THQ Nordic says a new Saints Row game is 'deep in development'

THQ Nordic had plenty of updates about upcoming games from its sprawling empire in its latest earnings report. Perhaps the most notable is that its Volition studio is "deep in development" on a new Saints Row game. It didn't offer any information on when to expect the next entry in the popular series, but it'd be the first full title since Saints Row IV in 2013.

The Saints Row series has always been appropriately wacky and out there thanks to developer Volition, but shortly after Saints Row IV released, the company went a bit quiet. It's back now with a brand new game with a whole new attitude. It's called Agents of Mayhem, and it's an open-world adventure set within the Saints Row universe.

If you ignore most of the other, far worse sins, wanton consumerism is diabolically evil, which is why it's so fitting that the launch trailer for Volition's upcoming Saints Row: Gat Out of Hell should appear as a lengthy informercial packed with 1-800 numbers and endless groin trauma. If taunting spirits in a video game just isn't enough for you, you might be the type of gamer that developer Volition and publisher Deep Silver are targeting with their Saints Row: Gat Out of Hell pre-order promotion. According to a press release, if you pre-order either Gat Out of Hell for Xbox 360/PS3 or the Saints Row: Re-Elected & Gat Out of Hell combo pack for Xbox One/PS4 at UK retailer GAME, you'll receive a oujia board which you can (supposedly) use to contact the dead. Okay, so it's kind of a weird pre-order bonus, but remember the Dubstep Gun that came in special editions of Saints Row 4? A ouija board (or "Wee-Ja" as this particular model is called) is downright tame compared to what the Third Street Saints gang has in their arsenal. The ouija board also acts as a sort of ticket to a bigger prize. By sending in a picture of the ouija board in use, would-be mediums get entered for a chance to win a night on the haunted town with UK spirit medium, Derek Acorah. Saints Ros 4: Re-Elected and Gat Out of Hell will be summoned to PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC platforms on January 20 in the Americas and January 23 internationally. GAME lists Gat Out of Hell at £24.99 and Saints Row 4: Re-Elected & Gat Out of Hell for £34.99. [Image: Deep Silver]

Following "over a month" of QA testing, the Steam version of destructible world shooter Red Faction: Guerrilla is now officially available. Unlike the original PC version of Red Faction: Guerrilla, the Steam edition does not rely on the now-defunct Games for Windows Live service for online functionality. Instead, it utilizes Valve's digital distribution service and the myriad features that come with it. Thus Red Faction: Guerrilla now features support for Steam Trading Cards, achievements and online leaderboards. To sweeten the re-release pot further, the game's developers also added a new "Behemoth" mode to the game as well as six new Wrecking Crew maps. Despite these changes, the Steam version of Red Faction: Guerrilla will recognize existing saves from the game's original release. If you own the Games for Windows Live version of Red Faction: Guerrilla, simply update to the new Steam version, start the game as usual and it will automatically attempt to import saves created prior to the patch. If you don't own Red Faction: Guerrilla, now would be a good time to grab a copy. The Steam edition is discounted to $3 for the next 48 hours. [Image: Nordic Games]

Saints Row publisher Deep Silver is auctioning off a truck based on one of the franchise's vehicles for charity. The studio's 1956 Ford F-100 available for bidding on eBay starts at $7,500 and has just over 80,000 miles on it. The truck is decorated to look strikingly similar to the Genki Manapult truck offered as a pre-order bonus and DLC for Saints Row: The Third. The real-life Genki Manapult vehicle is complete with its trademark cannon, which shoots t-shirts as opposed to people. As of this writing, the auction does not have any bidders. All proceeds for the auction will go to Wings for Life, a not-for-profit spinal cord research foundation that funds "world-class scientific research and clinical trials around the globe aimed at healing the injured spinal cord." The auction is slated to end on Saturday, December 13. [Image: Deep Silver]

Red Faction: Guerrilla is the latest game to completely shed its Games for Windows Live coat, and will now begin testing full Steam support features, Nordic Games announced. The publisher invited players to participate in a public beta of the game's new Steam-based functionality, which includes matchmaking and multiplayer support via Steamworks. The game's public beta will also feature leaderboards, voice chat and achievements via Valve's PC gaming service. Those interested in participating in the beta are instructed to follow this guide, selecting Red Faction: Guerrilla in step one and using the password "nordicrfgbeta" and the beta branch "publicbeta." First launching in 2009, Red Faction: Guerrilla was part of the $4.9 million set of intellectual properties purchased by Nordic Games in THQ's liquidation auction in April 2013, seeing itself as a "middle man" for potential sequels in its new series. The publisher told Joystiq at Gamescom in August that it's "not the right time" for Red Faction: Guerrilla 2. [Image: Nordic Games]

Deep Silver issued a new trailer and screens for Saints Row: Gat out of Hell today, the stand-alone expansion for the publisher's popular open-world shooter, Saints Row 4. The game will feature "seven deadly weapons" for hero Johnny Gat to use against demonic enemies, each seen in action in the trailer after the break. The expansion will now launch one week ahead of schedule on January 20, 2015 alongside the Xbox One and PS4 ports of Saints Row 4, dubbed "Re-Elected." Deep Silver announced both projects at PAX Prime in late August with January 27 release dates attached to them. Those pre-ordering the $50 Xbox One or PS4 bundles, which include both Saints Row 4 and Gat Out of Hell, will also receive the Devil's Workshop and Plague of Frogs DLC packs for the games. Otherwise, players can purchase Gat Out of Hell on its own for $20 for PC, Xbox 360 and PS3. [Image: Deep Silver]

After ten years at Volition, creative director Steve Jaros announced he's leaving the Saints Row studio to join the team at Valve Software. Jaros, who was at PAX Prime showcasing upcoming Saints Row 4 standalone expansion Gat out of Hell, enthused on Twitter about contributing to Saints Row and his "life changing" time at Volition. He added it was time to move on to "new adventures" at Valve, though he didn't specify what those adventures would entail. In other words, expect the portal gun to get a dubstep attachment soon enough. As for Volition, the Deep Silver studio's working with High Voltage Software to bring Saints Row 4 to PS4 and Xbox One on January 27, 2015, with Gat out of Hell releasing on the same day for last-gen, current-gen and PC. Developer Volition announced at PAX Prime that they have released the official software development kit (SDK) for Saints Row 4 on PC, allowing enthusiasts of virtual sandbox mayhem with the technical know-how to create ... pretty much whatever they want. This can only end well. Although Saints Row 4 was released in August of last year, Volition is keeping up support for the game with two projects, both due on January 27, 2015: Saints Row 4: Re-elected will port the base game and all the DLC released so far to Xbox One and PS4, while Saints Row: Gat Out of Hell is a standalone expansion that sends players literally into the bowels of Hell. Volition has announced a new Saints Row 4 standalone expansion, titled Saints Row: Gat Out of Hell, during its panel today at PAX Prime 2014. A trailer shows Saints gang members Kinzie and Johnny Gat delving - and this is not a metaphor - into Hell to rescue the Saints Row boss who was promoted to President of the United States during Saints Row 4. Hell is said to be roughly 50 percent the size of Steelport - the city from Saints Row: The Third and Saints Row 4 - and players will be able to fly around the city using demonic wings. Volition is also including weapons themed after Biblical curses and stories, including a gun that fires a plague of locusts, a gun that fires a plague of frogs, and a chair with machine guns and rockets strapped to it, representing sloth - one of the seven deadly sins. There will also be a musical number. The expansion will feature 2-player co-op where one partner plays as Kinzie while the other takes control of Johnny Gat. The expansion will be released January 27, for $19.95. Check out the trailer after the break.

Tired of reading about companies slashing office workforce and laying off employees? Well, the coin has flipped and given us a bit of good news on the other foot. (We may have combined too many expressions there.) Saints Row 4 developer Volition is looking to expand their office floor space as well as hire 100 new employees. Time to dust off that resume! The News-Gazette reports that the city officials representing Champaign, Illinois - where Volition is headquartered - are proposing financial incentives regarding the company expansion, including up to $150,000 in funding for space acquisition and renovation. City Council will consider the request at its study session on Tuesday, July 22. We're not sure if potential hires will be forced to wear their Saints Row pride on their sleeve, but it couldn't hurt, right? Or is this one of those "don't wear the band's t-shirt to the band's concert" situations? [Image: Deep Silver]

The Xbox 360 version of Volition's open-world mayhem simulator Saints Row: The Third is currently free for Xbox Live Gold subscribers as part of the service's ongoing Games with Gold promotion. Saints Row: The Third marked a sharp turn for the Saints Row franchise, transforming a once-straightforward crime drama series into a full-blown parody of the genre. The series would later reach new heights of ridiculousness in Saints Row 4, which we named as one of our favorite games of 2013. Microsoft recently expanded its Games with Gold program, pledging to release free Xbox One games for subscribers starting next month. [Image: Volition]

Microsoft's Games With Gold promotion rolls on, bringing two new, free games to Xbox Live Gold subscribers during the month of May. The first game, according to a new blog entry from Xbox figurehead Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb, will be Dust: An Elysian Tail, which will be available from May 1 to May 15 for gratis download. Our review knocked Dust: An Elyisan Tail for doing little to innovate as a platform-action game, but said the game "does manage to look and play beautifully throughout." From May 16 to May 31, Xbox Live Gold subscribers will be able to download Saints Row The Third at no cost. Our review of Volition's over-the-top open world action hit awarded the game four and a half stars, and pointed out that Saints Row The Third genuinely feels like a labor of love from its creators, that offers a stunning number of things to do and wacky, entertaining sights to see. Like all Games With Gold offerings, these two games will be available for free download to anyone with a valid Xbox Live Gold subscription and a functional connection to the Xbox Live Marketplace. Once downloaded, they become yours to keep, whether you renew your Xbox Live Gold subscription or not. [Image: Deep Silver/Humble Hearts]
