Capcom pulls in-game ads from 'Street Fighter V'

Were you less than thrilled with Capcom throwing ads into Street Fighter V? You'll be glad to hear that they're gone, at least for now. Polygon and others have noticed that Sponsored Content ads have disappeared from both the "ad-style" costumes (which remain available) and the stages themselves. The company hasn't explained the move, but series producer Yoshinori Ono said in mid-December that the team was "collecting everyone's feedback" on Sponsored Content.

'Street Fighter V' will display in-game ads starting December 11th

Fighting game fans are used to seeing ads in tournaments, but now they're infiltrating the games themselves. Capcom is introducing "sponsored content" to Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition on December 11th to promote its purchasable bundles, costumes and the Pro Tour. You'll see them on costumes, in certain stages and on pre-fight loading screens. This isn't concerning by itself (many real sports have ads, after all), but Capcom goes out of its way to discourage you from turning the ads off.

EVO 2018 lineup adds 'Dragon Ball FighterZ'

This year's EVO, arguably the biggest fighting game tournament, will feature eight titles in Las Vegas this year, including established favorites like Street Fighter 5, Tekken 7 and Super Smash Bros. Melee. Capcom's Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, however, will not be making an appearance this time. The series has regularly appeared at the tournament, but the newest addition apparently hasn't made the cut. Don't worry though, in its place there are new games!

‘Final Fight’ boss Abigail to join ‘Street Fighter V’ roster

The EVO 2017 championship -- which is the premier, annual tournament for fighting games -- took place this weekend. The event culminated in the Street Fighter V finals, which saw Japanese god Tokido battle through the loser's bracket with his signature Akuma to defeat American Karin main Punk and take this year's title. That wasn't all the crowd had to be hyped about, though, with Capcom using the occasion to reveal the next SFV DLC character and first addition from the Final Fight franchise: Comically oversized brawler Abigail.

If you don't have any plans to go outside this weekend, here's something you can do. The EVO 2017 fighting game championships, which feature titles including Street Fighter V and Super Smash Bros., are kicking off today, with the finals set to take place on Sunday, July 16th. You can stream most of the action via Evo's Twitch channels (the main one is embedded below), as well as others like CapcomFighters, Tekken and NetherRealm. And, similar to last year, you'll be able to watch the Street Fighter and Super Smash Bros. finals on TV thanks to ESPN2 and Disney XD, respectively. Sure, you'd probably rather be in Las Vegas watching the competition live, but at least you'll be more comfortable this way.

  • 'Street Fighter V' will publicly humiliate rage quitters (update)

When Capcom said it was planning tougher penalties for rage quitters in Street Fighter V, it wasn't joking around. NeoGAF users have discovered that a briefly available PC test release of the game includes a badge that will identify users who are more likely to quit matches in mid-play -- as Polygon observes, it's basically a scarlet letter for fighting games. You'd get another icon if you always stay through the end of a match, too, so you would have an easier time finding players who are just as trustworthy as you are.

Each year that Geoff Keighley's Game Awards distances itself from its SpikeTV past, it gets subsequently less embarrassing to watch. And without a doubt, The Game Awards 2016 was the best show yet. Couldn't watch the stream? Well, that's too bad, but we've got you covered. Below you'll find a list of the night's big winners in addition to all the trailers that made their world premieres onstage at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. There were a few emotional moments onstage as well, including Ryan Green accepting the Games for Impact award for That Dragon, Cancer; Keighley presenting his friend Hideo Kojima with a statue for Industry Icon and Nolan North throwing striking voice actors under the bus during his acceptance speech for best performance.

Bulldog-faced bad-asss, and Street Fighter regular, Akuma is joining the Street Fighter V roster. The latest DLC character addition will be playable for the first time at PlayStation Experience on December 3rd at the Anaheim Center, as part of this year's Capcom Cup competition. The tease (and it's really merely a tease) was broadcast during Red Bull's Battle Grounds competition this weekend, offering not much more detail -- although I'm going to assume his V-Trigger special is going to be awesome. I mean, he's the man that brought us the mid-air fireball. C'mon.

Want a beach-ready body along the stylings of Chun-Li or Daddy Ryu? Capcom is here to help. In curious exercise of branding, it's announced a selection of gym equipment (loosely) inspired by a few Street Fighter 5 challengers. You can pick from weighted gloves (Ryu or Ken 'flavors'), a training tube that has Guile's endorsement and an M. Bison inflatable punching bag, with targets for high middle and lower attacks. Naturally. There's also delightful yellow- and red-colored dumbbells for everyone's favorite hairy wrestler, Zangief, although a man of his size needed more than a 10kg bicep curl to get that swole.

When Street Fighter V launched last month, it was criticised by the press and fans alike for its lack of in-game content. The engine and mechanics were solid, but it lacked the story mode, tutorials and several online features present in Street Fighter IV. While not a complete fix, a free patch dropping on March 28th should add some of the worst omissions. A new Challenge Mode, for instance, will add "demonstration" tutorials aimed at beginner, intermediate and advanced players. These will culminate in "trials" designed to test your knowledge of basic and pro combos.

It's back! We could be talking about Street Fighter 5 or Better Call Saul and it still works. Somehow The Grammys tonight is being pushed back by those two debuts, while Hulu is already streaming the series premiere of 11.22.63. Of course, if you prefer Netflix, then just wait until Friday morning when it drops Judd Apatow's new series Love as well as Cooked. On Blu-ray we have Steve Jobs, and Xbox One owners can finally dive in to Rocket League, now featuring cars based on Halo and Gears of War. Look after the break to check out each day's highlights, including trailers and let us know what you think (or what we missed).

Capcom debuted a fully CG trailer for the upcoming Street Fighter 5 release and lo, it is glorious. Each of the game's 16 playable launch characters makes an appearance, M. Bison raises some havoc and Ryu gets super-duper angry. The game hits store shelves next Tuesday, February 16th but you can see the animated trailer after the break.

The fabulous life of a professional 'Street Fighter' player

Darryl Lewis stows his luggage in the plane's overhead bin and settles into his seat, ready for another takeoff, another trip for work. He's seated next to an older man who's flying with his family. Eventually, the man turns to Lewis and asks him a standard question from the handbook of airplane small talk: "What are you traveling for?" Lewis pauses. He's the professional Ultra Street Fighter 4 player known as "Snake Eyez," and he's on his way to a competition where he could win thousands of dollars for playing a video game better than anyone else in the room. Will this guy get it? Does he even know what video games are or how big the industry is? Has he heard of eSports? Will he laugh? Oh, well. There's only one way to find out.

Street Fighter IV was a textbook case of how to breathe new life into an aging franchise. Led by Capcom's enthusiastic and passionate Yoshinori Ono, the 2008 release was designed to be a spiritual successor to Street Fighter II, the classic '90s game that practically defined the genre. But Street Fighter IV was far more than just a retro retread: The game was updated with 3D models and a host of new moves, play styles and robust competitive options, including a comprehensive online battle system. It brought the Street Fighter series back into the public mind in a big way and also gave Capcom a perfect title that let the company participate in the growing eSports world.

Street Fighter V will launch in just a few weeks, but Capcom's already sharing details about the game's long-term content strategy to keep players hooked. Perhaps the most notable announcement the studio made was that, for the first time, a Street Fighter game will have a proper story mode. Series producer Yoshinori Ono (whom we talked with extensively; you can read the entire interview here) says that the new single-player campaign will be released in June as free downloadable content for anyone who buys Street Fighter V.

At Sony's Paris Games Week on Tuesday, Yoshinori Ono, the mastermind behind Street Fighter 5, made a series of stunning revelations. First, he revealed that Dhalsim, everybody's favorite ass-kicking yogi, would be among the 16 playable characters when the game launches. Second, the game will hit North American and European store shelves on February 16th, 2016. Finally, and most excitingly, Ono-san announced that six additional characters would be available within the first year of gameplay. What's more, they'll be unlockable -- for free -- using the in-game "fight money" currency. No DLCs here, folks; you're going to have to earn these characters the old fashioned way: by beating the snot out of your opponent.

For most of the Street Fighter series' history, you've had to pay for significant new content. Want to get those sweet new characters? Buy the Super Ultra EX Plus Alpha Turbo Championship edition. You won't have to go through that rigamarole with Street Fighter V, though. Capcom is promising that any post-launch SFV material will be earnable for free, in-game -- accrue enough "Fight Money" and that brawler will be yours. You can still use real cash if you want more content without putting in additional play time, but you're no longer forced to splurge.

  • New trailer reveals 'Street Fighter V' is headed to PlayStation 4 and PC

Thanks to a prematurely posted trailer, we now know that Capcom's Street Fighter V is heading to PlayStation 4 and PC exclusively. The video (which has been pulled) is more of the teaser sort, so it doesn't delve into whether is this is a timed exclusive or a permanent one, and it fails to mention a projected release date. Bummer. The current effort, Ultra Street Fighter IV, continued the tournament with a handful of new characters when it debuted back in August for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC, so this is certainly something for fans of the franchise to look forward to. While details are scarce at the moment, we'll likely hear more about Street Fighter V during this weekend's PlayStation Experience in Las Vegas.
