Samsung seems to have weathered 2020 without too many issues, and with the year nearly over, the company has started talking about its path forward. In a blog post published this morning, Samsung smartphone chief TM Roh looked back at the year that was, but -- more importantly -- he also confirmed a few key updates to the company's mobile strategy going into the new year. Perhaps his juiciest confirmation is that Samsung plans to bring some of the Galaxy Note's "most well-loved features" to other devices in the Galaxy line-up.

It's the finest foldable I've used yet, and Samsung deserves credit for ironing out many of the issues that plagued the original. The thing you need to keep in mind, though, is that while the hardware is miles better than it used to be, the ecosystem around it still has a long way to go.

The Galaxy Note 20 and Note 20 Ultra may already be in the company's rear-view mirror, but today it plans to talk about the new Galaxy Z Fold 2 in much greater detail than it did at Unpacked in August, and we're going to discuss those revelations live as they happen.

Samsung will give the Galaxy Z Fold 2 a proper unveiling on September 1st

Toward the end of its last Unpacked press conference, Samsung spent a surprising amount of time talking about its new Galaxy Z Fold 2 before promising more detail on September 1st. Now, the company has made those plans more concrete: Rather than a news dump or PR blast, Samsung will stage a streamed event at 10AM Eastern/7AM Pacific that day to focus on the foldable. In years past, such an announcement would've been made on the ground at the IFA trade show in Berlin, but continued concerns over the novel coronavirus pandemic forced Samsung to back out of the event in July.

Samsung’s next virtual Unpacked event is just over a week away, but we have a pretty good idea of what to expect already. The company already said it would reveal five devices on August 5th, and a teaser video Samsung dropped today shows off silhouettes of the five devices in question. If we had to guess, we’re looking at the Galaxy Tab S7, Galaxy Buds Live, Galaxy Watch 3, a new Galaxy Fold and the Galaxy Note 20.

In an effort to make its next flagship foldable more accessible, Samsung will offer its Galaxy Fold successor in two storage configurations, according to SamMobile. On the surface, that seems like the first realistic rumor we've heard about the Galaxy Fold 2. SamMobile has also had a relatively strong track record in recent months reporting on Samsung.

Samsung unveiled three flagships this week: the S20, S20+ and S20 Ultra. It also showed off a new foldable called the Z Flip, which honestly looks and feels far superior to the incredibly similar Motorola Razr. That's four entirely new handsets that the company just unleashed.

Samsung Electronics has named Roh Tae-moon CEO of its key smartphone division, according to Bloomberg. He'll take over the position from DJ Koh, who will continue to head up Samsung's IT and mobile and communication arms. Roh is Samsung's third CEO in the last dozen years, as Koh was appointed in 2015 while Koh's predecessor JK Shin held the job for around six years.

Samsung experienced a few missteps in the release of its first folding smartphone: The original release date was pushed back due to durability issues with the plastic screen (including users peeling off a protective layer) and, even after its redesign, there are still concerns about durability. Users have debated whether the high-profile handset is a clunky, but necessary, step on the path to a true folding phone or an expensive niche gadget that only an early adopter could love.

The Galaxy Fold lives. I don't just mean in the vague "Samsung bounces back from a fiasco" sense, either. My Galaxy Fold, which I've been tossing around for weeks, opening and closing it like a madman, mostly works the same as it did the day I unboxed it. Had the Fold failed again the way it did earlier this year, it might have been enough to seriously derail Samsung's grand, foldable ambitions. This review would've been totally different, too. I could've gotten on my high horse and said a few things about innovation at the expense of usability, with a dash of pro-consumer indignation to spice things up a bit. It would've been a fun read. But reality can be pretty banal sometimes. Because of that, we instead have to face a more complicated truth about the Galaxy Fold: You shouldn't buy one. Not because it's expensive or because of its long-term potential for failure, although those are valid concerns. No, you shouldn't buy one because it's just not quite as thoroughly thought-out as a $2,000 phone should be. When I wrote our original review, I said that people who did splurge on one were paying for the privilege of being Samsung's guinea pig. Despite the company's thoughtful design fixes, that simply hasn't changed.

iFixit pulled its first Galaxy Fold teardown after Samsung scrapped the phone's April launch to improve its durability. Now that the foldable has finally reached stores, though, it's ready for take two. The DIY repair site has posted a teardown for the revised Galaxy Fold that reveals both the known innards and, crucially, the additional protections for that folding screen.
