Apple is keeping WWDC free and online-only for 2021
For the second year in a row, Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference will be completely virtual. The company announced today that the online show will take place between June 7th and 11th — just like last year — and that it will once again be free to all registered developers. “We are working to make WWDC21 our biggest and best yet, and are excited to offer Apple developers new tools to support them as they create apps that change the way we live, work, and play," said Susan Prescott, Apple’s VP of Worldwide Developer Relations.

Gamescom cancels its in-person event due to COVID-19
Gamescom announced today that it won’t host its annual in-person event in Cologne, Germany this year. The Gamescom team is planning a digital version of the conference, so gamers and exhibitors still have something to look forward to. Gamescom previously said existing digital formats, like its Opening Night Live stream, scheduled for August 24th, will be “significantly expanded.”

Apple adds system-wide dark mode for iOS 13
As expected, Apple's newest mobile operating system, iOS 13, will include a system-wide dark mode. The company announced the change at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) today. While the feature has been circulating through the rumor mill for months, it's still one of the most notable changes to come out of this year's conference.
Apple's WWDC keynote is set for June 3rd
Apple has set the dates for this year's Worldwide Developers Conference. It takes place June 3rd to 7th at San Jose's McEnery Convention Center, the same venue as the last couple of years. At WWDC, Apple typically gives developers (and everyone else) an early look at upcoming versions of iOS, macOS, watchOS and tvOS. We might also learn a little more about Apple's services (it's likely to announce streaming video and news subscription plans this month) or even get a glimpse at new hardware.

Unity sponsors 50 developers affected by Trump's travel ban
On top of all the other obstacles they face, many game developers from nations like Iran, Iraq and Syria couldn't make it to GDC in San Francisco because of the Trump administration's immigration order. Unity is trying to make it up to them in a small way with a new program called Unity Without Borders. It's inviting 50 developers from the restricted countries (Iraq is now off that list) to its Unite 2017 conference in Amsterdam.
Twitter's Flight developer conference was scrapped this year
For the past two years, Twitter has put on a big show called Flight to dazzle mobile app makers with new tools and highlight new shifts in strategy. This year, though, Flight is grounded. Twitter confirmed in a statement to Recode that instead of the usual big fete, the company plans to host smaller, more intimate events around the country -- all the better to improve the Twitter's dicey ties with developers.
Google now lets you join Hangouts as a guest, no account needed
The worst thing about organizing an online meeting is squabbling over platform. Should you choose WebEx? Skype? Google? Your decision just got a little easier. As of today, you no longer need to have a Google account to join a meeting Hosted on Hangouts -- just a link.
Security conference effectively bans booth babes from its show floor
The issue of booth babes -- scantily clad people attempting to lure unsuspecting buyers towards second-rate products -- has once again reared its head within the industry. This time out, cryptography and information security gathering RSA has effectively banned them, mandating that all attendees will wear clothing that's appropriate for a professional environment. According to a statement released to TechTarget, people will be unable to display "excessive cleavage," and won't be able to wear tank tops, tube tops, miniskirts or minidresses. RSA go on to say that any scantily dressed people found on the show floor would be asked to put on a sweater or leave.
Aces Conference coming next year
Former TUAW contributor Justin Esgar is launching Aces Conference in New Orleans next year, and it's designed to help you build your consulting business. Justin is an ace when it comes to building businesses, particularly consulting, and has been a Mac IT guy for many years. He branched out with SignMyPad, an app for signing PDF documents, and has since launched several other apps, given talks at MacTech and launched an emergency backup email service for Kerio Connect users. We're live at IFA 2014 in Berlin!
It's the first week of September, which means we're getting ready to attend the annual IFA trade show in Berlin. IFA is a difficult show to describe: While it's becoming a huge launchpad for smartphones, tablets and smartwatches, it's also traditionally been a place for companies to exhibit their latest fridges, microwaves and vacuum cleaners (most of them equipped with smart capabilities, at least). Whether you're into the latest tech or just looking for a new blender, there's plenty to see here -- though you'll forgive us if we glaze over news about upcoming sewing machines, instead focusing on Galaxy Notes, Xperia tablets, Android Wear watches and other consumer electronics. We'll be liveblogging announcements from Samsung and Sony, so stay tuned for those; and keep this page bookmarked to see everything we announce from the show.
GaymerX conference to return as GX3: Everyone Games
GaymerX, the gaming convention that seeks to "create a safe space for all gamers, especially gamers who are queer, women, and people of color," will return, and the event's organizers could use your help in funding the show. Earlier this year, it was announced that GaymerX2, the second iteration of the conference, would mark the event's final appearance due to the costs of operating a show of that size in San Francisco. However, following that announcement, the organizers were inundated by support from developers who want to see GaymerX continue. "We are thrilled and humbled by the amount of support we've gotten since taking our financial difficulties public," said GaymerX CEO Matt Conn. "With amazing devs and publishers willing to put their money up to help save the concept of an awesome safe space for queer geeks and their friends, it means the world that we're able to potentially continue this convention." Now, the organizers are planning a third GaymerX convention, scheduled for August 11-13, 2015. In lieu of calling it GaymerX3, the event is now dubbed "GX3: Everyone Games" to reflect the shift in attendance from strictly members of the LGBTQ community to their supporters and any number of other marginalized groups in gaming. If you'd like to help the event go off without a hitch, the organizers are currently attempting to raise $80,000 - 60 percent of the show's operating costs - via Kickstarter. [Image: GaymerX]
Join Joystiq at GaymerX2 this weekend
What are you doing this weekend? If you have some spare time and live around San Francisco, you're invited to hang out with Joystiq Editor-in-chief Ludwig Kietzmann and Managing Editor Susan Arendt at GaymerX2! Our dashing managerial duo is hosting and speaking on a panel called "Yes, and? An improvised approach to inclusion," which introduces a classic improv technique as a way to better communicate about difficult subjects within our existing social structures. As comedy writer and actress Tina Fey breaks down in Bossypants, saying "yes, and" is a trick to make sure an improv scene doesn't fall flat. First, you have to accept the given situation – say "yes" – and second, you have to add to it, or the conversation stalls out. For our purposes, if someone says an aspect of a game or story makes them uncomfortable, we don't need to debate that feeling – we can say yes, and then add our own perspectives to the conversation. GaymerX2 takes over the InterContinental Hotel in San Francisco from July 11 - 13 – this Friday, Saturday and Sunday. GaymerX2 has a host of guests and panels lined up, including appearances by WWE star Darren Young, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian and BioWare writer David Gaider (who'll be joining Ludwig and Susan). Google's two-day I/O ticket lottery starts on April 8th
In 2012, all of the tickets for Google's I/O developer conference sold out in under 30 minutes. Last year? It took about 49 minutes. Don't worry about waking up early to register this year, though: the folks in Mountain View are running a lottery instead. Google will take applications for I/O tickets from April 8 to 10, and will randomly reach out to lucky applicants not long after that. Honestly though, your odds of nabbing a ticket are still dicey - the event usually plays host to about 5,500 developers, and demand for admission is through the roof... thanks in part to all the hardware swag Google gives out. If you have neither the time nor the spare dough to schlep out to San Francisco this summer, expect Google to stream its announcements and developer sessions on YouTube too.
GDC 2014: A video interview with Elite: Dangerous' David Braben
GDC 2014 in San Francisco is a great time to catch developers and ask them burning questions about their games. And that's exactly what one fan of Elite: Dangerous did, sitting down with Frontier Developments' CEO David Braben for a long chat about the upcoming MMO edition to the Elite franchise. The nearly 25-minute video interview includes information about the game, Braben's history in the gaming business, and footage of the interviewer playing the game using an Oculus Rift. Braben revealed that "the original Elite was never conceived initially, in [his] opinion, as a space game." Instead, it was all about the freedom, being an open world. How did it come to be in space then? According to Braben, that setting was ultimately chosen because "it was easier to render." Hear more of his thoughts in the video below.
