Hulu orders an animated sci-fi sitcom from 'Rick and Morty' co-creator
Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland is going to be busy for the foreseeable future. He's just signed a two-season series order with Hulu for Solar Opposites, an animated sitcom about aliens living in America's heartland, according to Deadline. Apparently, the extraterrestrials bicker about whether their spot on earth is "awful or awesome," the publication writes. Details are scant, but Roiland will be joined by Mike McMahan, who has worked as a writer's assistant and story editor on Rick and Morty. McMahan will serve as co-creator and executive producer on Solar Opposites.
'High Guardian Spice' is Crunchyroll's first original series
Seemingly every streaming service is moving into original programming and AT&T-owned Crunchyroll is next to take a swing at it. Ellation Studios (also owned by AT&T) will start producing original shows for the anime-streaming service, starting with High Guardian Spice next year. Further details will be revealed at September's Crunchyroll Expo in San Jose, according to TechCrunch, but for now we know the show is about four girls at the magical High Guardian Academy where they'll train to become defenders of the city. Sounds a little like Hogwarts. The show will have an all-female writer's room and if you want a sneak peek, check out the video embedded below.
What's coming to Netflix in September: 'Black Panther' and 'Maniac'
Fall is in the air, and with the changing of the seasons comes the changing of what's available on Netflix. The headliners this month are Black Panther and second seasons for a trio of Netflix originals (American Vandal, Atypical, Iron Fist) and Norm Macdonald's talk show, but there's plenty more to keep you glued to the couch, too.
Netflix test interrupts your binge session with video promos
Netflix is trying out a new way to suggest content to viewers: Show them promos between episodes. The streaming company confirmed the tests to TechCrunch, but it doesn't appear to be a feature rolling out to everyone -- only a "small percentage" of subscribers will see the experimental psuedo-ads. And yet, the few viewers who have are irate, claiming the full-video interruptions are just as bad as commercials.
‘Black-ish’ showrunner Kenya Barris signs on at Netflix
Kenya Barris, writer and director of the Emmy-nominated ABC show Black-ish and its Freeform spinoff Grown-ish, has signed a multi-year deal at Netflix. It's the latest coup for the streaming giant, which lured away blockbuster show creator Shonda Rhimes a year ago and Glee producer Ryan Murphy back in February.
A screenwriter is working on a list of every hit film you can’t stream
We've all had moments trying to hunt down films that just don't seem to be anywhere online, whether on streaming services, for rent or to purchase. Screenwriter John August (Charlie's Angels, Big Fish, the upcoming live-action Aladdin) noticed that Ron Howard's light sci-fi film Cocoon wasn't available online, he started a list collecting other popular films from the last 30-odd years that are completely absent from the internet for reasons unknown -- and he's asking fellow cinephiles to help fill it out.

Facebook's 'shared viewing' video feature is coming to all groups
Facebook has made it clear that it wants to make video a crucial part of its business, as it looks to compete with the likes of YouTube, Amazon and Netflix. And, over the past few months, the company's been making changes to help it get there, launching new features aimed at making videos more social. One of those is Watch Party, an experimental tool introduced in January that lets members of Facebook groups watch videos together and simultaneously. That shared watching experience, which works with both live and pre-recorded videos, was only available to select users when it was first announced, but now Facebook is bringing it to every group worldwide.

Amazon may add to its ‘free’ TV streaming in the UK
Amazon's next foray into video probably isn't what you expect. No, the e-commerce juggernaut isn't jumping into VR (that we know of), it will potentially start offering more free, ad-supported channels however. At least in the United Kingdom. According to the UK's This is Money (an offshoot of The Daily Mail), Amazon recently posted a job listing for "head of free to air TV and advertising" based out of London. The expectation is that it'll broadcast Premier League soccer next year for free, with traditional commercials running during the matches.

Superhero epic 'Invincible' heads to Amazon as an animated series
Amazon Studios has greenlit an animated series based on the comic Invincible, which was created by artist Cory Walker and writer Robert Kirkman, who made The Walking Dead. The new show's source material tells the story of Mark Grayson, an ordinary teen whose father is the planet's Superman-like guardian. When Mark manifests powers himself, he discovers what it means to be a superhero -- with a twist that switches up the classic alien-becomes-Earth's-protector story.
Amazon's Fire TV Cube squeezes an Echo into its set-top box
It's been almost four years since Amazon first introduced the Echo smart speaker and its virtual assistant Alexa. It's also been just over four years since the the company first released its Fire TV set-top video box. Now, the two products are converging in a way they haven't before, in the form of the Amazon Fire TV Cube. As you might expect, it's a cube-shaped box you plug in to your TV; it runs the expected suite of apps like Netflix, Hulu, PlayStation Vue, HBO Go, Sling and Amazon's Prime Video service. And like the current Fire TV Stick and Fire TV box, you can talk to Alexa to search for movies and shows as well as access thousands of third-party "skills." But the Fire TV Cube is essentially a full-featured Echo, as well. It's always listening for the Alexa wake word, and you can talk to it even when your TV is off. The new box has eight microphones built in, similar to existing Echo hardware, which means you can speak to Alexa whenever you want as well as navigate the Fire TV Cube's interface with your voice.
Netflix renews controversial '13 Reasons Why' for a third season
Netflix's controversial teen drama 13 Reasons Why is returning for a third season in 2019, even though many believed the second season was unnecessary. The streaming giant confirmed the show's return with a teaser video.
