Add CBS All Access to the ranks of streaming services delivering appropriately eerie shows for Halloween. It used a New York Comic-Con panel to premiere the trailer for Tell Me A Story, an original series mashing up three fairy tales ("Three Little Pigs," "Little Red Riding Hood" and "Hansel and Gretel") in modern New York City. As you might imagine, these new narratives aren't nearly as child-friendly as the originals -- the three 'pigs' are bank robbers whose partnership falls apart, while Hansel gets into trouble with shady characters that endanger both him and his sister.

CBS just cast one of the most important roles in Star Trek: Discovery's future. The network has chosen Ethan Peck to play the iconic Spock in its streaming sci-fi series. According to the broadcaster, the In Time actor "effortlessly" reflected Spock's half-Vulcan mix of cool logic and bubbling emotions. It's not certain exactly when he'll show up, although there's a good chance he'll appear sometime in season two given that he both serves under the Enterprise's Christopher Pike and is the foster brother to "Michael Burnham."

CBS wants to remind you that its All Access streaming service isn't just about Star Trek, and it's doing that in grand fashion. The network has posted the first trailer for One Dollar, a thriller series that underscores the dangers of money. It features singer Sturgill Simpson as a former steel mill worker swept up in class and culture wars that ignite after a strange multiple murder. The hook, as the name implies, is a dollar bill -- its path through a declining company town provides different perspectives from people desperate for and corrupted by cash.

Star Trek: Discovery was successful enough to be renewed for a second season, but it was plagued with production problems that eventually led to the departure of showrunner Brian Fuller. If you were hoping that things would calm down for season two, there's more bad news: CBS just replaced Fuller's replacements, Gretchen Berg and Aaron Harberts. Star Trek: Discovery has been framed as a prequel to the original TV series, but there's been at least one conspicuous omission in that story: Christopher Pike, the captain of the USS Enterprise before James Kirk. He won't be missing for much longer, though. CBS has picked veteran actor Anson Mount to play Pike in the second season of the streaming series. Mount is best-known as Cullen from Hell on Wheels, but he has also had roles in shows and movies ranging from Marvel's Inhumans (Black Bolt) to Non-Stop.

‘Star Trek Discovery’ failed to do what good sci-fi does

    by
    Daniel Cooper

    02.13.2018

This article contains mild spoilers for the first season of 'Star Trek Discovery'. At its best, science fiction does more than just entertain, or ensure its cliffhanger is strong enough that you come back next week. The cool spaceships and robots are just the framework through which we explore the anxieties and morals of our society at large. And we're at such a febrile point in history that we need sci-fi to ground us in what's coming in the not-too-distant future. I've been preaching patience for a while now, but I don't think that I can defend Star Trek Discovery any further. The conclusion of its debut season has shown that, for all the promise of its raw material, it's been a big disappointment. The show lacked soul, and a theme, to the point where it has devoted its running time to celebrating its own coolness rather than exploring any sort of idea.
