Apple's AirPods won't be ready for the holidays

Apple announced the AirPods during September's "See You" event with a scheduled launch at the end of October. But late that month, the company delayed shipments without setting a release date in the future. Well, the tech titan's wireless headphones still haven't come out and it's unclear when they'll finally be ready for the public. For a company that places enormous emphasis on the pageantry of dramatically unveiling and releasing its products to a ravenous public, this is an unusual and humbling letdown.

Tesla was set to reveal an "unexpected" product today, but you'll have to wait a few more days to find out what it is. In a tweet early this morning, CEO Elon Musk said that the announcement has been postponed until Wednesday (October 19th), because it "needs a few more days of refinement." It's still not clear exactly what Tesla is announcing; speculation has ranged from the Model 3's final design, to a new PowerWall model to an updated version of the Autopilot.

Chalk up another high-profile indie game being delayed. This time it's Cuphead, the platformer styled after 1930's animation (think: Steamboat Willie and Betty Boop). The Steam and Xbox game was scheduled for a 2016 release, but that simply isn't feasible anymore according to developer StudioMDHR. "We wanted to finish our game 80 years after 1936 but it will now be 81," a blog post reads. "Throughout this year we discussed reducing the scope to make a 2016 release, but we made the difficult decision to delay the launch in order to ship with our vision intact."

A bunch of PS4 exclusives were supposed to drop this year, but almost all of them had been delayed. The latest casualty? Gravity Rush 2. The sequel to one of the key launch titles for the PS Vita was supposed to come out on December 2nd, a few days before the long-awaited release of The Last Guardian. Unfortunately, it's been pushed back to January 20, 2017. The game's director, Keiichiro Toyama, has explained on the PlayStation blog that while production has been going smoothly, the "landscape for that release date has changed dramatically."

South Park: The Fractured But Whole is set to hit PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC in the first three months of 2017, a slight delay from its initial release date of December 6th. Ubisoft announced the date change in a two-sentence update on the Ubiblog.

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, was crowdfunded to the tune of $5.5 million last year, with an ETA of March 2017. It promises to be a spiritual successor to the Castlevania series, but this week, project lead Koji Igarashi (known colloquially as IGA) personally announced via Kickstarter that the game will now be pushed back to "the first half of 2018." The delay, IGA says, is because the game is currently at risk of not "meeting [his] quality standards." To that end, he's adding additional developers to the team, who will hopefully be able to put the project back on track. He also offered his apologies to anyone affected by the delay.

If you're eager to play Super Time Force developer Capybara Games' latest title, Below, you're going to have to wait a bit longer. The atmospheric and ethereal indie game has been delayed once again, this time with no new release date. Below was originally supposed to come out this summer for Xbox One and PC, but Capy needs a little more time to make sure it meets the studio's high standards.

  • 'Final Fantasy XV' delayed to November 29th

Noctis and friends have put their bromance-filled road trip on hold. Square Enix has confirmed today that Final Fantasy XV, the long-awaited JRPG once known as Final Fantasy Versus XIII, will now launch on November 29th, rather than September 30th. The two-month delay will make room for an update that was going to be offered as a "day-one patch." Director Hajime Tabata believes the downloadable would have been unfair to players with poor internet access, which is why he's decided to wait and include it with the main disc. The extra time, Square Enix promises, will also be used to "conduct quality testing" and add "further polish."

International crowdfunding is always risky business. Even if a project makes it to market, overseas backers usually have to pay a shipping premium. Sometimes, it's worse: today backers of Jibo's social 'family robot' have been told the product's release has been cancelled in all markets except the US and Canada. The company is now preparing to issue refunds to customers in 45 countries. The issue? Jibo apparently has a hard time understanding accented English.

The rumors are true: No Man's Sky isn't coming out in June, as originally planned. Instead, the world will have to wait until August to play developer Hello Games' ultra ambitious space-exploration game. Writing on the PlayStation Blog, lead developer Sean Murray says that the game will now launch this August 9th domestically and August 12th in the UK. The reason? He says a few bits weren't up to snuff. "We understand that this news is disappointing," he writes. "Making this game is the hardest thing I've ever done in my life, but we are so close now, and we're prepared to make the tough choices to get it right."

BioWare has confirmed what we already knew: the next instalment in the Mass Effect franchise has been pushed back to next year. Publisher EA teased the bad news during an investor's call in March, when CFO Blake Jorgensen said it was scheduled for a fiscal "fourth quarter" release. Still, today's announcement is a useful confirmation -- there's no way to misinterpret BioWare's new blog post, which states the game will "ship in early 2017." The studio says the delay is due to the scale of Andromeda, which will provide players with "an unprecedented level of freedom."

GoPro's Karma drone was due out the first half of this year, but we're already into the fifth month and it's nowhere to be found. That's because, according to the company's latest financial statements, it's been delayed. Surprise! The company now says that the Karma won't hit until this holiday season. In the next six months, any number of things could happen. For instance, we said that AirDog -- another follow-behind drone -- was the company that GoPro needed to beat or buy when we checked it out earlier this year. That firm could possibly release a new model that blows the Karma out of the water by November.

There's good news and bad for Nintendo's upcoming Legend of Zelda open-world title for the Wii U console. First the bad: It's been delayed again, so it won't arrive now until 2017. The good news is that it's going to come out on the next-gen Nintendo NX console, which, by the way, Nintendo just revealed. In a (roughly translated) tweet, Nintendo Japan says that it pushed back the game "for further quality improvement," adding that it will be released "simultaneously" on the Nintendo NX.

EA will release Mirror's Edge Catalyst on June 7th in North America and June 9th across Europe, a delay of two weeks. This is the second time Catalyst has been delayed; the first re-scheduling pushed the game's release back three months, from February 23rd to May 24th. In the first instance, DICE Senior Producer Sara Jansson said the team needed more time to polish the game's mechanics. This time around, Design Director Erik Odeldahl says DICE needs more time to work on Social Play features.

Coolest Cooler is the latest proof that there are a lot of interesting ideas on Kickstarter from companies that lack a plan to execute them. The company set a funding record in 2014 with $13 million for a do-it-all cooler with a waterproof Bluetooth speaker, USB charger, cutting board and blender. However, it burned through the entire amount after shipping just a third of the products, showing that the tempting $185 price tag was way too generous. To complete orders, the company now says that existing backers (who already paid the full Kickstarter price) will have to pony up another $97 for "expedited" shipping of their Coolest Coolers.

'Gone Home' follow-up 'Tacoma' pushed back to 2017

Fullbright, the studio behind the critically acclaimed Gone Home, has delayed its new game Tacoma. The sci-fi mystery was penciled in for the second half of this year, but it's now been pushed back to 2017. The reason for the delay is quality control. Tacoma has been in development for two years now, and was pretty far along (and enjoyable) when we tried it out last summer. It played out similarly to the narrative-driven Gone Home, but added additional gameplay in the form of gravity-based puzzles, and more than a little of System Shock's eerie tension thrown in for good measure.

It's been almost four years since players gathered a crew on the SSV Normandy SR-2 and saved the universe with Commander Shepard. A new Mass Effect game was originally scheduled for 2016, however an investor call with EA's CFO Blake Jorgensen suggests that Andromeda has now slipped into 2017. If you're waiting for the next installment of the Uncharted series, get ready to wait just a little bit longer than you might have planned. While its open beta may be just days away, tonight Sony announced that Uncharted 4: A Thief's End will launch on May 10th. That's instead of the plan to launch April 26th, which was a delay from the previously announced release date of March 18th. According to Sony it's still on track to go gold for disc manufacturing later this month, but the delay is to allow for more manufacturing time.

Mighty No. 9, the crowdfunded game from Mega Man creator Keiji Inafune, has been delayed for a third time. Fable Legends -- Lionhead's free, multiplayer-focused fantasy romp for Xbox One and Windows 10 -- is scheduled to launch after spring 2016. It was originally on tap to release this holiday season. The game's open beta will go live in the spring, ostensibly with the full release close behind. For now, Fable Legends will remain in closed beta, with the studio inviting 100,000 additional players over the coming weeks (sign up for that here).
