Toshiba outs Tecra R940 and R950 for small business set, prices start at $600
Last month, Toshiba gave its Tecra line the Ivy Bridge treatment, outing the enterprise-focused R940 and R950 with fingerprint readers and the Smart Client Manager. Today it circled back to give smaller businesses something new, though the company confusingly chose the same naming scheme for its more budget-priced Tecra machines. Not to be confused with the corporate crowd's Tecra R940 and R950, these two models are available only through ToshibaDirect, and they forgo some of the higher-end business security features like the fingerprint reader to keep the price down. The 14-inch Tecra R940 starts at $600 and can be configured with a third-gen Intel CPU, optional AMD dedicated graphics and up to 16GB of RAM. The 15.6-inch Tecra R950 also goes for $600 and up, and both laptops can be configured with 320GB hard drives all the way up to 512GB SSDs. Toshiba refreshes its Portege and Tecra lines, prices start at $1,179
We've been hearing a ton about budget- and student-friendly Ivy Bridge laptops, but business notebooks are most definitely getting a refresh too. Today Toshiba unveiled its latest systems from the Portege and Tecra lines, all of which feature Intel's third-gen processors along with security features like a fingerprint reader and Toshiba Smart Client Manager for remotely keeping track of laptops on a network. On the Portege side of things, we have the Z930 Ultrabook and the R930 (read more about the Ultrabook here). The R930 sports a 13.3-inch screen and weighs 3 pounds, which is substantial enough to allow for an optical drive. Toshiba will offer the notebook with Core i5 and Core i7 Ivy Bridge CPUs, and the extended battery is rated for up to 14 hours. The base configuration of this Portege will go for $1,399, and it's available as of today. Toshiba's new Tecra systems are slightly larger, which the company says is preferred in the corporate world. The $1,199 Tecra R940 has a 14-inch display and a 2MP webcam, and it also offers discrete graphics. The notebook ships with either a Core i5 or Core i7 Ivy Bridge processor. The $1,179 Tecra R50 is quite similar in specs, the main difference being a larger 15-inch screen and a full 10-key keypad. Along with the Portege R930, these two laptops are on the market starting today.
Toshiba puts its business laptops on a diet, intros the Portege R830, Tecra R840, and Tecra R850
Toshiba's thin-but-full-powered Portege R700 was such a hit among business types that the company is now designing other machines in its svelte image. Tosh just unveiled the Tecra R840 and R850 -- both of which ape the R700's slim build -- along with the Portege R830, a refresh to the R700 itself. The R830 looks the same, though it has a strip on the edge of the lid that looks like it's made of magnesium alloy, but is actually plastic -- a material that's expected to improve the signals of the the various antennae housed underneath it. And -- surprise, surprise -- this refresh adds a USB 3.0 port and Intel Sandy Bridge processor, which the company says should bump the rated battery life to a max of 11 hours, up from eight. Not the corporate type? The company will also sell an $889 consumer version, the R835, that has a one-, not three-year, warranty, and loses enterprise-grade features -- namely, Intel's vPro technology, a docking connector, and an ExpressCard slot. Meanwhile, the 14-inch R840 and 15.6-inch R850 are also getting Sandy Bridge CPUs, USB 3.0 ports, chiclet keyboards and all-around trimmer silhouettes. These laptops are now made with fiberglass-reinforced casing and the same Honeycomb rib structure that made last year's R700 sturdy enough to grab one-handed. Of the two, the R840's slim-down is more dramatic: it's 25 percent thinner than the last-generation Tecra M11, as you can see in the comparison shots past the break. That's largely thanks to Intel's Airflow Cooling technology, which rearranges all of the heat-generating components in a row and draws in cool air from outside the notebook, instead of within. And Tosh claims the battery can last up to ten hours on a charge (11 with an SSD) -- a vast improvement over the five and a half to six hours it promised the last time around. Moving up in size to the R850 will get you a number pad, but not that cooling technology. But it is about an inch thick at its thinnest, a point the PC maker is pleased as punch about. Toshiba crams Core i3, i5 and i7 options into business-like Tecra M11
There's no mistaking the fact that this understated machine is aimed primarily at those rocking suits more often than pajamas, but just because the all-new Tecra M11's outfit ain't flashy, that doesn't mean there's not a party raging on the inside. In an effort to keep with the times, Toshiba has equipped its newest spreadsheet warrior with Intel's Core i3, Core i5 and Core i7 processors, and just in case your company has yet to evolve its operating system, a copy of WinXP is thrown in alongside Windows 7. Other specs include up to 3GB of DDR3 RAM, integrated Intel HD graphics (or an NVIDIA NVS 2100M on the $1,229 model), a 320GB hard drive (7,200rpm), dual-layer DVD writer and a 14-inch LED backlit panel (1,366 x 768). You'll also get a webcam, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, WiFi, audio in / out, an ExpressCard slot and a three-year warranty, all for the low, low starting price of $899. Toshiba Portege M780 highlights business laptop refresh to Core i-series CPUs
For some among us, the VAIO E series is the pinnacle of modern mobile computing design. Then there are other, saner individuals, who prefer the understated aesthetics of what are commonly termed business laptops. For that latter group, we have a whole glut of new Toshiba notebooks to look at, highlighted by the delectable looking Portege M780 above. Much in the vein of HP's 2730p, it's a 12.1-inch convertible tablet PC, with a spill-resistant keyboard and rugged features (tested to withstand drops from up to 1 meter), but its biggest attraction will still likely be the Core i5 heart thumping inside. Also undergoing upgrades are the Tecra A11 (already available in the US), M11 and S11, which will come with up to 8GB of RAM, 802.11n wireless, SSD options, and of course Intel Core i7 CPUs. Check them out after the break, and expect them to arrive in Europe, the Middle East and Africa this quarter, with the M780 close behind them with a Q2 2010 release.
Toshiba ships Tecra A11, Core i7-packin' Qosmio X500 and more
These didn't quite make it off the boat before CES, but if it's a new Toshiba laptop you've been searching for, you can still get some satisfaction before the end of this month. The outfit has just announced that four of its machines are available in the US starting right this very moment, including the 15.6-inch Tecra A11 (starts at $879). This one packs an integrated numpad, NVIDIA GPU, an undisclosed new Intel CPU and a charcoal black chassis. Moving on, that Qosmio X500 workhorse that we first heard about late last year finally has its shipping papers (and a $1,549 starting point), bringing with it a Core i7-720QM processor, a GeForce GTS 360M GPU, 8GB of memory, an 18.4-inch display, 500GB (7200RPM) hard drive, a Blu-ray drive and a vivacious color scheme that's guaranteed to polarize. The Satellite Pro L450 and Satellite Pro L500 are also slipping out to the suits in attendance, but with price tags starting at $529, the spec hounds probably won't be drooling much here.
Toshiba Tecra A10, M10 laptops now available
Because you can never have too many Tecra laptops in your life, Toshiba's announced that the A10-S3511 and M10-S3411 are currently making their way through retail channels. Both PCs sport a 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo P8600 processors, 2GB DDR2 SDRAM, 160GB HDD, built-in webcam, WiFi, Bluetooth, Toshiba's EasyGuard technology, a Li-on battery that's expected to last just under 3 hours per charge, and Windows Vista Business with media to downgrade it to XP Professional. As for their differences, the A10's has a 15.4-inch screen with WSXGA+ resolution, NVIDIA's Quadro NVS, a 7200rpm disk speed, and a shiny new $1249 price tag,while the M10's got a 14.1-inch TFT LCD with WXGA+ resolution, an Intel GM45 integrated graphics chip, a 5400rpm disk speed, and a $1100 asking price, which is a bit lower than what we heard back in July. Toshiba keeps 'em coming with Tecra R10 / Portege A600
Toshiba's new bounty is all but out there, but we've still got two more to bring you before the onslaught is over. Up first is the business-minded Tecra R10 (shown after the break), which shows vitals of 4.4-pounds and 1.13-inches thick. It also provides upwards of 5-hours of battery life on a single charge, an Intel Centrino 2 CPU, NVIDIA's 128MB Quadro NVS GPU, 14.1-inch LED-backlit display, ExpressCard slot, USB Sleep-and-Charge / eSATA combo port and a price tag starting at $1,549. On deck, we've got the 12.1-inch Portégé A600, which offers up a Centrino 2 processor and 7.5-hours of claimed battery life while weighing just 3.2-pounds and measuring 1.18-inches thick. Toshiba intros four new Portege machines, Tecra R10
The last Portégé we saw flow from Toshiba's doors was a revamped R500 in July, but now we know why we've been waiting so long for a true new member of the family. Clearly, Tosh has been shoring 'em up, waiting for this day to arrive when it would introduce four newcomers in one fell swoop. Starting us off is the ultrathin Portégé R600, which packs your choice of a Core 2 Duo CPU, 2.14-pound shell, a battery good for nine hours and a price tag ranging between $1,499 and $3,299. The Portégé A600 includes most of the same specs along with a GMA X4500 graphics controller and a more pedestrian price; the Portégé M750 Tablet PC adds in that always-exciting swivel action for those who care. Lastly, we've got the Tecra R10, which features a 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo SP9400, 4GB of DDR2 RAM, 200GB 7,200 RPM hard drive, NVIDIA Quadro NVS 150M GPU and an MSRP of $1,999. Toshiba announces Centrino 2-based Satellite Pro S300, Tecra M10 and Tecra A10
Get ready for a flood of Centrino 2 laptops, kids -- hot on the heels of Intel's big announcement and Sony and Lenovo's updated lineups comes Toshiba with the new Satellite Pro S300, Tecra M10 and A10, and Qosmio X305, F55 and Cell-based G55. The Qosmios actually aren't that new -- all three of them were initially announced back in June, but they're actually available now, with the gaming-oriented X305 exclusive to Best Buy. The $1,299 Satellite Pro S300 (pictured) is a little more interesting, with a 2.4GHz P8600 Core 2 Duo on Centrino 2's 1066MHz bus and Intel 4500MD integrated graphics powering a 15.4-inch display, as well as sleep-and-charge USB ports and a docking port. The more business-oriented Tecra lappies also get a similar Centrino 2 treatment, sharing a motherboard design to reduce repair costs. The $1,399 M10 sports a 14.1-inch screen, while the 15.4-inch A10's pricing hasn't been announced. Toshiba's Tecra M9 laptop to get HSDPA?
Granted, nothing looks to be set in stone just yet, but if FCC documentation leads to results, Toshiba's Tecra M9 could be getting HSDPA. Apparently, the FCC has tested a version of the lappie with a WWAN module built right in, and more specifically, the test reports show that a module manufactured by Tyco Electronics is the culprit. The "CDMA Cell-PCS Module" reportedly supports GSM 850/1900, GPRS, EGPRS, WCDMA 850/1900, and WCDMA+HSDPA, and while we've no idea when these newly-equipped machines will be launching, it ought not be long now.[Via PCJoint]
Toshiba recalls yet another batch of Sony batteries
In the latest development to the story that never seems to die, Toshiba has issued a recall on yet another batch of Sony-made batteries, with the latest offenders having shipped in Satellite A100 and A105 and Tecra A7 models sold between January and April of last year. Although there are only about 1,400 affected packs, this is the third recall by Toshiba since the whole unfortunate matter began, with the company's total now standing at 851,400 by our count -- and that's not including the 300,000-some they recalled for an unrelated power issue, also last year. C'mon guys, it's been almost a year since Dell got the ball rolling on this thing (and nearly as long since Sony promised an end to the fiasco); let's get it sorted already, yeah?
Toshiba's 14-inch Tecra X9 shown in Paris
Toshiba sure is stealing the rays in the City of Light, as the outfit is showcasing yet another up and coming laptop in the Tecra X9. Not quite as flashy as the X200 nor R500 situated nearby, this 14-incher is destined for the hands of workaholics who aren't looking for high-end graphics performance and ultra-mobility. The black / silver color scheme seems attractive enough, and the built-in fingerprint reader ought to keep your manager's nerves at ease. Judging by the looks of it, you'll also get a number of USB 2.0 ports, 4-pin FireWire, a flash card reader, VGA output, and a DVD burner to boot, but the internals remain a mystery for now. Toshiba intros 13.3-inch Tecra M8 laptop
If Toshiba's just announced 12.1-inch Portege R500 laptop is a tad too small for you, you may want to consider the company's new Tecra M8, which packs a 13.3-inch widescreen display into a slightly heftier package (4.5 pounds). Apart from that bump up in size, you'll get a 1.8GHz T7100 Core 2 Duo processor, Intel's GM965 Express chipset, 1GB of RAM, a 120GB hard drive, a DVD SuperMulti drive, Intel Turbo Memory, 802.11n WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0, and an integrated 1.3 megapixel webcam, among other features. Build-to-order models will also apparently be available in the "near future," but if you want one now it looks like you'll have to settle for the default configuration, which'll set you back $1,399.

While it may pale in comparison to the slew of laptops that HP just dropped on us, Toshiba's batch of just-announced systems is certainly respectable enough, including a pair of new Tecras, some updated Satellites, and the desktop-replacin' Qosmio G45. Up first, the Tecra A9 and M9 are aimed squarely at the business set, with each boasting similar unassuming designs and both based on Intel's Centrino Pro platform (otherwise known as Santa Rosa). Opting for the A9 will get you a 15.4-inch widescreen display, along with a T7100 Core 2 Duo processor, 1GB of RAM, an 80GB hard drive, a DVD super multi drive, built-in Bluetooth, and integrated 802.11a/b/g WiFi. The M9, on the other hand, packs a slightly smaller 14.1-inch display but ups the processor to a T7500, along with the same 1GB of RAM, a 120GB hard drive, NVIDIA Quadro NVS 130 graphics, and built-in 802.11a/g/n WiFi. Look for it to set you back $1,799, while the A9's somewhat lighter on your bank account, demanding just $1,159. While they're pretty light on details, Toshiba has also announced that its updating its Satellite P205 and A205 to the Centrino Duo platform, and it's teasing us with its do-it-all Qosmio G45 laptop, which we expect won't be too different from already-announced Q40.
