Hyundai has unveiled Ioniq, a new brand named after its current Ioniq EV that will be exclusively dedicated to all-electric cars. In other words, Ioniq looks like it will be much like to Hyundai what Polestar is to Volvo.

Hyundai's slippery Prophecy concept EV is controlled by joysticks
Hyundai has unveiled a new concept EV called the Prophecy with an ultra-aerodynamic profile and joysticks instead of a steering wheel. Meant to be on display at the cancelled Geneva Motor Show, the electric car aims to convey Hyundai's current design style called "Sensuous Sportiness." It's fair to say they succeeded, as it looks like a Porsche 911 Turbo from the rear and front while the side profile is lifted straight from a wind tunnel test.
Hyundai will make cheap EVs based on Canoo's subscription pods
EV startup Canoo first gained attention back in September 2019 when it announced its plans to launch the world's first subscription-only electric vehicle. Now, it's joining forces with Hyundai to develop an all-electric, scalable EV platform, which could make for simpler and cheaper models in the future.
Under the mighty propellers of Hyundai's flying taxi
By law, an automaker must mention "mobility" during any press event. Hyundai knows this but instead of just talking about how their cars can be configured to drive us around in the future, they went full-on flying machine. In a partnership with Uber, they announced the SA-1 air taxi at a press event. Sadly, at said press gathering what we saw was a tiny model. Fortunately, the full-size model was in the booth and we checked it out.
Watch Hyundai's CES 2020 press conference in seven minutes
Hyundai made good on its promise to show off its flying car concept at CES, but its press conference demonstrated exactly how it envisages integrating such a vehicle into everyday life. In what it calls "liberation from gridlock" and the "democratization of flight," Hyundai once again pointed at Uber as a vital ally in getting its flying cars into the skies. The rideshare platform wants to launch its Uber Air initiative in 2023, and Hyundai looks like it's got the goods to help it do exactly that.
Hyundai and Uber show off their flying taxi concept
Uber's flying taxi initiative is edging closer to reality. The ridesharing giant and Hyundai have unveiled a previously hinted-at flying taxi concept, the S-A1, that could ultimately handle Uber Air trips. It's not a radical break from projects with other partners, but that would still make it a very flexible vehicle. The all-electric aircraft would take off and land vertically, and carry as many as four passengers at cruising speeds of up to 180MPH for trips as far as 60 miles. Although it would have a pilot at first, it would ultimately be fully autonomous.
Hyundai will show off a flying car concept at CES
It wouldn't be CES without companies showing off wildly ambitious tech, and Hyundai plans to accommodate. On January 6th, the South Korean automaker will introduce the public to its first Personal Air Vehicle (PAV), as well as two other concepts: An autonomous land vehicle and a hub where passengers can transfer between the two modes of transportation.
Hackers targeted BMW, Hyundai in hunt for trade secrets
Two of the world's larger car makers were the victims of a sophisticated (but still not very successful) hacking campaign. Bayerricscher Rundfunk has learned that intruders from the hacking group OceanLotus slipped into the networks of BMW and Hyundai in an attempt to find trade secrets. BMW, at least, found the hackers quickly -- instead, it let them operate for "months" to gather data before blocking them at the start of December. No sensitive data would have leaked out of BMW, according to an anonymous security expert, and the attackers wouldn't have breached the central data center in Munich.
Hyundai's Vision T concept SUV looks like a driveable TIE Fighter
Hyundai took to the stage at Automobility LA 2019 to show off the latest evolution of its "concept SUV" now dubbed, the Vision T, as well as note some minor updates to its Ioniq line of eco-friendly sedans.
Hyundai will offer free self-driving rides in Irvine, California
A handful of Californians are about to experience self-driving cars first-hand. Hyundai, Via and (appropriately enough) Pony.ai are debuting a driverless ride hailing BotRide service in Irvine on November 4th. A group of "several hundred" residents, including college students, will have free access to autonomous Kona Electric SUVs that will take them between multiple points of interest, using Via's algorithms to optimize the number of passengers without making them walk too far at either end of the trip. Pony.ai will supply the sensor hardware and software to help navigate city streets.
Hyundai is building cruise control that mimics your driving style
If you've never used a car's cruise control functionality, the first time can be a jarring experience. Driving a car is a deeply personal experience; we all have our own driving styles and each car has its own quirks. South Korean automaker Hyundai thinks it can make the experience of using cruise control more intuitive by adding machine learning to the mix.
Watch an Olympian run in a bubble full of hydrogen car emissions
Earlier this year, Hyundai launched the Nexo: a hydrogen fuel cell-powered SUV that only emits water and oxygen. Even though the vehicle promises an environmentally friendly transportation option, its adoption is hampered by the lack of proper fuel cell infrastructure. So, how does one advertise a clean vehicle with a pretty severe limitation? Apparently, by getting an Olympic swimmer to run inside a bubble attached to a Nexo's exhaust to emphasize how clean its emission is.
Hyundai hires a NASA engineer to run its new 'flying car' division
Today, Hyundai threw its hat into the Urban Air Mobility (UAM) ring. The company announced that it's working to develop its own flying vehicles. Hyundai appointed Dr. Jaiwon Shin as head of its new UAM division. Most recently, Shin led NASA's Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate. At Hyundai, Shin and his team will be tasked with developing the core technologies behind the company's flying vehicles.
Hyundai teams with Aptiv to put self-driving cars on the road by 2022
Hyundai is getting particularly serious about its self-driving car strategy. The Korean car maker has formed a joint venture with Aptiv to foster Level 4 and Level 5 autonomous technology (that is, completely self-driving in some or all situations). They hope to start testing their systems in 2020 and hope to have a platform ready for autonomous taxis, fleets and other car makers in 2022.
Hyundai's first electric race car is a souped-up Veloster
Hyundai is joining the ranks of automakers with electric race cars -- if in a somewhat predictable way. The company has started work on the Veloster N ETCR, a race-tuned EV edition of the Veloster N built for its namesake ETCR championship starting in 2020. There aren't many performance claims at this stage, but it'll have a mid-mounted motor and rear wheel drive to meet race regulations. The gigantic spoiler and race-ready wheels make clear that this isn't just a simple conversion, and we'd expect the inside to be stripped down to the bare essentials.
Hyundai goes retro-futuristic with its 45 EV concept
Hyundai has taken the wraps off the "45," a retro-styled vehicle meant to show where it's going with future EVs. Teased last month, the styling is inspired by the 1974 Pony Couple Concept, the progenitor of Hyundai's popular Pony econo-mobile. The name "45" is thus a play on the anniversary of the original concept, and also a nod to the 45-degree angles on the roofline and other parts of the car. It also takes cues from 1920s art deco styling, the company said.
