'Katamari Damacy Reroll' upgrades the original for HD

The original Katamari Damacy game is coming back, and this time it's in high definition. Katamari Damacy Reroll is a remastered version for the Switch and PC that's due in December 7th, complete with motion control via Joy-Con, HD Rumble support, and a two-player mode. The arrival of the game simply makes sense, as we argued the original Wii's motion controllers made it an ideal target for a port many years ago -- the Switch adds everything we'd hoped for and more.

Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition isn't the only Final Fantasy game coming to the Switch. Square Enix is doubling down on its ports of the JRPG series by bringing Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles to Nintendo's console as soon as next year. Oh, and it's also getting its Sony debut on the PS4.

  • Strategy RPG 'Valkyria Chronicles 4' is a wonderful return to form

For 99 percent of people, Valkyria Chronicles 4 might as well be called Valkyria Chronicles 2. The first game was a captivating war story that blended top-down strategy with third-person movement and gunplay. The second, admittedly decent title was stuck on the PlayStation Portable and the third instalment never made it to the West. Sega tried to revive the franchise last year with Valkyria Revolution, an action-focused spin-off, but it was panned by critics and fans alike. A true successor to the 2008 original has been an awfully long time coming.

Earlier today, Nintendo revealed a bunch of new indie games are coming to the Switch (including the excellent Into The Breach). But the news wasn't over: The first season of Telltale's graphic adventure/guilt simulator The Walking Dead is available today on the hybrid console in North America, Europe and Australia for $20. Season two and the side story A New Frontier will both arrive on the system later this year.

During today's Summer Nindies stream, Nintendo announced a slew of indie games coming to the hybrid console -- and with no warning, revealed the unique mech strategy game is available today for $15.

Stop me if you've heard this before: One of Capcom's defining series during the PlayStation 2 era is getting remastered for modern hardware. No, it's not Resident Evil (again), this time it's Onimusha: Warlords. The port features widescreen display options, fixed camera angles, countless sword fights and remastered visuals throughout (characters, cinematics and environments, according to the PlayStation Blog). So, a bit of the new with the familiar.

Gone Home, the hit debut from The Fullbright Company, was supposed to be released for the Nintendo Switch today, but the launch has been delayed. Annapurna Interactive, the publisher bringing the game to the Switch, tweeted that the new launch date is now September 6th. So it's not that long of a wait, but still a bummer for those looking forward to it. Some good news could be on the way, though. The tweet teased that the company "might have some additional news to share" on the new release date.

If you weren't able to sign up for Arena of Valor's closed beta on the Nintendo Switch, don't worry -- the popular 5v5 MOBA will be officially available for the platform in September. Like its mobile counterpart, the Switch version of the Tencent-backed game is a free-to-play title. Even better, it will use a global server, so you can play with friends from around the world, even if they live in another continent and even if they download the game from another region's eShop.

What makes a good Switch game? The consensus seems to be something that isn't graphically demanding, has a quick gameplay loop or is easily played in bite-sized portions. Local multiplayer helps out a whole lot, too.

The best consoles and games to play in the dorm

    by

The last thing you want to do after spending hours staring at your laptop studying is spend more time staring at your laptop when you want to play a game or watch a movie. That's where game consoles come in. The Xbox One S starts at $244 on Amazon, while Microsoft regularly marks down the price of its entry-level system to around $200. In addition to being the place to play Halo and Gears of War, it's also an incredibly capable media machine thanks to its built-in UHD Blu-ray drive and support for HDR video. Plus, you might not have to spend any money on games for it: If you had a huge collection of digital games on the Xbox 360, Microsoft has made a swath of them playable on the One. It also means there are tons of used disc-based titles that will perform and play better on the Xbox as well. Specifically, the Red Dead Redemption Game of the Year Edition is the best example of what an old game can look like on new hardware. If you opt for the new route, it'll only set you back $20. When you consider how much there is to see and do Rockstar's open-world take on the Old West, it's a veritable circus of value. And really, what better way is there to get ready for the sequel which comes out in late October? If you're in the PlayStation camp but somehow still haven't picked up a PlayStation 4, give the $300 PS4 Slim a look. It's sleeker and quieter overall compared to the 2013 model, and it's the only place you can play this fall's incredibly promising Spider-man game. The new Greatest Hits program slashed the price on some of the system's best games, which can make your gaming dollar stretch even further. As good as those two consoles are, playing them between classes requires a trip back to your dorm. That's not the case with the Nintendo Switch. It's small and light enough to toss into your bag before leaving that you might not even feel it. Plus, it starts up and powers off quickly, making it easy to get back to the field you were clearing in Stardew Valley before English 256 started. By the time you get home for the day, you can slide the hybrid console into its dock and watch a few episodes of The Handmaid's Tale on Hulu before nodding off to sleep to your TV. Find all of our picks for console in our 2018 back-to-school guide and while you're there, check out our 100-plus picks in 13 other categories.

After Blizzard dropped an ominous Diablo hint on Twitter back in May, the franchise's community manager revealed in a video last week that multiple projects are in the works. One of those revelations was supposed to be unveiled tomorrow, but leaked info broke the news early: Diablo III is indeed coming to Switch and will include all currently-released content along with some Nintendo-themed extras. Best of all, it's got local offline co-op.

It seems like almost everything is getting ported to the Nintendo Switch. Next up are a pair of Ubisoft's internal UbiArt "indie" games, Child of Light and Valiant Hearts: The Great War. Like Kotaku notes, they're a bit older at this point having been released in 2014, but with how much of a runaway success the Switch has been, can you really blame Ubisoft here?

After today's Nintendo Direct, the company tweeted that a limited edition of the game will be available that includes one of these controllers along with an adapter to use it on the Switch.

'Castlevania' is coming to 'Super Smash Bros. Ultimate'

Nintendo just murdered Luigi during a livestream about Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Killing beloved characters is the point of Smash Bros., after all, and Nintendo took the opportunity to add two more to the list: Simon and Richter Belmont, stars of the Castlevania series. Richter is an echo fighter, using the same moves as Simon but with a different skin and some custom animations. They'll both be in the game when it lands on Nintendo Switch on December 7th.
