biggest free content drop in Call of Duty history." Players who pay up for premium access will find out what the 100 tiers of Battle Pass rewards are next week when the season starts on December 3rd, but everything announced right now is available for free, although some of it will have to be earned through playing the game. New maps coming to the game include a few favorites from Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, like Crash, Vacant and Shipment. It's also expanding with three new gameplay modes, like a 2v2 gunfight where players have to find weapons and resources after the match starts, a single-life "Reinforce" mode with two teams competing to control three flags, and a new Infected survival game mode. Beyond that, there's a couple of new weapons and also some new Special Ops co-op missions on the way. Some of the content may drop later in the season, but everything's coming to all platforms at the same time -- check back next week for more information. Epic extends the current 'Fortnite' season to focus on holiday updates
The first season of Fortnite's Chapter 2 promises to be the longest-running one to date. Until now, seasons have lasted between two and three months, but the current one will run for almost four.
'Call of Duty: Modern Warfare' swaps loot boxes for a battle pass
Activision has confirmed its post-launch plans for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, and they're generous to say the least. All future maps and new modes will be released for free, there won't be any loot boxes or a season pass, and the game will feature crossplay across all platforms. It's a major departure from previous games in the series.
'Fortnite' Chapter 2 is here: New map, boats and 'less grind'
The wait is over: Epic Games made its fanbase stare at a black hole long enough, and has decided to end its cryptic blackout and give Fortnite a huge new update, which the company is calling Chapter 2. As expected, the battle royale shooter features a totally new map, a ton of new skins and a welcome makeover for the game's mechanics.
Leaked 'Fortnite' Chapter 2 trailer showcases a new map and boats
Fortnite is set to return from the void with a major overhaul, if a leaked trailer is anything to go by. The original, constantly evolving battle royale map was destroyed in spectacular fashion Sunday, leaving only a black hole for players to look at. As has been rumored, Fortnite Chapter 2 is set to debut an all-new map. It seems there are plenty of other fresh features in store, including boats, swimming and fishing. The trailer for Season 1 of Chapter 2, which is said to have been shared with Epic's permission, also showcases pogo sticks and the ability to carry downed teammates.
'Rainbow Six: Siege' adds a 'Fortnite' style Battle Pass
Ubisoft can't resist the siren's call of introducing Fortnite-like Battle Passes in Rainbow Six: Siege. On top of unveiling the details of Year 4's third season (more on that in a bit), the company has outlined plans for Battle Passes in its tactical shooter. The first phase will be a free "Mini Battle Pass" that has players earning Battle Points to unlock tiers and all-important rewards, such as a Harry Chibi charm if you complete the Pass. The real focus, of course, is the paid tier arriving in the fourth season.
'Dota Underlords' beta tests its first battle pass
In another sign of gaming trends folding in on each other, Valve's own 'Auto Chess' spin-off of Dota 2 is testing out a battle pass. The still-in-beta Dota Underlords is free to play, so like other "free" games, mixing in bonus packages that people will pay for without making them annoying or a waste of money is key. Epic has executed the strategy repeatedly with Fortnite and is already in season nine, while battle royale challenger Apex Legends caught flack for an underwhelming first "season" of offerings.
Futuristic 'Fortnite' Season 9 arrives with slipstreams and hover platforms
The volcano has erupted, and in its ashy wake Fortnite Season 9 is born -- and it looks decidedly futuristic. As players say goodbye to a successful Season 8, Epic has revealed what's in store for the game's next chapter, teasing it this week with the strapline, "The Future is..."
'Apex Legends' Battle Pass and new character Octane arrive tomorrow
Apex Legends has exploded in popularity since the battle royale game arrived last month, and EA and Respawn aren't wasting much time in making the first seasonal Battle Pass available. The Wild Frontier pass arrives March 19th for 950 Apex Coins ($9.50). If you buy it, you'll unlock three themed character skins immediately, for Lifeline, Wraith and Mirage. You can earn more than 100 additional rewards each time you level up, including weapon skins, banner frames and XP boosts.
'Fortnite' players can get the next Battle Pass for free
For the best part of a year, Fortnite has been king of the battle royale genre, both in terms of players and revenue. PUBG and Blackout have attempted to usurp the free-to-play shooter but Epic Games has successfully managed fend off its competition with the promise of addictive gameplay and regular updates. However, there's a new pretender to the throne. In the space of two weeks, Respawn's Apex Legends has amassed 25 million players and become streamers' battle royale of choice. Epic Games knows it has a fight on its hands and has begun employing the clever tactic of giving away stuff for free in order to keep its player base loyal.
