AT&T will launch mobile 5G in Atlanta, Dallas and Waco
AT&T is finally willing to say exactly where you'll see mobile 5G in 2018. The carrier has confirmed that "parts" of Atlanta, Waco and its home turf of Dallas will adopt the standards-based service when it goes live before the end of the year. It'll name the remaining nine cities "in the coming months." There's no mention of the first devices (many of those will have to wait until 2019), but it's clear that this will be a cautious first step into the future rather than a full-on leap.
Visualized: classic biplane gets a glass cockpit
Waco's YMF-5D biplane may look like an authentically vintage aircraft from the outside, but it's an entirely different story once you strap yourself into the pilot's seat. The plane is available with a number of different "glass cockpit" options, including the top of the line model pictured above that's outfitted with a whole slew of Garmin aviation gear and other 21st century niceties. Of course, that doesn't exactly come cheap - all told, the full glass configuration runs just over $99,000, or over $500,000 including the plane itself (you can see what it looks like after the break).
Waco, Texas launches WCCC-TV government access HD channel
Here's an interesting one. The city of Waco, Texas has just launched its very own all-digital HD channel for government access use. WCCC-TV (Waco City Cable Channel) is thought to be the first of its kind in Texas, and it can currently be viewed on Grande channel 410. Since earlier this year, the staff at the station has been "creating all new programming and numerous short segments about Waco, its people and government all in 1080p HD." Of note, the HD channel was completely funded by two cable operators (TWC and Grande, we presume) and not a dime of city tax funds were required to pay for the new studios or equipment. Nice touch!
Time Warner Cable adds FOX News HD, MGM HD in Austin / Waco, TX
Time Warner Cable subscribers in Austin / Waco, Texas have long complained about getting the proverbial shaft on HD channels, and if you take a gander at lineups in the other major cities in the Lone Star state, it's easy to see the root of their frustrations. That being said, we can tell you that a lowly twosome is headed down the pike, with FOX News HD available right now and MGM HD coming on December 1st. Unfortunately, MGM is essentially replacing the soon-to-vanish MOJO HD, so you're left with a net gain of one. Sad, we know. [Disclosure: Engadget is part of the Time Warner family][Thanks, Chad]
DISH Network expands MPEG-4 delivery, adds HD locals in six markets
Just a few short days after DISH Network transitioned 11 of its East Coast markets to MPEG-4, in comes word that it has added 21 more (all classified as "East Coast") to bump the grand total to 52 regions. In somewhat related news, we've also learned that six more DMAs can look forward to HD locals today. In no particular order, we've got Columbia-Jefferson City, Missouri; Des Moines-Ames, Iowa; Lincoln and Hastings-Kearney, Nebraska; Omaha, Nebraska; Quincy-Hannibal-Keokuk, Illinois; and Waco-Temple-Bryan, Texas joining the fray. Time Warner Cable adding a trio of HD channels in Waco / Austin, TX
Time Warner Cable just finished adding 11 high-def stations to the EPG in Irving / Las Colinas, Texas, but it seems to only be able to add channels in Waco / Austin in threes. Case in point: late last month, said region picked up a new trio, and now, we're hearing that a new trifecta is headed in starting July 17th. Curious for details? How's about Biography HD, Hallmark Movie Channel HD and Travel Channel HD. Sure, anything is better than nothing, but we have a sneaking suspicion that locals won't take too kindly to TWC choosing these three out of all the possibilities. Are we right, or are we right? Fox News Central Texas debuts tonight, HD coming soon
Shortly after hearing that Central Texas would be getting a helping of new HD channels later this month, we've now learned that KWKT-TV (a local FOX affiliate) will begin airing its own newscast tonight. Debuting on the same day as the 2008 State of the Union address, Fox News Central Texas will get its first show underway this evening at 9:30PM local time, but will move to 9:00PM going forward. Tonight's show will mark the station's first foray into local news since it began broadcasting in 1988, and while it won't yet be shown in high-definition, the entire newsroom is already HD-capable. So, what's the holdup, you ask? Just a digital switcher, which is "presently on order."
Time Warner Cable adding more HD in Central Texas
Now that U-verse is rolling into town, Time Warner Cable is looking to give current customers a few more reasons to stick around. According to a sidebar at News 8 Austin's website, the provider will be kicking out seven new additions on January 31st across Central Texas. More specifically, users in the area can expect to see National Geographic HD, The Movie Channel HD, Versus / Golf HD, Fox Business News HD, History Channel HD, Lifetime Movie Network HD and Weather Channel HD tossed in at month's end, and while Austin-area residents will see these slotted in the 1,600s, Waco, Temple and Killeen-area subscribers will need to look in the 1,000s. DirecTV adds NBC & CBS HD for Waco customers
Just in case you thought they were focusing only on national HDTV channels, DirecTV recently announced it's adding local channels in Texas. Waco-area customers don't need bunny ears to get KCEN/NBC and KWTX/CBS in 1080i anymore. DirecTV's up to 67 markets with HD locals, provided customers have the right equipment.
