Portrait Light effects in Google Photos come to older Pixel phones

Pixel 4a 5G review: Good, but you can do even better
Google is bucking the $1,000 phone trend, and I’m here for it. The company’s Pixel 4a received nearly universal acclaim earlier this year, if only because that $350 price tag was impossible to argue with. The 4a 5G in particular is basically a slightly stretched-out 4a with a second camera and, well, a 5G radio.
Google Photos for Android has a powerful new editor
To start, Google plans to augment its already useful image auto-enhance feature with machine learning algorithms that can further improve those enhancements based on the specific image you’re working on. The company is also offering an AI-based lighting feature, dubbed Portrait Light, that can apply varying levels and differing positions of light and shadow to a photo you’ve already taken.

Months after the Android 11 beta was released in June, the final version is finally here and ready to roll out to consumer devices.
Android 11 review: An incremental update that needs some polish
And, honestly I found the lock screen controls more convenient. Obviously I haven’t used Android 11 long enough for that to happen yet, but I appreciate it in theory. Android 11 is here, three months after the first public beta was released in June.
Google's Pixel 5 may be boring, and that's not a bad thing
Plus, Google has proven time and again that through smart software optimization it can squeeze great performance out of lesser devices. Just one model that will come with a 6-inch OLED -- which is smack in the middle of the 6.3 inch screen of the Pixel 4 XL and the 5.8 inch screen on the Pixel 4A.
Google is done with the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL
The Pixel 4 and 4 XL will soon be hard to come by. A Google spokesperson told The Verge that the Google Store has "sold through its inventory" and "completed sales of Pixel 4 [and] Pixel 4 XL." At the time of writing, though, it's still possible to buy the regular Pixel 4 from Google's Store, provided you're willing to use the company's Fi network.
How Google made its newest Pixel phone so cheap
When Google released the Pixel 3a and 3a XL, they were pretty good deals -- you could pay as little as $399 for a phone with the same clean software and excellent camera performance as the company’s earlier, more premium devices. The strategy paid off: Google sold 3 million Pixel 3a phones in its first two quarters on the market, compared to just 2 million Pixel 4s in the same amount of time. To help replicate that success, Google made the new Pixel 4a even cheaper: There's just one version, and it costs $349.
Pixel 4a review: The best $350 phone
Now that Google has launched the Pixel 4a (at last) for just $350, I might actually be convinced: the time for midrange phones to reign is nigh. When I picked up the Pixel 4a, my first thought was “Wait, does this thing have a case on?” The soft-touch coating on the back felt foreign, since I’m used to phones with glossier finishes. In fact, the Pixel 4a is as sturdy and well-made as the Pixel 4.
Google's long-awaited Pixel 4a goes on sale August 20th for $350
After a months-long delay and a steady stream of leaks, Google's Pixel 4a is finally here. Google focused most of its resources on developing a single version of the Pixel 4a, and thanks to its 5.8-inch OLED screen, it physically splits the difference between last year's Pixel 3a and 3a XL. As all those rumors suggested, the 4a looks cleaner than earlier models because Google went with a hole-punch display, rather than clutter things up with foreheads, chins, and notches.
Google's Live Caption feature for Pixel phones now supports calls
Google’s Live Caption tool is not only an important accessibility feature, but it’s also useful in noisy environments like a bar or a subway station. It’s available on Pixel phones and computers through the Chrome browser, and will provide onscreen subtitles for any media that plays audio on your device. With today’s launch of the Pixel 4a, though, Google is unveiling Live Caption for Calls and it’ll be available on the Pixel 2, 3, 3a, 4 and 4a.

Android 11 beta hands-on: More controls, more clutter
Which is strange, given it appears to support Android Messages in Google’s own animated image showing off the new feature. But I did get a chance to see Google’s new suggested row of apps.
Google brings personal safety and battery updates to Pixels
The most timely of these is the rollout of the Pixel 4’s Personal Safety app to all Pixel devices. Google is also adding a Safety Check tool that lets you schedule a check-in from the app at a later time.

B&H Photo Video is selling the Pixel 3a XL unlocked for $350 -- that’s a $130 savings.
