'Untitled Goose Game' honks its way to a million sales
Untitled Goose Game hasn't just melted the hearts of mischievous gamers -- apparently, it's also a commercial success. Panic's Cabel Sasser has revealed that House House's chaos-creating title has racked up 1 million sales since its debut on September 20th. He didn't break down sales by platform, although we wouldn't be surprised if the PC version was the frontrunner. The PS4 and Xbox One releases no doubt helped, mind you. And remember, the PC edition is currently an Epic Games Store exclusive -- we'd expect another boost once it reaches Steam in late 2020.
Our favorite games of 2019
The end of 2019 is nigh, which means it's time for us to take stock of this year's crop of games. And it's been quite a year -- not quite the heights of 2017, to be sure, but still more than we here at Engadget can reasonably play between all the gadgets we review and events we attend. So rather than declare a list of winners, we'll tell you about the titles that captured our hearts and minds this year, the games of 2019 that made our days just a little better and will stick in our memories as we round the corner into the next decade and beyond.
'Death Stranding' and 'Control' lead Game Awards nominees
The Game Awards takes place in less than a month and voting is now open after Geoff Keighley announced the nominees. Hideo Kojima's sprawling epic Death Stranding leads the pack with nine nominations, including game of the year, game direction, score/music, narrative and performance for both Norman Reedus and Mads Mikkelsen.
Get $24 off the Nintendo Switch on Amazon
If you've been waiting to purchase a Nintendo Switch, or want to update your existing unit, Amazon has a decent deal on the console. If you take advantage of an onsite coupon, you can get $24 off the console, making it $275, instead of $299. Note that the discount is applied on checkout, and that the model Amazon is selling is the updated one that features a higher capacity battery that significantly improves battery life. In The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, for instance, the new variant can about five-and-a-half hours of playtime instead of three. In all, Nintendo has said the refreshed model can eke out up to nine hours of playtime in portable mode, depending on the game you play. $24 off the Switch is a modest amount, to be sure, but look at this way: with the cash you save you can buy the excellent Untilted Goose Game and still have money for a coffee. It's also worth pointing out the Switch rarely goes on sale.
What we played in October: 'Untitled Goose Game' and 'What the Golf?'
Welcome back to Engadget's Gaming IRL, a monthly segment where we run down what our editors are playing. This time, it's all about the goose. You know which one. We also dove into one of Apple Arcade's most addictive titles, What the Golf, as well as Sayonara Wild Hearts. And of course, we couldn't help but check out the latest Apex Legends season. We'd also love to know what you've been playing, shout out in the comments below!
After Math: When your goose cooks
While many of us were channeling our inner jerks through a troublemaking goose avatar, companies throughout the tech industry were conducting dastardly shenanigans of their own. Here are a few of the week's highlights.
The best way to play ‘Untitled Goose Game’ is to dress like a goose
For Twitch streamer Dylan "Rudeism" Beck simply playing a menacing goose in Untitled Goose Game wasn't enough. He wanted to become the goose. In a livestream yesterday, Rudeism put on a homemade goose suit and played the game in a whole new way.
‘Untitled Goose Game’ arrives today on Mac, PC and Switch
Geese are jerks, and now you can be one too. Untitled Goose Game is available today on Mac, Windows and Switch. The odd ball game puts you in the role of a goose that's determined to annoy residents of a village. You'll prank them, steal items and honk, a lot. As the description puts it, "it's a lovely morning in the village and you are a horrible goose."
'Untitled Goose Game' will unleash avian chaos on September 20th
You won't have to wait much longer to wreak feathered havoc in Untitled Goose Game. House House has revealed that its avian "slaplstick-stealth-sandbox" title will be available on Macs and Windows PCs (both via the Epic Games Store) as well as the Switch on September 20th for $20, or $15 if you buy it on launch. Whichever version you play, there's one common goal: be a loveable jerk.
