Ford's connected cars can now tell you if they're being broken into
Ford's connected security system is rolling out to all cars via the FordPass smartphone app.
Mustang Mach E pre-delivery app lets you set up the car before it arrives
Ford has unveiled a new app feature for its upcoming Mustang Mach-E that will save you the hassle of setting up navigation, climate control, charging stations and other personal settings once it’s delivered.
Ford hopes you'll trade some privacy for discounted car insurance
Ford thinks it has a way to make car insurance more appealing: taking advantage of the data available from connected cars. It's teaming up with Nationwide to introduce its own take on usage-based insurance. If you have one of several 2020 Ford or Lincoln models (like the Mustang you see above), you can sign up for a policy that uses the vehicle's built-in modem to track your driving habits and adjust your rates accordingly with each renewal. The technology tracks distance, your aggressiveness with pedals, idle time and night driving. You'll get a better deal if you're a gentle commuter than a foot-to-the-floor enthusiast, in other words.
Ford teams up with charging companies to form the FordPass Network
Ford is hoping to convince fence sitters to finally get an electric vehicle by making it easier to find charging stations. The automaker has introduced the FordPass Charging Network, which it says includes 12,000 charging stations with more than 35,000 plugs in North America. Customers who buy its upcoming EVs, presumably including its Mustang-inspired electric SUV, will get two years of free access to the network from the time they buy and activate their FordPass account for the vehicle.* They'll still have to pay to charge their EVs, though, which they can do through the FordPass app or their vehicle's screen, where they'll also be able to find the nearest charging stations.
Ford's remote car starting and unlocking are available for free
Until now, all of FordPass' connected car features have technically been locked behind a subscription, no matter how basic -- while it was effectively free with up to five years of 'trial' service, there was still the prospect of losing remote unlocking simply because you didn't want to pay up. Now, however, you won't even have to think about it. Ford has scrapped trial subscriptions and made the most common features available for free. You can unlock your doors, start up the motor or schedule a maintenance visit so long as your vehicle supports FordPass Connect in the first place.
Amazon will deliver packages to the trunk of your Ford or Lincoln
Apparently having packages shipped directly to your door in two days or less -- even placed inside your garage -- is not enough. Last year, Amazon began delivering packages to newer GM and Volvo cars. Now, the company will chase down even more vehicles. Ford announced today that select Ford and Lincoln vehicles are now eligible for Key by Amazon In-Car delivery, meaning Amazon will track you down and deliver your package wherever you've parked.
Ford's app lets you find and pay for garage parking
Ford is making some canny moves to get its brand in front of the public, even for folks who don't own one of its cars. Its latest update to the FordPass app lets your reserve a parking spot in garages at over 160 US cities. You just enter a destination and the time you need to park, and can view available spots and pricing on a map in real time from the eight garages Ford has partnered with. You can then reserve and pay for a spot using FordPay, a service that lets you store your credit and debit cards.
Ford service helps you get around town, whatever you drive
Ford's traditional business has revolved around making cars, but it's increasingly seeing itself as a transportation company that just happens to make vehicles. Need proof? Just look at the company's newly unveiled FordPass. The free-to-start service is built to help you get around town, whether or not you own a Ford -- it'll help you find and pay for parking, share cars and (in the future) book ridesharing trips. There's a FordPay virtual wallet that will help you pay for everything, and you'll even have access to free FordGuides (basically, customer service agents) that can help out.
