The Xbox One's original indie game is finally here
Patience. Below is a game steeped in time, from creation to consumption, and it demands patience from developers and players alike. Capybara Games revealed Below during the Xbox E3 conference in 2013, suggesting this beautiful, dark and expansive adventure game would be out soon. So, fans waited. And waited. Another trailer dropped, showing a tiny character fighting its way through massive dungeons filled with supernatural secrets, but no release date appeared. Fans waited some more.
Indie roguelike 'Below' has a release date: December 14th
More than five years after its original reveal, Capybara Games is ready to deliver Below, a much-anticipated indie title. Engadget spoke to co-founder Nathan Vella a few months ago about the stresses of running a successful small game studio working on such a complex game. At the time, he said that: "Fear of letting people down, and the kind of trust that people have put in us, are the two biggest motivating factors." Below throws gamers into procedurally-generated dungeons with a shield and weapon, and keeps the pressure up with permadeath. In a 2016 interview, creative director Kris Piotrowski said "The answer to 'What lies below?' is the main thing we're holding back." Now, the game is ready to ship on Xbox One and Steam, with a brief preview trailer teasing the adventures players have ahead of them.
‘Steven Universe’ and ‘OK K.O.!’ are coming to Nintendo Switch
Cartoon Network and Outright Games will release a boxed set bundling both Steven Universe: Save the Light and OK K.O.! Let's Play Heroes to the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One for $40 on October 30th. Currently available as digital downloads on the latter two consoles, this will be the first time the games are on the Switch. They'll also launch as standalone titles for Nintendo's eShop on October 30th.
The unique stress of running a successful indie studio
It's a big year for Capybara Games. Below is actually coming out, five years after its announcement and three years after its original promised release date, but that's only the half of it. "I'm just starting to come to the realization of what's left in 2018," Capy co-founder Nathan Vella says. "We're only halfway through and I'm like, 'Aww, I've gotta fit everything into the last half?'" Capy is working on two other games while it prepares Below for launch, which is a beast of a project unto itself. The team plans on announcing the new games around August. "I believe pretty strongly in waiting for the right time," Vella says. "As proven by a game that's, like, three years late."
'Below' is going to come out this year, seriously
Capybara Games announced Below during Microsoft's 2013 E3 conference, sandwiched between details about the Xbox One, which would hit retail later that year. When it launched, Below was going to be console-exclusive to the Xbox One for an unspecified amount of time, and it immediately captured the imagination of fans and press. It was a visually powerful game, showcasing a tiny protagonist who explored caverns that stretched for miles beyond the screen, hiding mysteries and adventure around every corner. Below served as a testament to Microsoft's commitment to being a hub for innovative games, regardless of whether they were created by mainstream studios or independent developers.
‘OK K.O.’ is a brilliant cartoon with a game to match
With his small, boxy stature and pin-thin legs, K.O. doesn't look like much of a superhero. But that's the whole point of OK K.O.! Let's Be Heroes, an animated series from Cartoon Network. The titular character is a powerhouse-in-training, full of naive wonder and a hunger to pummel bad guys. He works in a convenience store run by Mr. Gar, one of the world's greatest superheroes, alongside fellow rookies Radicles and Enid. Together they battle the mischievous robots sent from a factory called Boxmore across the road, learning about friendship and hard work along the way.
Let Sony's favorite developers help pick your next game (updated)
Four years on and the PlayStation 4's digital storefront is pretty well stocked. But finding more obscure stuff to buy isn't the easiest and the search function kind of sucks. As a way of addressing that on the store's web version, Sony is introducing curated lists of games from "the industry's most creative minds," dubbed The Creators. PlayStation's head of worldwide studios Shuhei Yoshida has his picks listed, as does Rocket League studio Psyonix, Street Fighter's Yoshinori Ono and the Final Fantasy XV team among many, many others.
Capy is making a game for Cartoon Network's new show
If the words "multimedia tie-in" bring back memories of bad video game adaptations and lame comic books pushed by marketing groups to promote feature films, then clearly the 80s and 90s have scarred you too. Cartoon Network's upcoming animated series OK K.O.! Let's Be Heroes is getting its own game, which would seem gimmicky if not for the the studio they brought on to make the show's companion: Capybara Games, creators of the acclaimed Superbrothers: Sword and Sworcery and Super Time Force. The game, an "action brawler with RPG elements," will come out this fall.
Beautiful indie game 'Below' is delayed once again
If you're eager to play Super Time Force developer Capybara Games' latest title, Below, you're going to have to wait a bit longer. The atmospheric and ethereal indie game has been delayed once again, this time with no new release date. Below was originally supposed to come out this summer for Xbox One and PC, but Capy needs a little more time to make sure it meets the studio's high standards.
'Don't Starve: Shipwrecked' lands on your PS4 this spring
If you're thoroughly hooked on Don't Starve but don't want to retreat to your PC to play Shipwrecked, we have good news. Klei and Capybara have announced that Shipwrecked will be available on the PlayStation 4 sometime this spring. There's no mention of any big changes for this console release (we wouldn't expect any), but that's fine -- the real emphasis here is on adapting Don't Starve's quirky survival gameplay to a world full of tropical islands and horrible sea monsters. And if you need to get your fix on the road, be patient. Klei's Corey Rollins says his studio is "looking in to" the possibility of a PlayStation Vita port for Shipwrecked, so you might have a portable option in the future.
'Don't Starve: Shipwrecked' washes ashore on Steam
Don't Starve: Shipwrecked, the nautical themed expansion for one of our favorite survival games is finally out of Early Access on Steam and ready for your consumption. If you'll remember, this add-on is the result of a partnership between original developer Klei Entertainment and the folks behind Below and Super Time Force, Capybara Games. The single-player expansion (the co-op focused Don't Starve Together released last year) introduces plenty of new deadly goodies like sailing, seasons and crafting recipes -- all incredibly likely to put your ability to follow the game's name to the test. As an incentive to give it the old college try, Steam has the game on sale for $4.50 during its launch period.
'Below' is hiding more mysteries than you think
Capybara Games made a classic mistake in the middle of developing its latest game: announcing the release date too early. Capy unveiled Below, a moody and mysterious exploration experience, back in 2013. A year later, the team revealed plans to release it in 2015 on Xbox One and PC. And then, 2015 came and went. "Microsoft gave us a really good opportunity to show it for the first time a long time ago," Capy Creative Director Kris Piotrowski explained during GDC this week. "Then we went home and kind of realized the game was like 100 times bigger and more complex than we anticipated."
Survive underground in Capy's 'Below' this summer
After almost three years we finally have a better idea when developer Capybara Games' Below will finally release: this summer. Other details on the procedurally generated, subterranean survival game are still scarce, but hey, there's an ominous new trailer and screenshots just, ahem, below.
'Super Time Force Ultra' comes to PS4 and PS Vita on September 1st
Super Time Force is one of the more mind-bending indie games to break cover in recent years, and now the time-traveling, side-scrolling shooter is coming to the PlayStation 4 and PS Vita. As of September 1st, the game will be live in the PlayStation Store -- and it'll be free for anyone who subscribes to PlayStation Plus. How much it'll cost for those who don't subscribe to PS Plus has yet to be revealed, however.
