How do you stand out in a sea of EV startups? By leaping on every tech buzzword possible, apparently. Human Horizons has introduced the HiPhi 1, a luxury electric SUV that could make even the Model X seem modest. It's reportedly the first production car with a 5G link to connected cars and cities, for a start. While it'll work with LTE, it might just have a next-gen connection before your phone does.

The Gladiator is essentially a Jeep Wrangler with a bed strapped onto the back. During my tests, I found it to be capable on both dirt and asphalt. But it's not for everyone.

The Bentley Bentayga Hybrid is a stately but uninspiring ride

One could fairly assume that riding in an SUV as large, expensive and, well, as orange as the 2019 Bentley Bentayga would turn a few heads. I certainly know I did. But as I found out during a test drive through Silicon Valley last Thursday, this full size SUV hybrid makes for a surprisingly sedate ride.

Both the gas and electrified Hyundai Kona are great vehicles. But maybe it's just a tad too big for you? If that's the case, the automaker just unveiled the Hyundai Venue. An entry-level SUV with an odd name.

If you're in the US and mulling a new car purchase, there's a pretty strong chance you're considering an SUV. Fair enough: Americans are pretty much over sedans at this point. In any case, Toyota has a refreshed version of its popular Highlander that might be right up your alley, but after a few moments ogling it at the New York Auto Show, one thing is clear: it's not happy to see you.

The Lincoln Navigator is unapologetically huge. But large, luxury SUVs don't have the sales numbers of the small crossover market. So it's no surprise that the automaker is tossing its luxury hat into that profitable ring with the new Corsair.

Volkswagen's growing electric car lineup will include something for those who like the reassurance of a full-size SUV. The automaker has unveiled an ID Roomzz concept that previews a three-row SUV headed for production in 2021. It's stylistically similar to the smaller Crozz and will muster a comparable 301HP through its dual motors, but the added bulk cuts its range to 280 miles on the WLTP testing cycle and gives it a still-respectable 0-62MPH time of 6.6 seconds. In the concept, though, the interior is everything -- it's designed with self-driving tech in mind.

When Ford announced that it's investing $850 million to build EVs in Michigan, it proved that it's ready to spend big money to make its electric dreams come true. That's a sentiment it has echoed at the "Go Electric" experience in Amsterdam, Netherlands, where it has revealed 16 hybrid and all-electric models for Europe. One of the fully electric vehicles announced at the event is a Mustang-inspired performance SUV that'll arrive in 2020.

The Range Rover line of vehicles commands a premium price. The British automaker is known for luxurious SUVs that are able to navigate the toughest terrain. That well-earned reputation includes all its vehicles -- even the entry-level Evoque, which has seen a slight design refresh and has received all the latest tech. The most intriguing is the new ClearSight Ground View that helps keep drivers from scraping the bottom of the Evoque while off-road.

Tesla isn't the only one unveiling a semi-affordable electric SUV in March. Fisker is signaling a shift toward more reasonably-priced EVs by unveiling a sub-$40,000 SUV that might claim a few advantages over its superiors. The automaker is aiming for a 300-mile range as standard through an 80kWh-plus battery (the Model Y will start at 230 miles), radar where the grill would be, and an "extended open-air atmosphere" available with a button press. You might not be in a rush to spend extra, then, although dual motors and all-wheel drive will be optional.

Subaru has unveiled the hybrid Viziv Adrenaline, a rough-and-tumble concept car that could be a preview of its next Crosstrek. It's a smallish SUV with protective plastic cladding at the corners and styling that's a bit more outlandish than its past concepts. It's mostly a styling exercise meant to show us what it might do next, and could presage future EV or plug-in hybrid crossovers.

Other details about the investment aren't being disclosed, but previous shareholders are involved and Rivian is remaining an independent company. Rumors suggested this week Amazon and GM would both invest, but it's not clear if the latter took part in this round. Nor did Rivian disclose how much of the company Amazon now owns.

Inexpensive entry-level vehicles are typically drab affairs. Beige boxes with the minimum options and styling that can be described as sadness on four wheels. The Nissan Kicks (yeah, with an S) is different. It's fun, quirky and has just enough tech to keep smartphone-addicted new car buyers happy.

When Infiniti announced that the QX50's turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine would have variable compression, my first two thoughts were "wow that's incredible" and "I can't wait to see how this works in a hybrid." The QX50 is not a hybrid, but what the automaker has accomplished is amazing. But it still needs a little fine-tuning if you're expecting a huge increase in fuel economy.
