Square Enix will debut the next Life is Strange game on March 18th
On March 18th, the company plans to devote 40 minutes starting at 1 PM ET to its upcoming slate of games.
'Life is Strange 2' and the reality of gun violence in games
Life is Strange 2 deals with a litany of heavy themes, covering everything from police violence and immigration in the United States, to racism and family bonds. French studio Dontnod handles each subject with care, respect and research, consulting with people who have lived through situations that the game's main characters, Sean and Daniel, encounter. However, there's an extra, unintentional topic humming beneath the five-part series: gun violence. Throughout Life is Strange 2, moments of high drama often culminate in scenes involving guns, asking players to make quick decisions at the threat of being blown away -- or, pulling the trigger themselves.
'Life is Strange' dev's upcoming game centers on twins and trans identity
Dontnod Entertainment has more than Twin Mirror on its slate for next year. At X019, Xbox Games Studios announced the Life is Strange developer is working on another narrative adventure title for 2020 called Tell Me Why. You'll play as twins Tyler and Alyson Ronan, who try to untangle their childhood memories while a mystery plays out in small-town Alaska.
'Twin Mirror' will be a one-year Epic Games Store exclusive
A year after revealing Twin Mirror at E3 2018, Dontnod Entertainment said it's delaying the first of the psychological thriller's three episodes until 2020. It was previously slated to arrive sometime this year.
'Twin Mirror' gameplay trailer enters DontNod's episodic mind palace
Fight Club meets Memento in Dontnod Entertainment's (Life is Strange, Vampyr, Remember Me) gameplay reveal for the episodic game Twin Mirror. In this game, players play as Sam, a man returning to his West Virginia hometown to attend his best friend's funeral. But his alter ego, a snarkier more annoying version of himself, will be following him throughout.
The importance of sitting in 'Life is Strange 2'
Where is dad? The question rings in my head. I'm roughly 15 minutes into the first episode of Life is Strange 2 and I've just realized the real stakes at play for the two main characters, Daniel and Sean Diaz. Daniel is 9 and Sean is 16, and the two brothers are wandering alongside an empty highway on the Pacific Northwest coast, dense trees to their right and asphalt to their left. Their clothes and faces are dusted in dirt. This article contains spoilers for the first episode of Life is Strange 2
'Life is Strange 2' deals with brotherhood in the face of death
Life is Strange 2 begins with a bleak bang. Developer Dontnod shared the game's first 20 minutes this week on YouTube, introducing series fans to the Diaz family before diving straight into a chaotic, violent scene that sets the stage for the rest of the five-episode season. This article contains spoilers for the first 20 minutes of Life is Strange 2
'Life is Strange 2' trailer follows two young brothers on the run
The studio Dontnod Entertainment previously revealed that the sequel to its highly-acclaimed adventure game Life is Strange would debut with its first chapter on September 27th, 2018. But aside from some intriguing teaser footage, we didn't know what much about the game. Get ready, fans: An official trailer has dropped, and we've got a new pair of protagonists to follow and root for.
A 'Vampyr' TV show is on the way
If you're looking for a new supernatural television series, you're in luck (if you don't mind waiting a while). Fox 21 Television Studios will produce a new show based on the video game Vampyr by the developer of Life is Strange, Dontnod. The title came out for Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on June 5th.
'Life is Strange 2' teaser hints at dangerous powers
Now that Dontnod has set up some of the framework for Life is Strange 2 with The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit, it's ready to tease a bit of the game itself... and clearly, something's amiss. The brief clip shows a police officer responding to a "10-10" (fight in progress), only for someone or something to blast him backward with a mysterious power. It's not completely clear that this is connected to what we saw in Captain Spirit, but it's safe to say there isn't much of a link to the first game -- Dontnod has stressed that there's a new location and new characters. Still, that won't stop the endless speculation ahead of the full reveal at Gamescom on August 20th.
'Life is Strange 2' prelude proves superpowers aren't just for girls
In The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit, the latest installment in the Life is Strange series, developer Dontnod once again taps into a deep and pervasive human emotion: The desire to have superpowers. However, where the first season approaches this feeling from the perspective of a confused teenage girl with the fate of an entire town in her hands, Captain Spirit puts players in the basketball-spotted socks of a 9-year-old boy playing pretend. Though the protagonist, Chris, is younger than the star of the original series, his problems are just as mature: His mother recently died in a car wreck, and in the aftermath, his dad is having a rough time creating a stable home life. Meanwhile, Chris attempts to escape his new reality by becoming the superpowered Captain Spirit -- in his imagination and possibly in the real world, too.
First episode of ‘Life is Strange 2’ debuts September 27th
A month ago, studio Dontnod revealed that its graphic adventure game Life Is Strange had sold 3 million copies -- and a sequel was on the way. Apparently it was pretty far along when they made the announcement. The first episode of Life Is Strange 2 is coming out on September 27th, with four more to follow.
Watch Square Enix's E3 keynote right here at 1 PM Eastern
How do you catch the news as it happens from Square Enix's E3 media briefing if you aren't in LA? You watch along with the publisher's livestream embedded below starting at 1PM Eastern, naturally. In a few minutes we'll (hopefully) find out more about Dontnod's next Life is Strange tale (above), Kingdom Hearts III and maybe an update about that Final Fantasy VII remake. Perhaps a few Marvel superheroes will show up as well? It's E3 week after all -- anything can happen.
'Life is Strange' returns with 'The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit'
The next Life is Strange is all about childhood. Following the original series and Before the Storm -- both of which dealt with the challenges of adolescence -- developer Dontnod is tackling a younger character with a big imagination. The game is called The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit, and will launch for free (yes, free!) on June 26th. It was announced at Microsoft's E3 press conference, however it's safe to assume that the title will be available on other platforms, like previous entries. Dontnod calls it a game in the Life is Strange "universe," so who knows, maybe it will have ties to Max and Chloe? The studio has confirmed, at least, that the adventure is separate from the previously announced Life is Strange 2...
Makers of ‘Life Is Strange’ announce psychological thriller ‘Twin Mirror’
Studio Dontnod came back from its embattled game Remember Me with 2015's Life Is Strange, a critical darling lauded for its rich characters and themes. Last week, the developer released the very different Vampyr, a WWI-era science-meets-supernatural game. Dontnod's next project is a step back to our world (or so we assume) with Twin Mirror, a psychological thriller published by Bandai Namco that's headed to modern platforms next year.
'Life is Strange' comes to iPhone and iPad December 14th
If you haven't had the chance to play 2014's Life is Strange or its recent sequel Before the Storm, now's your chance. The brilliant episodic narrative game revolves around teenaged Max and her ability to rewind time, returning to her hometown only to find it and her previous best friend Chloe in very different straits. Beginning December 14th, a whole new audience will be able to experience their story on iPhone and iPad.
How 'Life is Strange' landed in Deck Nine's hands
Idol Minds had been making video games for 20 years when it rebranded as Deck Nine in May. It's not just the studio's name that changed -- its entire mission refocused. Instead of working on titles like Cool Boarders 2001 and Pain, developers built a suite of storytelling tools ideal for crafting narrative-driven games. Deck Nine hired experienced writers and shopped itself around to major publishers, offering to take on emotionally complex projects with branching dialogue paths. Game director Chris Floyd didn't expect much to come of these early meetings. "And it was Square [Enix] that came back to us and said, 'What do you think about making the next game in the Life is Strange franchise?'" Floyd said. As fans of the series, developers were floored. And they were in.
'Vampyr' is more about who you kill than how you do it
Developer Dontnod has taken a sharp turn from its previous games Life Is Strange and Remember Me with Vampyr, but there's more to think about than just another angle on gender politics. We stopped by the booth and got a guided tour throughout a few sections of the game that showed us more about how combat works and what kind of choices your character will have to make. Going beyond mere moody lurking in the shadows, we watched the player's character, Dr. Jonathan Reed, struggle between his role as a doctor in Spanish flu-stricken 1918 London and the reality of being a recently turned vampire who kills humans to survive.
'Life is Strange: Before the Storm' arrives August 31st
Life is Strange was an episodic hit across multiple platforms, and today during Microsoft's E3 2017 press conference we got a first look at its follow-up: Life is Strange: Before the Storm. This prequel is set three years before the original game and deals with the period when Max left Chloe and, (spoiler alert?) Rachel is there. The first of three episodes will debut August 31st, and since it wasn't announced as a console exclusive, we're guessing it will be available on more than just Xbox. Also, this game is not the sequel currently under development by Dontnod (along with Vampyr, and it's not here at E3), and is being handled by another team, Deck Nine.
