Huawei's latest quarterly results show that the Chinese company is doing just fine, despite ongoing trade issues with America. Third-quarter revenue is up 24.4 percent on the same period last year, while the company says it has shipped more than 185 million smartphones in the first three quarters of 2019, up 26 percent year-on-year.

A workaround that enabled Huawei's Mate 30 devices to install Google's Play Store and other apps has been shut down. LZ Play, an app that promised to allow users to run the apps they know and love, has been taken down after a researcher found it harnessed secret Huawei APIs. Subsequently, Google removed the phone from its SafetyNet system, essentially a list of trusted devices that could access Google services.

Huawei is at the center of a storm, barracked by sanctions that block it from working with its key partners. Its latest handset, the Mate 30 Pro, runs Android, Google's operating system, but can't access Google's services, so no Google Play, Google Maps, or YouTube. But Huawei is putting a brave face on all this, saying that the prowess of its cameras will make you forget all about Google. The Mate 30 Pro has some of the best cameras ever found on a smartphone, as well as one of the most powerful mobile chips out there. It has a gorgeous wrap-around display and speakers that will fill a room with sound. But is any of that technical brute force enough to make you forget about all the things you'll be giving up?

The Mate 30 Pro isn't the only new device Huawei showed off today. The company also revealed the Huawei Watch GT 2, its newest LiteOS wearable. When it launches in Europe later this year, Huawei will offer the Watch GT 2 in two sizes: 46mm and 42mm. The 46mm model features a 22mm strap and 1.39-inch AMOLED display with 454 x 454 resolution. The 42mm model, on the other hand, comes with a 20mm strap and a 1.2-inch AMOLED display with 390 x 390 resolution. The smaller model is also thinner and lighter.

Huawei's CEO Ren Zhengfei said the company is willing to help boost a western rival in the global 5G race as a way to ease tensions with the West. In a recent interview, Ren told The Economist Huawei would give another company "perpetual access" to its existing 5G patents, code and technical blueprints in return for a one-time fee.

Samsung may finally be ready to launch the Galaxy Fold, but other smartphone makers seem to be collectively experiencing commitment phobia. At IFA 2019, companies like Huawei, LG and TCL cooled their efforts on the foldable flagship race in various different ways. While Samsung saw IFA as the venue to show the world how it's attempted to mitigate the problems with a folding screen, most other players are sitting out the hype.

Even if you somehow managed to get up to watch Huawei's IFA 2019 keynote, what you saw likely didn't give you a jolt of energy. That's because compared to past Huawei keynotes, the company's latest had a more subdued atmosphere. With a US ban that's unlikely to lift anytime soon, Huawei's Richard Yu wasn't his usual boisterous self. Huawei started things off with its new Kirin 990 chipset, which the company says is the world's first mobile system-on-a-chip with built-in 5G modem. Huawei also showed off its new noise-canceling FreeBuds 3 in-ear Bluetooth headphones, two 'new' P30 Pro models designed to cleverly skirt the company's Android ban and a new router.

Huawei has been making truly wireless earbuds for several years now, inspired (if that's the word) by Apple's literally traffic-stopping AirPods. While we wait for Apple to upgrade its headphones (probably in a week or so), Huawei unveiled its third-generation Freebuds, and they're an interesting proposition -- especially if you're an Android phone owner.

Huawei's Kirin 990 is a mobile CPU with 5G built in

Let's play a game of technicalities. A few days ago, Samsung announced the Exynos 980, the company's first processor with an integrated 5G modem. In February, Qualcomm also sort of announced it had an integrated 5G mobile platform that supports millimeter wave (mmwave) technology. Today, at IFA 2019, Huawei is unveiling the Kirin 990 5G, which it is calling the "industry's first 5G SoC." The new chipset has, you guessed it, a radio onboard that makes it compatible with the networking standard that's being lit up worldwide, although Huawei's system doesn't support mmwave.

Today, Huawei accused the US of carrying out cyberattacks, attempted entrapment, unlawful searches and more. The company says the US has "been using every tool at its disposal" including "unscrupulous means" to disrupt the business operations of Huawei and its partners. The accusations, which were made without evidence, come one day after the US and Poland signed an agreement to rigorously investigate 5G network equipment from foreign providers like Huawei.

The US and Poland declared today that suppliers of 5G network equipment should be rigorously evaluated for foreign government control. Vice President Mike Pence and Polish President Andrzej Duda signed an agreement to tighten guidelines of 5G network security, The Wall Street Journal reports. The deal didn't name Huawei specifically, but it's the latest move in Washington's attempt to exclude China from 5G networks.

Huawei will unveil its flagship Mate 30 smartphone in Munich, Germany on September 19th, it has confirmed in a tweet and short video. The tagline "Rethink Possibilities" sounds very appropriate, as the company reportedly won't be able to sell the device with Google's official Android OS and services like the Play Store, Maps and YouTube. That's due to the fact that US companies are currently banned from doing business with Huawei.

The US government has granted Huawei another 90 days to buy from American suppliers. The "temporary general license" extension will allow Huawei to continue servicing existing US customers before it is fully blacklisted, Reuters reports. The company now has through November 19th to maintain existing telecom networks and provide software updates to existing Huawei handsets.

Huawei hasn't had any luck reversing the US trade ban despite promises of removing some restrictions. It might be a long while before the company is forced to cut all its ties, however. Reuters sources have claimed the Commerce Department is expected to grant Huawei another 90-day "temporary general license" that will renew a reprieve set to expire on August 19th. The arrangement will reportedly let Huawei both maintain current telecom networks and supply software updates for phones. Your P30 Pro should still be up to date months after the ban took effect, and might even stay current throughout 2019.

An investigation by The Washington Post claims Huawei technicians helped African governments spy on domestic political opponents. According to the report, Huawei employees helped authorities in Uganda intercept encrypted messages and allowed police in Zambia to locate opposition bloggers. Such claims could validate the Trump administration's concerns about the use of Huawei technology in the US, but Huawei told The Washington Post it has "never been engaged in 'hacking' activities."

Samsung's midrange phones helped its market share surge in Europe

Samsung might have good reason for suggesting that midrange phones could help it escape its profit slump. Canalys estimated that Samsung was thriving in Europe in the second quarter of 2019 thanks partly to its midrange phones, surging to 40.6 percent share versus 33.9 percent a year ago. That's 18.3 million phones in total. It had three of the top five shipping phones, all of which were more affordable A-series models like the Galaxy A50 (which represented about 3.2 million units by itself). Flagships like the Galaxy S and Galaxy Note might have been the stars of the show, but it was the lower-cost models that really got people into stores.
