The first 'Destiny 2' expansion will reintroduce players to Osiris
If you've already finished Destiny 2's campaign and are grinding through the endgame, here's some news you might be interested in. The first expansion for developer Bungie's shared-world shooter is dubbed "Curse of Osiris," named for the infamous multiplayer mode from its prequel. This time 'round, it's a campaign expansion according to Polygon, and it takes place on Mercury where you'll "journey through time and space" to learn Osiris' (a legendary warlock) secrets and reunite him with Ikora Rey -- the warlock vanguard who gives you class-specific gear.
The latest 'South Park' game is hardest if you choose a black character
South Park writers Trey Parker and Matt Stone haven't ever really shied away from social commentary (president Donald Trump notwithstanding) and that doesn't look like it's changing with the upcoming South Park: The Fractured but Whole. When creating your character in the make-believe superhero game, Eurogamer discovered that the darker the skin tone you choose, the more the difficulty level ramps up. "Don't worry, this doesn't affect combat, just every other aspect of your life," perpetual jerk Eric Cartman says in voiceover.
'Katamari Damacy' creator's next game will be released in 2018
We noticed that Sony was taking a concerted step away from quirky indie games back at E3. One of the titles caught in the fray was Wattam, a charmer rom a few of the minds behind Katamari Damacy and Journey that made it debut at the first PlayStation Experience back in 2014. Sony's newfound reluctance toward indies left Funomena's debut title in a lurch, but PlayStation's loss is publisher Annapurna Interactive's gain. The game will drop is PlayStation 4 exclusivity and will be released next year on "console and PC."
‘Secret of Mana’ returning as a 3D remaster on PlayStation and PC
Next month, a horde of nostalgic Nintendo heads will get the chance to relive the Secret of Mana on the SNES Classic Edition. But, if you're a gamer with modern sensibilities, then its 16-bit world may not suffice. Fortunately for you, developer Square Enix is giving the iconic title the 3D treatment. An upgraded version of the JRPG is heading to the PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, and Steam next year.
Return to 'Smuggler's Run' in the next 'GTA: Online' expansion
For the next expansion to GTA: Online, Rockstar Games is looking to its past. "Smuggler's Run" will task you to move inventory for the perpetually paranoid Nervous Ron by land and air. "Smuggler's Run opens up the air corridors above Los Santos and Blaine Country, providing new business opportunities while introducing a range of planes, choppers and even ultralights as highly viable options for transporting criminal cargo across the state -- simultaneously opening up some creative new methods of dispatching any rival gangs along the way," a post on the Rockstar Newswire says.
'Assassin's Creed' is crossing over with 'Final Fantasy'
So this is weird: Square Enix and Ubisoft have announced that this month will mark the beginning of crossovers between Assassin's Creed and Final Fantasy. Yup, really. "This collaboration is the result of being huge fans," Ubisoft Montreal game driector Ashraf Ismail says on the UbiBlog. "There's a lot of respect between the two teams and we couldn't be more thrilled with the opportunity to pay homage to each other's work."
'The Sims 4 Cats & Dogs' promises biggest-ever pets expansion
In the close-to-three years since its release on PC, The Sims 4 has broken down gender barriers, freed itself from the shackles of the suburbs, and even found time to cater to Mac and console gamers. But, there's been something amiss from the lives of the digital denizens -- namely, pets. That's all about to change thanks to EA's latest update. On November 10, The Sims 4 Cats & Dogs expansion will let you add a dose of cuteness to your manufactured utopia.
‘EVE: Valkyrie’ won’t require VR come September
EVE: Valkyrie was one of the first games Oculus used to show off one of its Rift prototypes, and since 2014, the game has been associated exclusively with virtual reality. That's changing. The game's "Warzone" update will strip the VR headset requirement, allowing anyone with a PlayStation 4 or powerful enough PC to play the game. If you're keeping track at home, that means true cross-platform multiplayer is here; you'll be able to battle folks on HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, PC, PS4 and PSVR.
Blizzard preps aging 'Warcraft 3' multiplayer for future changes
So this is a bit strange: Over 15 years later, Blizzard has added a public test realm to its premier real-time strategy game, Warcraft 3. Overwatch (also made by Blizzard) fans know that the PTR is where experimental features and modes are tested before going wide to the full player population. In Warcraft's case, this is to test out new map pools for 1v1, 2v2, 3v3 and 4v4 multiplayer. Updates that address slow matchmaking, lag and that add automated tournaments and a "ladder board" are planned as well.
Cult classic 'Night Trap’ remaster limited to 5,000 physical copies
If you're keen to get your hands on the remake of Night Trap, you'll have to be quick. To build on its cult standing, the campy horror game will only be available in a limited run when it lands tomorrow. Physical versions of the game will be restricted to 2,000 copies on PC, and 3,000 copies for the PS4. A collector's edition, housed in an individually-numbered throwback case, will launch the same day for Sony's console. Priced at $55, it will also include a bunch of retro goodies, including a cassette tape with the game's theme song. Considering an original Night Trap poster can net over $200 on eBay, it may be a worthwhile investment for fans. But, with just 3,000 copies available, you'll have to snap it up fast. Xbox players, on the other hand, will have to settle for a digital edition, expected later in the fall. Steam and the PlayStation store, however, will get the game on August 15.
'Spelunky' and 'Downwell' creators have 50 games coming this fall
Good news if you and yours have long worn out Sportsfriends' appeal -- it's been a few years, so that's understandable -- and you're hankering for another collection of unique multiplayer games. Next year, the minds behind Spelunky, Downwell, Time Barons, Skorpulac and Madhouse have teamed to bring you UFO 50. "Our goal is to combine a familiar 8-bit aesthetic with new ideas and modern game design sensibilities," the game's website reads. That purview includes platformers, puzzle games, RPGs and shooters, for a total of, you guessed it, 50 different games.
Microsoft shrunk the Xbox One wireless controller adapter for PCs
Microsoft has a few new accessories on the way for Xbox One and PC gamers. Along with three new Wireless Controllers in Xbox 360-style Grey/Green, hot red Volcano Shadow, and Halo-esque Patrol Tech variants, the gaming company has announced a brand-new Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows 10, a little USB stick that's 66 percent smaller than the original. You can purchase the miniature adapter -- which lets you use an Xbox One controller on your PC -- for $25 on its own, or grab it as a bundle with the plain black controller for $80.
'Wolfenstein II' DLC adds three new Nazi-punching characters
You'll be playing as more than just the broken-schmeckled B.J. Blazkowicz in Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus. That's because the game's three expansions will feature a different protagonist fighting for America by punching and murdering the Nazis standing in their way.
'The Sims 4' will get weird on consoles November 17th
After an eight year absence, The Sims is coming back to consoles in a very big way. Come November 17th you'll be able to control a virtual society from the couch in The Sims 4 with what sounds the best console installment of the 17 year-old social sandbox series.
'Call of Duty: WWII' takes zombies back to the front lines
Zombie mode is back for Call of Duty: WWII, and developer Sledgehammer Games just dropped a trailer for the undead nightmare mode. Of course, you and your pals are tasked with eradicating the Nazi zombie scourge. The trailer's YouTube description is as follows:
Import your orcs from 'Shadow of Mordor' into the sequel
Your perfect orc enemy (and ally) from Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor are coming along for the ride in this fall's sequel, Shadow of War. Mordor has just gotten an update that adds the "Nemesis Forge" to the game that will import your personalized, highest-ranked orc captain and buddy into War once the game comes out October 10th. Now, this isn't automatic. Nor will it simply read your game save and do its trick, so you need to have the old game laying around if you want Grishnak the Red to inhabit War.
'PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds' official launch pushed back
Just a couple of days after guaranteeing that his popular online shooter would be officially released within six months of its Early Access preview, PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds creator Brendan Greene is backing off of that promise. Brendan Greene (to RockPaperShotgun): People tell us we're not going to be out of early access in six months; challenge accepted. I can guarantee you, six or seven months and we're out of early access. It's the team. It's a matter of honour, you know? We will finish this game in six months.
'Destiny 2' beta begins July 18th on consoles, hits PC in August
If you want to get your hands on Destiny 2 before it comes out this September 6th, Activision and developer Bungie have you covered. Folks who pre-ordered the game for PlayStation 4 can start playing July 18th, while everyone else on consoles will have to wait until July 21st. The test period runs until July 23rd and Bungie says that in addition a cooperative strike and adversarial multiplayer modes, the first story mission will be available to play as well. Folks who want to play with a mouse and keyboard have to wait until August for a PC beta. For a tease of what you can expect, check out the trailer embedded below.
'Rocket League' packs tons of freebies in its 'Anniversary' update
No, cross-console multiplayer isn't in today's Anniversary update for Rocket League. But thankfully there's enough (free!) stuff on offer here to take some of the sting off of Sony's sustained stubbornness. We're talking Rick and Morty customization options -- including a Mr. Poopy Butthole topper -- new music, fresh cars and the ability to change your ride's engine audio. Oh, there's a new stadium to tool around in as well. The update will start rolling out later today, at 6pm Eastern.
GTA modding tool quietly reappears after legal threats
The popular Grand Theft Auto V modding tool OpenIV now looks to be back in action, just weeks after its creators found themselves in a whole heap of legal trouble. Last month GTA publisher Take Two Interactive sent the creators of the modding software a cease and desist letter, claiming that the tool allowed users to bypass the game's security features and violated the publisher's rights. Unsurprisingly, this forced OpenIV to remove the mod's download link from its site on June 14th, resulting in a huge community backlash. Now, that link is back up and fans can once again download the modding tool directly from OpenIV's website.
