As great as waterproof apparel is to keep you protected from bad weather, most jackets, pants and other gear tend to be too bulky or uncomfortable. That's a problem The North Face is well aware of, and it has come up with a new material that it believes will fix this: Futurelight, which the company is calling "the most advanced breathable waterproof outerwear technology." According to The North Face, Futurelight is its most comfortable waterproof gear yet, thanks to a design that lets air move through fabric more easily and provide "more venting than ever before.'

Keeping your ears open to the environment is key when riding a bike or otherwise needing to stay aware of your surroundings, but music is life right? The AfterShokz Trekz Titanium and Air series have been filling that need quite well for a while, but the company has broken away into new avenues for this year's models, with all the requisite z's still in place. Today the company has announced the AfterShokz Xtrainerz MP3 headset, along with its sister company OptiShokz's Revvez bone conduction audio sunglasses. The Xtrainerz should hit the market in Q2 2019 with a price of $149.95. Revvez are heading to Indiegogo on February 19th, 2019 for the crowdfunding treatment with an early bird price of $99 (MSRP $179). I managed to get my hands on some pre-production versions of both here at CES and overall, they seem worth a look, slotting nicely into some new categories.

Not content just to have the fastest UHS-II memory cards on the market, Sony wants to have the fastest and strongest. It just unveiled the SF-G series Tough UHS-II SD cards that can handle as much pain as you care to inflict. They're 18 times stronger than standard SD cards, and "use the world's first monolithic structure with a completely sealed one-piece molding," Sony said. As such, they're bend-proof, drop-proof to five meters, waterproof and dust-proof.

Panasonic has unveiled one of the first, if not the first ruggedized compact cameras with a built-in electronic viewfinder (EVF), the Lumix FT7 (the TS7 outside of North America). It packs a fairly high-resolution 20.4-megapixel back-side illuminated CMOS sensor and a reasonably fast and long f/3.3-5.9, 28-128mm equivalent (4.6X) lens. Most importantly for action fans, it can take a fall from 6.6 feet and is waterproof down to 102 feet.

Sony is so on top of its camera game right now that it is ready to try crazy products to attack new markets. Take the new RX0, a $700 camera that is aimed at the virtual-reality and remote camera shooting markets. It's equipped with a 1-inch, 15.3-megapixel Exmor RS CMOS sensor and a fixed Zeiss 24mm F4 wide-angle lens, giving it the same kind of high image quality you'd see with a new RX100 Mark V, for instance. It can also shoot 4K video, full HD at 240 fps and 16 fps RAW still images.

Kobo's latest waterproof e-reader is sized for poolside reading

Kobo's Aura One e-reader was potentially the dream device for anyone who likes to read in the bath or at the beach, but it had some catches. Its big 7.8-inch screen didn't make it the most portable device around, and that $229 price could be off-putting if you just wanted to read a novel now and then. Enter the just-introduced Aura H2O -- the new e-reader is still as waterproof as the One, and shares the same smart lighting that reduces blue light at night (in theory, to help you sleep). Its 6.8-inch touchscreen is decidedly easier to hold during longer siestas, while the $180 price (£150 in the UK) might simplify your purchasing decision.

Unlike Nikon and Panasonic, Fujifilm isn't making any major announcements at this year's CES. That said, the company is introducing a camera here in Las Vegas: the FinePix XP120, the latest member of its rugged point-and-shoot series. Naturally, the main highlights here are that it's waterproof (up to 65 feet) and shockproof to 5.8 feet, as well as dustproof and freezeproof. In addition, the XP120 sports a decent 16.4-megapixel CMOS sensor, 3-inch LCD and 1080p recording at 60fps. These specs won't blow anyone's mind, but the $230 camera could appeal to at least a few outdoor buffs when it launches in February.

If you're looking to improve the quality of your catch, or just terrorize the local fish, you should check out AguaDrone. As the name implies, it's a drone that's been specifically designed to operate on water for those fishy and outdoorsy types in your friend circle. As well as being fully waterproof, the device can land on and take off from bodies of both fresh and salt water. But AguaDrone's real strength is that it can carries a series of swappable pods that'll enable you to hunt down, film and catch those prized fish who aren't so easy to find.

Jabra's Sport Pulse and Sport Coach wireless headphones have been available for some time now, but the company has new versions of both models with some added features. Let's start with the Sport Pulse Special Edition, shall we? The heart-rate tracking in-ear headphones debuted in 2014, but now they gain automatic and continuous VO2 Max level monitoring thanks to a hand from the Jabra Sport Life app. If that term is unfamiliar, VO2 Max levels are a measure of aerobic fitness, or to put it another way, how efficiently your body uses oxygen. The new version of the Sport Pulse also offers coaching based on your heart rate and fitness level during exercise sessions.
