Uber's delivery business was a saving grace in a tough quarter
It’s fair to say that Uber’s business was challenged in a huge way by the 2020 coronavirus pandemic. Unsurprisingly, gross revenue from its “mobility” group dropped significantly compared to a year ago — $2.9 billion in mobility revenue represented a 53 percent year-over-year decline. Total revenue for the company across all its segments declined 18 percent year-over-year — a significant drop, but it’s undeniable that Uber Eats kept that loss from being much more significant.

Food delivery apps, the pandemic and finding a new normal
Like the rest of the world, because of the coronavirus outbreak, the restaurant industry is in the midst of a serious reckoning. As of writing, 23 American states have shut down restaurants except for takeout and delivery. In the UK, McDonald's has completely closed every location, including takeout and delivery. Despite campaigns like Tuesday's nationwide hashtag #thegreatamericantakeout, urging consumers to order takeout from local restaurants, many are shuttering for good. Even delivery logistics are proving a challenge, as illustrated by the large, non-socially distanced crowds assembled outside of Carbone in New York City, waiting for comfort food to go.
Uber encourages drivers in the US to do food delivery
Uber is not-so-subtly pushing its drivers towards doing food deliveries. Last week, the company started sending drivers in the US an in-app notification with instructions on how to toggle between Driver and Delivery views. As Uber Eats VP Pierre-Dimitri Gore-Coty said on Twitter, the coronavirus outbreak changed people's routines. Drivers' incomes are affected by shelter-in-place orders issued to limit COVID-19's impact, and deliveries are now more in demand.

Uber Eats' delivery drone is a VTOL speedster
An unmanned aerial system capable of vertical take-off and landing might transport your Uber Eats orders in the future. The ride-hailing company, which has been expanding its repertoire recently, has unveiled a new design for its food delivery drone at the Forbes 30 under 30 Summit. Uber's drone design has rotating wings with six rotors "for increased speed and efficiency" and can carry meals for up to two people. Its battery can only last for around eight minutes, including loading and unloading, and it only has a range of 12 miles for a roundtrip delivery -- but that's OK, because Uber expects to use it for just a part of the process.

Uber has started experimenting with a new feature that could eventually rival Airbnb's Experiences. Moments exists as an option within the Eats app, and it focuses on dining and cooking experiences -- two of the first available options is reportedly $75 class on making Chinese dumplings and a $55 five-course Nigerian dinner.
