Streaming shows dominate SAG Awards TV nominations

Streaming shows stand a much better chance of winning SAG Awards in 2019 than they did this year -- in fact, they're guaranteed at least one. The Screen Actors Guild has announced its nominees for the 25th annual awards, and streaming productions are thriving in every series-focused (that is, TV-focused) category. Most of those categories have two or more streaming shows in the running, and the "Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series" category has nothing but online shows. Voters will have to choose between GLOW, Grace and Frankie and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, with Grace and Maisel receiving two nominations each for that award.

Amazon renews 'Jack Ryan' months before it premieres

Amazon is confident that Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan will be a success -- so confident, in fact, that it's not waiting for initial viewings to declare it a hit. The company has already renewed Jack Ryan for a second season despite a months-long wait for Prime Video show's August 31st premiere. If you ask Amazon, it's a combination of its reaction to watching the show (generally a good idea) with early hints of customer interest. Reportedly, there was a 400 percent jump in watchlist additions for Jack Ryan following Amazon's Super Bowl ad campaign.

Want to see how well Tom Clancy's fictional world of spies, soldiers and terrorists translates to streaming services? You now have a date to mark on your calendar, although it'll be a while. Amazon has announced that Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan will premiere on August 31st, and it's already offering its Super Bowl trailer to show what the fuss is about. As mentioned back in 2016, the series depicts an untested Jack Ryan (played by The Office's John Krasinski) as he takes his first CIA field assignment and discovers a "new breed" of global terrorism -- it wouldn't be a Tom Clancy story if it were just a routine op, would it?

If you don't have a Prime subscription but want to check out some of Amazon's original series, you're in luck. The company has made ten pilot episodes from some of its best dramas, comedies, and kids' series free to watch on YouTube and Facebook for the first time ever. The lineup includes Amazon's most-streamed show, The Man in the High Castle, as well as Mozart in the Jungle and Transparent, both of which have won multiple Golden Globes.

Tom Clancy's famous fictional CIA agent Jack Ryan is back in action after 2013's critical and commercial disappointment Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit. Amazon has greenlit a 10-episode series, exclusive to Prime Video, that will star John Krasinski, of The Office fame, as the titular hero. Plot details are scarce, though it seems the series will be an origins story, with Ryan being an up-and-coming CIA analyst fighting terrorist groups.

  • All four Jack Ryan movies will go Blu on July 29th

There are some times in our life when being wrong is awesome, and when we told you last week that only two of the Jack Ryan movies would be available on Blu, it was one of those times. Usually the first movie in a franchise is the best, and that is true in this case with The Hunt for Red October, which will be available in HD along with Clear and Present Danger at the end of July. We are however concerned that no details have been announced yet, as this title has seen its fair share of issues and we'd feel much better if Paramount gave us reason to believe all the issues were ironed out.

  • Jack Ryan to finally go Blu in July

Jack Ryan fans have been teased by Paramount for almost a year now -- first The Jack Ryan Collection was announced for both formats, then only for HD DVD. When it was finally released it was a disaster and was recalled. Now here we are almost a year later and according to DVD Town, only two of the four movies will be available on Blu-ray on July 29th. To make things worse, the best movie in the series, The Hunt for Red October is MIA and there's no mention of when we may see it. Don't get us wrong, we like all four movies, and we're glad we'll get to see Patriot Games and Sum of all Fears in HD, but exactly how long does it take to remaster four movies in HD and press a few Blu-ray Discs?

  • Paramount delays, recalls Jack Ryan HD DVD set

Paramount has reacted quickly, delaying and recalling its not-so-special Jack Ryan Special Collectors Edition HD DVD boxed set that shipped without any of the special features listed on the box. While some may appreciate a minimalist style, presenting only the movies without the interruption of minor elements like, a menu, this was taking it a bit far. No word yet if the discs will be reissued with the missing features, or if those boxes will be returning with certain lines conveniently blanked out.

Feel free to correct us if we're wrong, but special edition DVD/HD DVDs should have extra content and therefore worthy of the moniker, right? Well, apparently someone at Paramount didn't agree, as the new Jack Ryan collector set doesn't include any of the bonus features listed on the box. No audio commentary, no featurettes, nothing extra at all is included in the set besides the movies. In fact, viewers are reporting that when the discs are popped in, they just start playing without displaying a menu at all. No word from Paramount just yet, but apparently, when you buy this box set, the only thing owners are going to enjoy is the movies themselves.

Everyone has at least one favorite catalog title that they just can't wait to enjoy all over again on their preferred HD home disc format; we don't know about anyone else, but Jack Ryan is the main character in a one of ours. If you agree, you'll be just as excited to hear that DVD Town is reporting that on September 25th, Paramount will be releasing "The Jack Ryan Special Edition Collection" on both HD DVD and Blu-ray. We know what you're thinking, "just the box set, what about individually?". Yeah, we're with you on that one, as much as we love The Hunt for Red October, we're not sure it's worth paying for Clear and Present Danger, Patriot Games and The Sum of All Fears; just for the one title.[Via Movieweb.com]
