YouTube reinstates accounts of Markiplier fans banned for emote spam

YouTube's occasionally questionable moderation is once again in the spotlight, and this time the victims are particularly prominent. The service says it has reinstated legions of Markiplier fans' accounts after they were banned simply for spamming emotes (and not even to a great degree) while voting during a live playthrough of the interactive movie A Heist with Markiplier. Not all of the accounts have been restored, Markiplier said, but YouTube added that it was "looking into" both why human moderators denied appeals and how it might "prevent this in the future."

If you're a livestreamer determined to stand out from the pack with flashy effects, Razer has your back. It's introducing a Seiren Emote microphone whose 8x8 LED screen displays (what else?) emotes in sync with Twitch and Mixer stream events, including through common tools like Streamlabs and XSplit. You can display a custom channel emote when someone subscribes, a puking rainbow emote when someone thanks you in chat, or seemingly anything in between. It'll even sync with Chroma-compatible gear, so your mic can go berserk alongside your Hue lights and headphones if you're so inclined.

Fortnite’s legal battles probably won’t result in big payouts

As Fortnite continues its astronomical rise, the legal troubles keep piling on for its developer, Epic Games. With more than 200 million players on Fortnite: Battle Royale (which reportedly earned over $1 billion in 2018), the title isn't just a cultural phenomenon -- it's also a serious cash cow. And, as the great Notorious B.I.G. once said, "mo' money, mo' problems." For Epic, those problems have been caused by Fortnite's Emotes, a collection of real-world-inspired dance moves that players can use with their avatar in the game.

Epic uses a free 'Fortnite' dance to encourage two-factor authentication

As Fortnite's popularity has grown, player's accounts have become targets for attackers who want to steal access and run up fake charges. One way to combat this is by enabling two-factor authentication that requires a generated code or emailed link for login in addition to the user's password, but as we've seen on other services, not everyone turns it on. Epic Games has a solution though, by offering a free emote to players who enable two-factor on their accounts.

  • The new 'Destiny' emotes might just be worth buying

I won't blame you if you're skeptical of Bungie's plan to add purchasable emotes to Destiny on October 13th. Would you really want to pay for a canned animation? If some early previews are any indication, though, the answer might well be "yes." Some of the expressions are a bit cliché, if fun (like the "come at me, bro" emote you see above). However, there are some proper gems in there, including nods to The Matrix and a certain Fresh Prince of Bel Air star. It's doubtful that the market for these Destiny emotes will be as big as that for, say, Team Fortress 2 hats -- you may buy something once to personalize your Guardian, and that's that. Even so, this idea doesn't seem quite as dubious as it did a week earlier. [Image credit: Arekkz Gaming, YouTube]

  • The Daily Grind: What NPC ability would you like to have?

I'm pretty content with my avatar in The Elder Scrolls Online. He looks cool, he's a badass with a crazy amount of useful combat and crafting skills, and he has a tremendous singing voice. One thing he can't do, however, is lean back and flip a coin like the NPC in the image up there. ESO does feature a couple of nifty wall-leaning emotes and plenty of other appealing fluff. But I want a coin and I want people to see me flipping it, dammit! What about you, Massively readers? Is there a certain NPC ability you crave for your character? The Elder Scrolls Online has just wrapped up its Emote Creation Contest, naming Trevor Baggett as the winner. Trevor's concept was a twin set of emotions for PvP, one to desecrate an annoying foe's corpse and one to honor a well-fought match. He'll be working with ZeniMax's animators to implement the emotes into the game. Over a hundred fans submitted their own emote ideas, and along with Trevor, a few others will receive prize packages for their efforts. If you've got a chunk of time and like to see people going into great depth about emotes, check out the YouTube playlist for the contest after the break. [Thanks to Jon for the tip!]

Don't overthink it. What's your favorite emote? Are you partial to /dance whenever you have a moment of downtime with friends? Do you /faint whenever a cute character walks by? • Hyperspace Beacon: Roleplaying conflict in SWTOR

Like many of you, I'm eagerly awaiting the launch of Update 1.5 for Star Wars: The Old Republic, which will hopefully happen next week. Although I have been on the test server and tried out the new content, I don't want to give my impressions until it's officially launched. So this week, I've decided to address an issue I've seen crop up more and more in the roleplay community that has nothing to do with the pending game update. In any good story, there is conflict -- physical, interpersonal, or otherwise. In MMO roleplay, a good chunk of conflict turns physical. After all, most of our characters are highly skilled warriors and other combat specialists, and physical conflict is the natural course. That means that roleplayers then have to be highly skilled at PvP if their characters are to be highly skilled, too, right? Don't get me wrong, I love PvP, but this supposition always rubbed me the wrong way, especially in a game like TOR where there is a large disparity between PvE skills and PvP. So what kinds of physical conflict resolutions are there if it's not straight-up PvP? And doesn't the dueling system in TOR limit itself to one-on-one dueling? How do you resolve that issue? Excellent questions. I'm glad you asked. Let's dive in.

What's the most important thing about next week's launch of Guild Wars 2? Is it deciding which race/gender/profession combo you'll make for your main? Is it deciding which server you'll play on? Or is it figuring out which dance emote looks best on your character? Thanks to our own livestreamer extraordinaire, Richie Procopio, we have a look at each race's and gender's dance emotes in the game, which were just introduced with yesterday's stress test patch. Skip past the cut below to see the fun little video for yourself -- all in glorious HD! Even a Bookah like you knows that Guild Wars 2 is on the way, but it takes an Asura's intellect, a Human's charm, a Sylvari's wisdom, a Charr's passion, and a Norn's love of strong mead to dive into beta and make sense of a game this complex. Fortunately, we have all five on the Massively staff. Enjoy our previews, guides, and our weekly GW2 column, Flameseeker Chronicles!

  • SOEmote tracks our face, transplants our expressions onto an Everquest II persona (faces-on)

Sony's PlayStation division may have been the main focus this week at E3, but Sony Online Entertainment has something unique of its own to show off for MMORG players. Specifically, folks who are into the PC title Everquest II will soon be able to access a facial recognition feature called SOEmote (S-O Emote). It's no secret that these types of games require massive amounts of communication between players, and SOEmote is an attempt to make in-game conversations more personal than ever. Utilizing any webcam, the software is able map and track your noggin at 64 points, allowing your onscreen character to replicate any facial movements you make. We got a chance to mess around with a beta version of the software, and the results are impressive to say the least -- pretty much all of our facial expressions were accurately recreated. Join us past the break for more details and a hands-on faces-on video demo of it in action. %Gallery-157578%

  • Breakfast Topic: What's your favorite emote in WoW?

    by

I asked recently whether people agreed with me in my dislike of the emote /spit and got an interesting yet mixed response. A couple of responders mentioned that they'd like to see another emote in WoW -- and funny enough, I agreed with them! The amount of times I've absentmindedly typed /tongue, expecting to have my character stick their tongue out at my target ... and these commenters said they would like that included as well! I'd love that. To be positive rather than negative, what's your favorite emote in the game? I warn you now, I will shake my head disapprovingly at anyone who says it's /spit. However, like another commenter, I'll probably type /shake and end up shaking my rear at you instead! I reckon my favorite emote would be either /violin or /cower. I find /violin hilarious for some reason, and I enjoy the animation that goes with /cower, especially because it seems to be one of those that lasts until you move. You can /lol in the middle of a /cower, and you'll take a brief pause from cowering to laugh, then go right back to it! Simple things please simple minds, right? And if you're looking for inspiration, here's a list of all the emotes in the game.

Emotes are ... well ... efficient. See that picture up there? It clearly communicates to you, the viewer, that this noble individual is involved in a thoroughly arduous task of navigation. Truly, William Rand and Andrew McNally would weep with joy. Unfortunately, before the lovely /map emote was added as part of patch 4.1, the last time new emotes were added to the game was as part of the Wrath of the Lich King expansion pack. That was more than three years ago. Personally, I'm a big fan of NCIS, and I would love a /headslap animation. What do you think? What new emotes should be added (keep it clean!)? Editor's Note: WTB /doublefacepalm, for when one /facepalm just isn't enough.
