The console gaming world could be about to get a lot more open. For a long time, Sony was resistant to let people play PS4 games with their friends on other platforms. It cracked open the door with a cross-play beta for Fortnite a little over a year ago, and now it's allowing all developers to make use of cross-platform capabilities.

Dauntless caught the attention of many gamers in May, when it hit early access on PS4 and Xbox One (a Switch release is planned for later this year). It's one of the first titles to offer cross-platform play across those consoles and PC, and the servers were overwhelmed with people trying to check out the free-to-play RPG. Just a few months later, Phoenix Labs is bringing Dauntless out of early access with the biggest update to the game so far.

Dauntless is an online monster-hunting game from former Riot Games, Blizzard, Capcom and BioWare developers at indie outfit Phoenix Labs, and it launched in beta this May. In its current form, Dauntless is only available on PC, but that's set to change in April when it lands on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and the new Epic Games Store. There's no mention of the game hitting Steam, but it's also set to come to Nintendo Switch and mobile platforms in 2019.

PlayStation gamers have been frustrated by the lack of cross-platform support for the popular game Fortnite. But now Sony has some good news. Sony looking for ‘solution’ to PS4 cross-play woes

Fortnite is great in that it lets people play together no matter what platform they're using. Except, that is, for PS4. Sure, PlayStation fans can link up with buddies on mobile, Mac or PC, but playing with friends who have a Nintendo Switch or Xbox One is not possible right now. Even logging into your account to play Fortnite on PS4 once means you're blocked from using it on Switch; you'll need a new account to keep playing on Nintendo's hybrid console.

It's 2018 and developers are finally taking mobile games seriously -- or it's the other way around, depending on whom you ask. "I think what we are seeing is now these AAA games from traditional PC and console developers going mobile, and they are among the most popular mobile games that exist," Epic Games co-founder Tim Sweeney says. Epic CTO Kim Liberi jumps in and adds, "I think it's almost the other way, I think it's that mobile developers are taking games more seriously."

'Minecraft' is a microcosm of Microsoft's gaming strategy

Minecraft is pretty important to Microsoft. Not only did the company spend $2.5 billion in 2014 to own the world's most popular building-block game, but just last week it promoted Matt Booty, the head of Minecraft, to corporate VP of Microsoft Studios. As far as Microsoft sees it, there's a direct line from Minecraft to Gears of War, Halo and all of the company's major first-party games. And now, with Booty's ascent, there's a new Minecraft boss.

As ‘PUBG’ finally exits beta, its creators look to the future

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG) has been this year's biggest surprise. Since launching on Steam Early Access in late March, the game, which conceptually started life as a DayZ mod, has picked up 25 million players on PC, not to mention a marketing and publishing deal from Microsoft for an Xbox One version. This week, version 1.0 arrives on Steam, gaining a second map and new instant replay feature in the process. But for PUBG Corp CEO Chang Han Kim, even though the game is losing its beta status, work is far from finished. "When we first started this project and thought of the Early Access model, we never took it as a model where you start developing a game, you complete it, you ship it out and then be done with it," Kim said through a translator. "As long as we have fans out there playing our game, it will never be complete."

Sega Mega Drive classic Streets of Rage is now available on mobile, thanks to the Sega Forever retro games service, so you can get your dose of denim-clad muscle brawling wherever you are. It also supports local, two-player co-operative raging over Wi-Fi, and works cross-platform between iOS and Android, so you can also bring a touch of nostalgia to your holiday celebrations by battling your siblings and then getting into trouble with your mom when one of you punches the other IRL.

The big 'Minecraft' cross-platform update is live, but not on Switch

The Better Together update brings the biggest set of changes to hit Minecraft in years, expanding the Community Marketplace, streamlining access to third-party servers and uniting the game across platforms -- and it's all live today. Well, most of it is. Better Together is rolling out across Xbox One, Windows 10, virtual-reality and mobile versions of Minecraft right now, but it won't hit the Switch until later this year. Microsoft's original plan, which it unveiled at E3 in June, was to launch Better Together on Switch at the same time as the other platforms (hence the title of the update). PlayStation 4 was never part of the equation for this initial rollout. "We just flat-out couldn't get those two completely in sync," Microsoft Studios Corporate Vice President Matt Booty says.

PS4 and Xbox owners were able to play 'Fortnite' together

You know how Sony is adamant about not allowing cross-platform play between PlayStation 4, Switch and Xbox One? Well, something interesting happened in Epic Games' Fortnite over the weekend: Xbox players were found in a handful PlayStation Battle Royale matches. A Reddit user noticed that someone in his PS4 game had a space in their handle (something allowed in Xbox Gamertags, but not on PS4), and then the thread picked up to include further examples like a father and son playing together on disparate consoles. A Twitch stream with video proof is embedded below. Curious, indeed.

'Rocket League' will die without cross-console multiplayer

All online games eventually die. But the difference between the original version of World of Warcraft and, say, Call of Duty: Ghosts is that WoW was more of a service on an open system (PC). Players were able to gradually migrate to its annual expansions while remaining a part of the overall population. Comparatively, CoD is a franchise with annual sequels on several different pieces of hardware, each with cordoned-off players who jump from one game to the next. But sometimes you don't want to stop playing a game just because seemingly everyone has moved on after 14 months. Rocket League developer Psyonix's Jeremy Dunham has an idea for how to fix these fractured player bases: opening up cross-platform multiplayer.

'Gears of War 4' makes cross-platform multiplayer official

Last December Microsoft tried out something it hadn't done in quite awhile: adversarial cross-platform multiplayer. For a single weekend, there was a test between folks playing against each other in Gears of War 4 on PC and Xbox One. Now, that's moving from a beta to an official release. Before you reach for the pitchforks, though, this is only for the brawny shooter's (unranked) Social Quickplay mode. From a post on the Windows 10 blog:
