You can now order Postmates at Yankee Stadium
The days of gnawing on rubbery hot dogs or peanuts during a baseball game are long over. From Fenway Park to Camden Yards, most MLB stadiums are packed with a wide range of food options. But for the Yankees fan with a craving for something different, Postmates today has announced an exclusive partnership with Yankee Stadium. The food delivery app already has a similar partnership in place with the Dodger Stadium.
Amazon's next big step in sports: buying into the Yankees Network
As Disney completes its acquisition of Fox there's more than just the Marvel universe at stake. One condition of the purchase is that it will sell off Fox's portfolio of regional sports networks, and as rumors late last year suggested, one interested party is Amazon. Reports from the New York Times and other outlets claim that while the Yankees are completing a deal to become the majority owner of the Yankees Entertainment Sports Network (YES), Amazon and Sinclair Broadcasting are among the groups chipping in to pay part of Fox's $3.4 billion asking price for the 80 percent the Yankees didn't already own. YES Network broadcasts games for the Yankees, Nets and the NYCFC MLS team. According to the reports, Amazon's stake in the business is enough for it to have the right to stream games in their local territories. That may not shift the live sports balance of power nationwide, but as Bloomberg points out a note from one analyst saying this could be a step toward unbundling regional sports networks from cable TV packages.

As eSports has grown into the arena-filling behemoth it is today, traditional sports has been clamouring for a stake. Talent has been snapped up, tournaments established, and multi-million dollar investments made. The trend looks set to continue with news that two of the NBA's biggest rivals are jumping on the competitive gaming bandwagon. ESPN is reporting that the Cleveland Cavaliers have nabbed a spot in the North American League of Legends Championship Series (LCS).
Red Sox reportedly cheated with a Fitbit, not an Apple Watch
Reports that the Boston Red Sox cheated in games with an Apple Watch may have been slightly off the mark. A source speaking to Boston Globe baseball writer Nick Cafardo claims that the team used a Fitbit device, not Apple's smartwatch. It's not certain which model would have been used, but the Blaze seems like a prime candidate given its smartwatch-like design. You don't need a high-priced smartwatch to get text messages, after all.
Red Sox reportedly used Apple Watch to steal Yankees' signals
The Cardinals aren't the only Major League Baseball team accused of using technological cheats. According to the New York Times, the league has determined that the Boston Red Sox cheated in numerous games against the New York Yankees (who filed a complaint) and other teams by using the Apple Watch to relay the hand signals that catchers and pitchers use to communicate intended pitches. Investigators learned that Red Sox trainers received signals from video replay staff and used the smartwatch to quietly relay that info to the team.
Yankee Stadium to fans: Scan your thumb and skip the line
Welcome to the future, sports fans – you can use your smartphone to track trades, Twitter can tell you who's on the DL, and now your fingerprints can get you into the ballpark faster. Beginning August 7th, Yankee Stadium will roll out the Clear biometric security service to visitors, which allows fans to use a "Fast Access" line by registering their fingerprints and driver's licenses.
Early DirecTV 3D reviews take the good with plenty of the bad
Now that n3D is live on DirecTV, there's an opportunity to see whether or not the 3D revolution is actually ready for takeoff. Judging by early impressions from CNET's David Katzmeier and HDGuru Gary Merson, like the early days of HD and Blu-ray before it, quality 3D experiences are unfortunately mixed in with mediocre to awful ones. CNET had mixed impressions of the Guitar Sessions segments featured on n3D, while the effect seemed forced at times, though enjoyable at others. Unfortunately both reviewers cited African Adventure: Safari in the Okavango for its terrible presentation, with Merson going so far as to request it be taken off the air until the 3D issues are corrected. It wasn't all bad, as he gave Encounter in the Third Dimension and S.O.S. Planet much higher ratings, along with an overall favorable impression of this past weekend's Mariners/Yankees broadcast despite a few camera tracking issues. YES, FSN sign up additional providers for Yankees/Mariners 3D broadcast
Since we last checked in, the YES Network has expanded the networks with the first 3D MLB broadcasts as the Yankees play the Mariners this weekend. Verizon had previously mentioned it would have 3D baseball on FiOS, while Multichannel News says Blue Ridge Communications, Cablevision, Comcast, Cox, Service Electric Broadband Cable and Time Warner Cable will all make the games available on July 10 and 11. Besides these special events, FiOS says it's continuing to prepare a full 3D offering for the winter holiday shopping season, when it figure more customers may find new 3D-capable HDTVs and glasses under the tree, but for now subscribers can catch the game on channel 575. Cox lists channel 784 in its press release, and encourages interested fans to stop by the Manchester or Meriden Best Buy stores to check out the games. Left coasters aren't left out either, besides DirecTV, they can catch 3D games on FSN NW on Comcast and Time Warner Cable, while the network is apparently still discussing expanding to other operators.
Minor league baseball team offers free tickets to iPad owners
The New York Yankees may not want anyone to take their iPads out to the ball game, but one minor league team is giving iPad-toting fans free tickets. Every Monday night is "iPad Monday" for the Hudson Valley Renegades. If you were turned away from the gate by those snobby Yankees who apparently don't want their shiny new $1.5 billion stadium tarnished by digital toys, just hop in the car for a hour-long drive to Dutchess Stadium in Wappingers Falls, NY. There you'll be greeted with open arms and a free general admission ticket (while supplies last) to the game. The Renegades are a short-season Class A ball club, and they're definitely embracing the digital age. Not only will you and your iPad find a welcoming smile at "The Dutch," but the team is also going to help you set up or update the Twitter, Facebook, and Foursquare accounts on your iPad. That way, you'll be able to tell your other cyber-buddies about the nice free ticket you're enjoying while they're sucking down $10 beers at Yankee Stadium. [via Mashable]
DirecTV quickly signs up the first baseball 3D broadcast
After being left out of the Masters 3D presentation, DirecTV isn't missing out on this one. It's teaming up with FSN Northwest and YES Network to bring home two games between the New York Yankees and Seattle Mariners on July 10 and 11, although they will only be viewable by customers in the normal home footprint of both sports networks. Unfortunately it looks like the flyover states will miss out on the games, but those with a 3DTV and DirecTV will already have enjoyed plenty of World Cup action, and can look forward to the All-Star Game on July 13. Multichannel News indicates YES Network COO Ray Hopkins said other networks will have the "opportunity" to cut deals regarding the games, so if you're on another broadcaster but live in the home areas there's a possibility you will see them as well. Expect six to eight 3D camera angles, including a few from lower than usual positioning, to bring the game home. Whether it's an exclusive or not for a couple of regular season games probably isn't that big of a deal, but it will be interesting to see which, if any, of the other broadcasters snap up ESPN 3D ahead of the World Cup next month.

During a shot up to a luxury box at tonight's Yankees vs. Red Sox matchup, LeBron was seen glancing in the direction of an iPad that was actually being shown off to someone else, but rather than drooling over Jobs' latest magic trick, he casually withdrew and returned to his conversation with Dre. After Game 1, MLB 09's World Series predictions look good
At first, we doubted MLB 09's simulation of the World Series between the NY Yankees and the Philadelphia ... Phillies (a bit redundant, no?). However, the Phillies' dominant performance in Game 1 of the series made us reconsider our position.According to the San Diego Studio-developed baseball game, the World Series will last all seven games this year, with Philadelphia ultimately the victor. So far, MLB has correctly predicted the victor of Game 1.This may be upsetting to New York fans, especially as the Yankees are the heavily favored team in this match-up. However, video game AI has had a pretty successful track record so far. Look at Madden, which has managed to correctly predict the winner of 6 out of the last 7 Super Bowl games. We'll find out soon enough if MLB has the same accuracy.
Baseball umps cite HDTV, SportsCenter for changing the way games are called
While we were just getting used to the football, hockey and basketball offseason, baseball umpires have piqued or interest with a statement that HDTV has changed the game. Now that viewers at home (& in the stands) have high res screens and feeds, not to mention DVRs to go frame by frame as many times it pleases them and constant replays on SportsCenter it's changed the way they call close plays on the base paths. Of course, we don't think that calling the game more accurately within the rules is a bad thing, but as this week's dustup involving Derek Jeter showed, not everyone has gotten the message, we're thinking a HD replay booth may be in order. Any longtime baseball fans noticed games getting called tighter over the last decade or so?
Yankee Stadium's HD scoreboard already having problems?
As if things weren't bad enough at the new Yankee Stadium, the latest high priced acquisition to experience issues seems to be the new HD scoreboard -- check out those odd equalizer-looking white bars New Stadium Insider spotted all over the screen during a game Thursday. We're not going to get into the Daktronics vs. Diamond Vision debate, but hopefully it's nothing a few triple A rehab starts can't fix.
Verizon's FiOS TV expansions: April 18, 2009
This week Verizon announced it was including the YES Network in its package nationally (sans-Yankees games) in addition to all the VOD from last week. Yankees new Diamond Vision HD scoreboard unveiled
Say hello to the Yankee's biggest and, in our opinion, best new acquisition. We've been all up and down the specs of the Mitsubishi built 101- by 59-foot LED display for the last year so we'll just sit back and let it wash over you, while we contemplate whether those luxury seats below block some of the bleacher seats, or the ant-sized players trotting around on the field below.
Yankee Stadium -- and its enormous HD screen -- opens to the fans Thursday
The New York Yankees annual team workout is April 2, and that's when the organization officially takes the wraps off its 101- by 59-foot HD Diamond Vision scoreboard. Mitsubishi's screen can show 5,925 sq ft of HD and give either one large 1080 image or up to four simultaneously. An 8mm dot pitch means we wouldn't put our noses against it, but from anywhere else in the ballpark the view should be perfect. Congratulations New York, instead of just Mets vs. Yankees beef, this year you'll be tied up in the Mitsubishi vs. Daktronics debate.
