The first time we saw a pico projector some of us thought: "Err... What's the point?" Slide show presentations from your phone? Doubt it -- not powerful enough for practical use. Cinematic experience in the toilet? Maybe, but you'd want a built-in projector on your PMP instead of a separate brick. Funky dance? Only in Japan. Finally, WowWee took a break from robotics to give us the answer with its foldable Cinemin Swivel pico projector: for watching videos on the ceiling while lying in bed, obviously. Still, we have our doubts about image quality, portability and practicality -- especially for $299. Read on to find out if this little guy is worth it.

  • Lancer's iJector is the $700 projector for your $200 iPhone

For that $700 price quoted above you were probably hoping for some sort of impossibly small and stylish pico projector, able to consume your iPhone, beam its contents onto the nearest flat surface, and make everyone nearby say "Ooh." Sadly the truth is not quite so charming, with Lancer Corporation's iJector looking to be smallish but not particularly svelte -- or stylish, for that matter. It sports the ubiquitous iPod dock on top that will accept a suite of Apple devices ranging from Gen 1 iPod nanos to iPhones running OS 3.0, and also has video input and output so that it can work with non-Apple devices, beaming a maximum 50-inch image at a disappointing 557 x 234 resolution. Did we mention that, at ¥64,800, it's nearly $700? It is, and it's shipping to Japan next month if for some reason you're still interested.[Via CoolestGadgets]

There's only one thing (okay, so maybe that's a stretch) that we love more than a mod that gives you all sorts of bragging rights: a mod that adds all sorts of utility. Tanntraad's most recent concoction -- a DIY iPod video projector -- most certainly ratchets up the PMP's functionality, as this homegrown device requires no external power, a ridiculously small amount of parts and no prior experience as a projectionist. Needless to say, the resulting unit blows up the video on your iPod for an entire room to see, and while we're sure the quality is nothing to write home about, you can give it a go yourself by following the instructions in the read link below.

Here's another convincing reason your boss should buy you an iPod. The iProjector is a video projector with a built-in iPod dock. And that dock isn't just for show - with your iPod inserted you can project your videos directly onto your conference room or home theater screen. The dock also charges your iPod battery and if your video source happens to be a plain old DVD player, gaming console or computer - heck, you can attach those things too.The iProjector is scheduled to debut at CES 2007 and is brought to us by Ion Audio, makers of the ITTUSB Turntable, which I happen to love. Here's what we know about the iProjector so far: It works with iPod with video, iPod photo and iPod nano, supports SVGA 800x600 native resolution, 24-bit color, 1000 ANSI lumens brightness and throws a projection size of 30 inches by 90 inches. Not too shabby! What we don't know yet is the price. Stay tuned till January![via DVGuru]Thanks, David!
