After several months without a proper Direct, Nintendo at long last debuted a presentation without any prior warning. For some reason, it decided to call it a "Nintendo Direct Mini," which is especially strange given the glut of news it delivered.
'Super Smash Bros. Ultimate' is the best selling fighting game in US history
November is always a big month for videogame sales, and just ahead of tonight's Game Awards, the NPD has dropped off some sales stats for the US. The most notable part that we saw is the news that "Super Smash Bros Ultimate is now the best-selling Fighting game in U.S. history." It has dethroned the 2008 Wii title Super Smash Bros. Brawl in lifetime dollar sales. This new title arrived quickly after Nintendo announced in November that SSBU is the best-selling fighting game worldwide, with more than 15.71 million copies sold compared to Street Fighter II's 15.5 million. It's no surprise then, that Nintendo plans even more fighters for its hit game, even as it rests at number two in sales this year topped only by Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. The shooter is also number one for November and the last twelve months overall, with Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order coming in at number two for the month. Hardware sales dropped by 26 percent from last year as a new console generation approaches, but the Switch is still the best seller. In accessories, the best-selling item (by dollar sales) is the new Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2.
Dragon Quest XI's hero comes to 'Super Smash Bros. Ultimate' this summer
Nintendo's E3 Direct opened up with one of the bigger announcements fans were waiting for: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC. This time around, it's a crossover with Dragon Quest XI, with that game's unnamed main character joining the roster of fighters. He's the second DLC character to arrive in SSBU following Joker from Persona 5. Meanwhile, Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age: Definitive Edition is coming to Switch later this year. Nintendo adds a Labo VR view to 'Super Smash Bros. Ultimate' (updated)
It looks like you'll soon be able to beat up your friends in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate from an entirely different perspective. It seems the hit Switch fighting game is getting a virtual reality mode via the Labo Toy-Con VR Goggles, according to a Twitter bot for SSBU patch notes (which has a track record of revealing them around 12 hours before Nintendo does).

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is getting a single-player mode, and the latest Nintendo Direct offered a first glimpse on what to expect when the game launches on December 7th. Nintendo is calling it Adventure Mode: World of Light, and promises that it's "more about fun than story."
'Super Smash Bros. Ultimate' is a refinement of a classic formula
It's December 1999. I'm sitting in my best friend's smoke-filled bedroom, frantically mashing the buttons of an N64 controller and having the time of my life. Six months later, I'm in the same smokey hovel, but now I'm deftly dodging attacks, timing blocks and dancing between the platforms of Planet Zebes. And I'm still having the time of my life. This has been the core appeal of the Super Smash Bros. (SSB) series since day one: No matter your skill level or play style, get together with a bunch of friends, and you're going to have a lot of fun. Put in the time to master the game, though, and you'll find a rewarding and deep fighter. Fast-forward the best part of two decades, and at E3 2018, Nintendo has taken the wraps off its latest SSB game, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. A large portion of Nintendo's Direct presentation, and indeed its cavernous E3 booth, was dedicated to the brawler, which is due for release on the Switch December 7th.
