Wipeout might be one of the most ill-suited games for virtual reality, featuring high-speed races with brilliant flashing lights and neon streaks -- but it's coming to PlayStation VR anyway. Wipeout Omega Collection will get a free VR mode in early 2018, Sony announced during tonight's PlayStation Experience pre-show. The VR update includes all modes and tracks in the base game, 3D audio support, plus exclusive ships and interiors. Puke bags are not included.

The Flame in the Flood's distinctive approach to wilderness survival gaming was well-received when it reached PCs and the Xbox One earlier this year, so it's only natural that the game come to PlayStation gamers, right? Right. The Molasses Flood and Curve Digital have revealed that the game will reach the PS4 sometime in January. The dystopic title will arrive with a director's commentary offering a peek into the creative process, a "host of gameplay enhancements" and PS4-specific perks like avatars and a dynamic theme. More info about the updated mechanics should come soon.

Have you been suffering from Wipeout withdrawal symptoms since getting a PS4? You can relax. Sony has revealed that Wipeout Omega Collection is coming to the PS4 with remastered versions of three games (or two, depending on your point of view): Wipeout HD, Wipeout HD Fury and Wipeout 2048. It's not saying a whole lot about what's new, but it's safe to say that a graphical upgrade is on order -- especially for 2048, which was meant for the PS Vita. They're all getting 4K support, high dynamic range graphics and a "targeted" performance of 60 frames per second. You should see an "all-new" soundtrack, too. It's not a true sequel, and you'll have to wait until summer 2017 to get it, but it should at least end a years-long drought for people who have fond memories of racing hoverships to a thumping beat.

With Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare just now landing and Modern Warfare: Remastered reminding FPS fans of the franchise's glory days, Sony is ready to celebrate the Call of Duty New Year. It's that time of year when CoD players get their hands on a new game, start leveling up their weapon kits again and getting ready for the next round of Call of Duty World League. As they did with last year's release of Black Ops III, PlayStation will be kicking off the new season with an invitational tournament and some big announcements about what's in store for one of the biggest games in eSports.

EVE: Valkyrie might have started life as an Oculus Rift tech demo, but this month the space-shooter will arrive on Steam for HTC Vive owners. The exact release date is coming "soon," according to developer CCP Games. "We've also got some big celebrations planned for that weekend; all pilots on all platforms are invited," the blog post teases. Oh, and there's an announcement of some kind coming during the PlayStation Experience keynote this December 4th. Intriguing.

The PlayStation Experience event in San Francisco this weekend is one of the biggest opportunities to date for the public to check out PlayStation VR -- more than a dozen titles are on display here, including titles from Sony, Harmonix, Capcom and more. Unfortunately, it hasn't been easy for those at the show to actually try those games out. Attendees were able to sign up ahead of time and reserve a slot to try the PlayStation VR experience, but a glitch in Sony's database erased all those reservations, leaving a bunch of excited fans figuratively out in the cold.

Square Enix teased a remastered, PlayStation 4 version of Final Fantasy VII back at E3 2015 -- and today we get a better look at what that remake means. Final Fantasy VII kicked off the PlayStation Experience keynote this morning, with a two-minute trailer for the remaster (embedded below) and news that the original game is available on PS4 today. There's no word on a launch window for Final Fantasy VII on PS4 just yet. Update: That said, a press release issued just after the trailer suggests that the remake could arrive in episodic chunks, in what it's calling a "multi-part series, with each entry providing its own unique experience." Hrmmm.

'Gears of War' studio is making a MOBA for PS4 and PC

Epic Games, the studio best known for the Gears of War franchise, is building Paragon, a new multiplayer shooter for the PlayStation 4 and PC. It's a MOBA (multiplayer online battle arena), meaning its gameplay is reminiscent of titles like League of Legends, Smite or Dota -- two teams of five players fighting for control of a single map. Paragon includes a card-collecting aspect, too, because if you're going to make a game that appeals to a large online audience (Hearthstone, anyone?), it might as well have all the bells and whistles. Paragon enters open beta on PS4 and PC in summer 2016, followed by a paid "early access" launch in early spring. Epic announced Paragon during today's PlayStation Experience keynote address.

The PlayStation 4 version of Ratchet & Clank, a mega-remaster of Insomniac's PlayStation 2 game, lands on Sony's new console on April 12th. That's just before the Ratchet & Clank movie hits theaters on April 29th. Ratchet & Clank on PS4 is more than a simple visual upgrade: It's a completely new game based on the PS2 version, with an expanded story, more planets to explore, new weapons, fresh controls and other goodies.

It's a good day to be a Vita owner. Bastion, the gorgeous 2011 isometric adventure from Supergiant Games, is out today on Sony's handheld console. The company announced Bastion's latest launch during its PlayStation Experience keynote this morning. This brings Bastion's platforms up to seven: PC, Mac, Linux, Xbox 360, iOS, Chrome, PlayStation 4 and, now, Vita. It's a Cross-Buy game on Sony's platforms, meaning if you own it on PS4, you automatically get it on Vita, and vice versa. Score!

Vlambeer co-founder Rami Ismail dropped a huge surprise during the PlayStation Experience keynote in San Fransisco on Saturday: Nuclear Throne is available now on PlayStation 4 and Vita, while the Steam version officially hits version 1.0. Nuclear Throne is an addictive, pixelated action game that's amassed a cult following of more than 100,000 players since its launch on Steam Early Access in 2013 -- and this community is about to grow (or mutate).

Sony's big PlayStation Experience event kicks off in San Francisco in less than an hour -- but if you're not in attendance, it'll still be easy to follow along. The whole event will be streamed on the PlayStation website or over on the PlayStation Twitch channel (you can find the video stream below!). We're not sure what exactly Sony will be announcing just yet, but we're expecting to hear a lot about PlayStation VR and hopefully some new games -- it's a two-hour keynote, so it seems safe to say Sony has a few big announcements up its sleeve. We'll also be reporting straight from the keynote and the show floor all day long, so stay tuned for all the news from PlayStation Experience today.

  • PlayStation is now Sony's top priority

    by

Sony's an enormous multinational conglomerate. Some perspective on just how big it is: Sony's ranked 105 on the Fortune Global 500 (for 2014), has its hands in everything from chemical manufacturing to financial services to Hollywood films and employs over 140,000 people. Of that number, just 8,000 people make up Sony Computer Entertainment -- what's better known as the PlayStation brand. And that small group of people is now largely responsible for the near future of the mothership. In short, Sony's leaning on its PlayStation arm to buoy the whole company's financials for the next several years. No pressure! What does that feel like from inside Sony HQ in Japan? I asked SCE Worldwide Studios head (and video game character) Shuhei "Shu" Yoshida this past weekend at the PlayStation Experience in Las Vegas.

Been jonesing for that matte gray, extra-limited 20th Anniversary Edition PlayStation 4? It's time to take action. As promised, Sony is now taking pre-orders for the commemorative game console in the US. Plunking down $500 will get you the system, a special controller and a PlayStation Camera in the PS1's distinctive-yet-drab colors. If you're successful, your unit should ship on December 21st. You'd better act fast if you want this machine, however. With just 12,300 systems shipping worldwide, you probably can't buy one for much longer -- Sony's store is already buckling under the demand. If you miss out, you can always live vicariously through Joystiq's unboxing of the special-run PS4. Update: To absolutely no one's surprise, the Sony Store already says it's "out of stock." There's no certainty that this is the only batch the company is selling, but you may have to resort to auction sites from here on out.
