Mobile streaming service Quibi has locked down a number of intriguing projects ahead of its launch next year, including a revival of MTV's Punk'd and a semi-fictionalized account of the story behind Snap. Steven Spielberg is working on a Quibi show too -- he's writing a horror series you'll only be able to watch after the sun goes down.

Steven Spielberg is no fan of streaming services winning Oscars when they only have tiny presences in theaters, but is he really campaigning to change the rules? Not necessarily. Movie industry veteran Jeffrey Katzenberg told Hollywood Reporter in a chat that Spielberg "absolutely did not" say he was pushing for longer theatrical release requirements or otherwise trying to prevent services like Netflix from qualifying for awards. Katzenberg claimed instead that IndieWire "heard a rumor" and, when it received a statement from Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment, "twisted it around."

It won't surprise you to hear that Steven Spielberg doesn't think streaming movies should win Oscars, but now he appears to be backing up those words with deeds. A spokesperson for Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment has indicated to IndieWire that the director will rally support for rules restricting Oscars for streaming movies when the subject comes up at the Academy's Board of Governors meeting in April. Spielberg "feels strongly" about the issue and will be "happy" if others take his side, the spokesperson said.

It's happening. The Halo television show that Microsoft and Steven Spielberg have been talking about for five years is actually heading into production in early 2019. The show's working title is simply Halo and details about the plot are scarce, though it'll feature the franchise's classic storyline about a futuristic war between the human race and enemy aliens known as the Covenant. Showtime has ordered a 10-episode season of Halo, and episodes are set to be one hour long.

In ‘Ready Player One,’ the real world doesn't matter

When Steven Spielberg introduced Ready Player One at SXSW this year, he made a surprising statement: "This is not a film that we've made, this is -- I promise you -- a movie." And really, there's no better way to put it. It's a pop-culture-driven, nostalgia-inducing blockbuster that works best as a ride, but it falls apart the moment you think critically about it. It's not something that'll be taking any deep stances on VR, and it certainly doesn't have time for much social commentary (aside from some heavy-handed moralizing at the end).

Amazon has given Steven Spielberg the go-ahead to create a four-hour original miniseries based on the life of Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés. Spielberg has tapped Steven Zaillian (Schindler's List) to write the series for TV based on the screenplay written decades ago by the late Dalton Trumbo (Roman Holiday). The actor playing Cortés? None other than Spanish actor Javier Bardem, perhaps most lauded for his portrayal of a psychopathic hitman in No Country for Old Men.

Apple's original TV programming has been lackluster so far, to say the least. Planet of the Apps? Don't bother. Carpool Karaoke? Not much better. But the company isn't giving up and, according to The New York Times, has a major expansion in the works. Since October, Apple's top brass has bought 12 projects — nine of which have been green-lit for a full series — with a budget that will soon exceed $1 billion. The new slate of shows will reportedly launch somewhere between March and summer 2019, which is aggressive considering that most premium shows take a year to shoot.

It's that time of year again: that is, time to promise that Steven Spielberg's Halo TV series isn't dead. In an interview with TV Guide, Showtime CEO David Nevins promised that the live-action, gaming inspired show is "still in very active development." He didn't provide more details, but did note that he had seen scripts and that the network was "encouraged by what we've seen so far." He was confident it would not only please Halo fans, but Showtime's overall drama audience.

The initial trailer for Steven Spielberg's adaptation of Ready Player One focused on the virtual world of OASIS, and for understandable reasons: it's a visual showcase for a crucial part of the story. However, Warner Bros. wants to remind you that reality plays an important part as well. It just posted a new trailer that dives deeper into the real-world story, even as it makes a few extra nods to video game nostalgia.

How Netflix keeps ‘Stranger Things’ lo-fi in a high-tech world

Netflix is still surprised that Stranger Things, a science-fiction series starring five young kids, became a worldwide sensation immediately after it was released. Unlike some of its biggest hits, like House of Cards (which is based on a British series), Stranger Things was an unknown property when it premiered in July of 2016. But it quickly captivated audiences, thanks to its '80s nostalgia and the perfectly executed homages to Hollywood classics from the likes of Stephen King and Steven Spielberg.

Looks like Apple found someone to spend some of that billion dollars it earmarked for original TV and movies on: Steven Spielberg. Each episode of the revived Amazing Stories anthology series will cost about $5 million, according to Wall Street Journal's sources, and Spielberg will serve as executive producer for the show. Bryan Fuller (American Gods, Hannibal) is set to write according to Deadline, and the show has apparently been on ice for a few years. It's a partnership between the filmmaker's Amblin Television company, NBCUniversal and the iPhone maker.

Jaws wasn't the last classic movie of legendary director Steven Spielberg's to be remastered; Close Encounters of the Third Kind will get some modern love too. And best of all the 4K digital remaster is coming to theaters, too. Come September 1st you can experience one of Spielberg's first movies about aliens the way it was intended: in a dark room full of both people and the smell of overpriced popcorn.

Remember the Halo live action TV show Microsoft announced way back in 2013? Unlike Spartans that never die, it sure felt like the project's been dead for quite a while. The tech titan told AR12Gaming in an interview, though, that it has never stopped developing the series and that it's still working with Steven Spielberg and Showtime like it said years ago. 343 Industries, the Microsoft Studios subsidiary in charge of the franchise, said it's merely taking its time to ensure that the final product can meet fans' expectations.

Steven Spielberg's adaptation of Ready Player One will be making a big splash at San Diego's Comic-Con next week, but ahead of that Entertainment Weekly has given us our first look at the film. And, well, it looks a lot like the worn out, nostalgia-filled world described in Ernest Cline's popular novel. Front and center is Tye Sheridan as Wade Watts (or Parzival online) wearing a VR headset and haptic gloves. He uses that gear to tap into the OASIS, a global virtual reality network that serves as his one escape from his harsh life in the year 2044.

A bulk of Ready Player One takes place in a digital universe known as the OASIS, a utopian society filled with 3D models of people plugged into the MMO world. Steven Spielberg is directing the film adaptation of Ernest Cline's novel and he's looking to bulk out OASIS with 3D avatars from digital artists around the globe. Anyone with the right skills and determination can submit a 3D avatar via Talenthouse, and Spielberg and co. will choose at least five winners to place in the movie.

The notion of paying $50 to watch new-in-theaters movies at home may sound wild, but it apparently has the support of the biggest directors and producers in the business. Variety sources claim that the already hyped Screening Room service has the financial support of JJ Abrams, Ron Howard, Peter Jackson and Steven Spielberg, among other Hollywood luminaries. Only some of them are directly investing money, according to the tipsters, but all of them are shareholders.
