OnePlus will reveal its new phones on April 14th
OnePlus hasn't been able to keep a lid on its 8 series phones -- numerous details and photos have leaked over the past week. According to the spec sheets, the company has put most of its focus on the Pro model, which will feature wireless charging and an IP68 water-resistance rating -- features that have been noticeably absent from OnePlus' premium devices. We'll see if these rumors pan out on April 14th, when the company livestreams an event detailing the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro. Ahead of the unveiling, OnePlus is touting its new 120Hz screens, which could be a big jump in quality compared to older 90Hz ones, as well as its commitment to 5G connectivity.
OnePlus 8 Pro will reportedly include wireless charging and waterproofing
Despite their value proposition, OnePlus phones have long had two significant flaws: to date, they've never included an official water-resistance rating or support for wireless charging. As the cost of the company's devices has increased with each subsequent release, that's something that has started to irk people. But it looks like OnePlus will finally address those issues. Unfortunately, you may need to buy the company's most expensive device to get those features.
OnePlus talks about the 120Hz display for its next flagship phone
OnePlus is starting to dribble out details for its next phones, and it's starting with the feature you probably care about the most: the screen. The company's upcoming, Samsung-made 120Hz Fluid Display (not pictured) is faster than the 90Hz of the 7 series and thus better at handling motion, but that's just supposedly the start. The AMOLED panel packs a slew of custom design choices that might help it stand out against the ROG Phone 2 and those precious few other 120Hz handsets on the market.
Verizon will reportedly sell a 5G version of the OnePlus 8
When OnePlus releases its next phone later this year, you'll reportedly be able to buy it at not one but two major US carriers. According to Android Police, Verizon (Engadget's parent company) will sell a OnePlus device for the first time. Citing "a source familiar with the companies' plans," the website says the carrier will offer a 5G-capable version of the OnePlus 8, although it's currently unclear if Verizon will also sell the OnePlus 8 Pro.
Early OnePlus 8 leak hints at hole-punch display and wireless charging
The OnePlus 7T isn't even shipping yet, but that isn't stopping leaks about its inevitable sequel. Well-known tipster OnLeaks and CashKaro have posted what they say are renders of the OnePlus 8 based on schematics from a "company insider." The design suggests OnePlus is going back to a more conventional design on the back, but that it'll make some potentially welcome changes everywhere else. The 8 would have a roughly 6.5-inch curved display with a hole-punch spot for the camera, rather than the notch of the 7T or the pop-up selfie cam of the 7 Pro. It certainly wouldn't be the most original design, but it might represent an aesthetic upgrade from the 'plain' 7T.
